On this episode of You Need This Tool I feature Eastwood's Media Tumbler. This thing works great and will for sure add to the attention to detail on future projects.
Welcome to The Fab Forums. My name is Kyle Voss and I produce Custom Motorsports Fabrication content of all forms for you. Carbon Fiber, TIG Welding, Metal Shaping, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Choppers, and everything in between. I work hard to bring you new content on a weekly basis.

I have built several Chevy trucks on this channel. The first was my 1964 C10 named Crown Spoyal and the most recent C10 truck project was the 1969 I currently have named the Black Pearl.
I am also finishing up a custom twin turbo Ford Mustang build I call the Gray Goose. It’s a 400 cubic inch Windsor style engine with twin 70mm turbos. I am hoping to make around the 1000 horse power mark to the tires on this particular build.
Last but not least is the one off custom hot rod build called the Bibbster. This is what I call a modern day hot rod. It’s made from an old Ford Mustang foxbody, but made to look like an old school open wheeled hot rod.
I also feature other fabricators and shops like Cutworm Specialties hand formed aluminum wide body kit for a BMW e46. Jeb Greenstone has also built a twin turbo, coyote powered model A style hot rod from scratch, and is currently building a Toyota TE72 wagon drift car powered by a 1UZ Lexus v8. Jeb’s custom fabrication skills are fun to watch and always make for good videos.

Great tool, I use it all of the time. Try using the metal wash with the green media, works good on greasy bolts.The hose on the tub is for draining out the metal wash when you are finished, they thought of everything. As always thanks for the Vid. I am going to do work son!

I have one of these. I was initially disappointed at how long it took to clean parts,,, and the noise too. I started to experiment with methods and so far have settled on the green plastic pyramids with a Cascade brand liquid dishwasher detergent & water solution. The liquid in the mix cuts the noise to near zero, and the parts get cleaner in about a 1/4 of the time it takes dry. I use it a lot now.

Water extends media life substantially.. but as they break down the coating needs to be promptly rinsed off or it dries and retumbling required.
The green is for cleaning, the corn is for finishing. Using the corn first is like using 2k grit sandpaper to get rid of rust.

I use one of these a lot for reloading ammunition. If you're going to use it a lot you ought to pick up a media separator. I dunno if eastwood has them or not, but any store that sells reloading equipment should carry one. It's just a nice little thing to spin out the media from your parts so you can easily find them all.

What works way better is a rotary tumbler with stainless pins, dawn, and lemishine. Took me years to discover it as a reloader but it makes casings come out almost like new even if they're tarnished

Adding a little bit of soapy water with the plastic pyramids helps out on some projects. I have the Harbor Freight one and the bowl broke, so I wanna get a few of the Eastwood replacement ones. Handy tool for those projects that are too detailed to buff up by hand.
I love eastwood, i have a store 15 minutes form me, I mod computers for a living but I do that in my fabrication shop I built, lots of automotive fabrication crosses over into PC modding, and eastwood is super handy to have close by. Ive got the smaller eastwood tumbler it does damn good.

Someone may have already said this....but, you only polish parts that are ready to polish. Use green pyramids then the corn crap
Hey when you do the corn cob media add a little nu finish liquid polish to it. I do this with brass and it really brings out the shine

I enjoyed seeing actual before and results, so well done.👍 My plan of attact when using it would be to build a small, insulated enclosure in the shop to house it, then plug it in before going to bed. Maybe you are Eastwood biased, maybe you do get perks from Eastwood, maybe Eastwood fattens up your pocket. I don't know and I don't care! You do a damn good job of showing off their products and demonstrating their capacity. I never did care for Eastwood, but after watching these videos I tell myself "Man, that might be something I will need for my garage" and I like that you add the link to the product page. Hit the bolt with a magnet to see if it's stainless steel? I use my vibrator for cleaning / polishing for reloading brass, just like Derick Clute says below. I have used mine for 17 years, and now use the car wax / polish in the Orange bottle, vs stuff made just for ammo brass! Love your videos!

When using the ceramic media (green pyramids) it works a lot better with water. If I ran items through my vibro-polisher for six hours it would wear them away 40 to 50 minuets is usually enough.I found that it is better to mix the shapes,I use gey 10mm balls and grey pyramids in my 2 cubic foot unit.

I run a hose in and have a hose to run the water out. It's a half inch hose with the tap just cracked open, so basically just a trickle running through you need to keep the media clean as it clogs up. it is just a load of small whet stones in reality. The machine is built to be used wet it has an inch and half nozzle for the water outlet.
The one we had in the machine shop at my last job almost looked like a soup when it was running. The corser stones defiantly need to prolong the life of them. Then swap out to a second drum from the shine finish. You can pick up spare drums that are compatible with the Eastwood one at your local harbor freight store.
good video, I really like how you had two of everything as your control, however your hardware was not that rusty, not being rude, but I went through the exact same testing with fender and grille nuts and bolts from my '54 Chevy truck, and this tumbler didn't do much of anything, ran it twice for 10 hours
I use mine to clean brass for reloading. Add your media, corn, BBs whatever you prefer and a bit of polishing paste. Good to go.

yo i had one for some wheel bolts and valve cover nuts worked great ... i put 2 spoon fulls off mothers in and some nufinish
basicly the parts are now done to be plated.. use them as is.. they rust after a week :P. but this video convinced me.. im buying one! rebuilding a engine and need some stuff to be recoated. but need ti to be with out sanding and stuff or wierd chemical etching with acids lol

Stainless will still rust... different grades rust at different rates.... ALL metals will oxidize... ALL metals.
The green pyramids leave a "grey sandblasted finish" and the dry-Shine/husk polishing medis leaves a better looking finish.
I don't even smoke pot anymore and damn if I didn't hear a bong " singing a tune" when you fired that hog up.... *shakes head* LOL
This is one of those machines, that you quickly realize that you need 3 of them, all set up with different media, ready to go. (or at least 3 different bowls)
Something you'll want to do it extend the life of the bowl, is to epoxy a piece of wheel barrel sized inner tube to the bottom. The other thing I did was to take a piece of thick acrylic, route out a groove for the lip, and use that as the lid. This accomplishes two things. First, allows you to crank down on the lid much tighter than the flimsy plastic will allow. And secondly, lets you see the progress.
This is identical to the Harbor Freight version. Which is cheaper when you use the 20% or 25% off coupons. But Eastwood is one of the places that sells extra bowls for $30. (the 5lb versions of this suck ass, just stay away)
I use Simple Green as my mixing solution with the green pyramids. When you use a solution, you don't have to let it run as long. Also, really look into all the different abrasive medias there are for this. As there really isn't a one media for all solution. For instance, you'll never want to vibrate aluminum parts in the same media that you ran steel through. Again, like I said... you'll quickly realize how beneficial it is to have many of these (or at least bowls) ready to go.
After two years of working my way through using these bowl tumblers, I just want to say ..... THUMBS UP TO YOUR ENTIRE POST!!
You should do the ceramic first and then switch to the polishing media.

I’ve had 2 18 lb vibratory tumblers from Eastwood, one had an electric motor failure after a couple of years, one still works. The green fiberglass pyramids absorb dirt slime grease on your parts then transfers the slime back on the parts and it’s difficult to get off. Really not worth the money IMO.
Adding some dish soap with the green pyramids helps out with greasy stuff.
You said the corn was for polishing so my thinking is to use the pyramids first to get most of rust off followed by corn grit to give a final polish.

I don't really know what I was expecting but looking forward to the results. Sand was a bit disappointing but the stones was more promising. Definitely looking to see more action from this. Looks like it makes a ruckus with the stone's. LOL
yeah the stones are made to be used with water as well so I plan to give that a shot....I would guess it would also tame the noise some

I think the green are obviously more of a coarse media to take the rust off. If you followed that up with the finer corn polish, i bet they would come out SHINEY!

Check out sporting good stores that have tumbling media for reloading, I use one for my brass and I find that walnut shells cleans better, while corn is better for polishing. you can get some that has polishing rouge embedded in it, which I hear works well for really nice polishing.

Keep up the good videos. I think is spend 5-6 hours cleaning special suspension bolts with media blaster and wire wheel before they could be plated. This would save me a lot of work.

Great video. Just a thought, im pretty sure you're supposed to run the part through the green first and clean them then the corn to polish them if you want them polished

i got one of these at a garage sale. And i'm trying to figure out its advantage over say a sandblaster. Where I can get that effect in 5 min, compared to the 12 hours. Maybe there is a creative use. Between sandblasting or using evaporust i'm not sure where this fits in.

Not great but good. Where these things really "shine" is on brass ammo casings for reloading.
The coating is zinc I do believe, my uncle's business does such a coating for GM etc.etc. etc.
Gold color on most fasteners is usually a zinc-chromate or zinc-phosphate conversion.
Yup, they do a lot of other colors as well (well at least my uncles business does, not sure about others)... I got a bunch of samples here on my computer desk of them (door pins etc.).
could you put some 30/60 glass media in it to remove chrome to cerakote or paint the part?

stainless steel isn't 100% rust proof depending on the grade it just stains less than carbon steel

Noob Advice - don't use liquid with the corn husk/dry-Shine/polishing media, just the early stages with green pyramids or other cutting abrasives.... guess how I learned that lesson?

I used to use a rock polisher for stuff. But couldn't you have used a scuff pad and done about the same thing in about 30 seconds?
yeah depending on what it is....some things have hard places to get by hand. plus who want to hand scuff a hundred bolts. I can let this machine do the work while work on other things
Man I really wonder if this would work well on PVC fittings as long as you used the right material!? Seems legit. We use PVC fittings and like everything else, especially even you're busy and mobile, they get dirty as hell rolling around the work truck bins. When we deep clean after the hot season we have 5 gallon buckets full of these new, but dirty fittings that we almost don't want to use in houses and buildinga. Lol

That emblem of yours would’ve been getting damaged from the other stronger parts. I would have rumbled the emblem by itself
Always rumble same metals(tensiles) together and don’t overload the tumbler with too many parts they will damage each other
You would have got totally different finishes running all those parts separately different parts in the same run become harsh media

both of those take your time....I would rather spending my time doing things that make me money in the shop and let the tumbler do the work for me
What I really can't understand is how can the motor of the Tumbler afford the long time working? What type of motor or wiring??

This is the same process that Snap On used to polish its tools before chrome plating. Granted the machines they use are 16-20 feet across but the results should be the same. Edit: snap on used a water bath with plastic media.

Not all stainless steel is non-magnetic.
Some stainless also rusts.

lol...yeah but that work require you to be doing it your self. I would much rather be spending my time doing something productive vs scrubbing parts. Beside chemical wont polish like this will.
Agree in some leve!, my time is also valuable! makes me crazy wait 12 hour! maybe we can combine two solutions chemical in order to melt most rust out of the part and then clean and polish with the tumbler, I wondering if you tested the tumbler with water in the media and polish paste!
When i was an apprentice I was questioned about why I was doing something a certain way. I told the boss it was because I was lazy. He told me it was a good idea and " a lazy person can often find the most efficient way of completing a task". I think thats relevant here.
