THANK YOU SO MUCH for watching this video and for being a cray nut who looks down at the bottom of the timestamps! You are a LEGEND!
I will not tolerate any Low Man's Lyric slander. That song is phenomenal.
Agreed, although the original demo version (Mine Eyes) is superior in my opinion and it's a shame they didn't record it that way.
Yes, great song!
Agreed!
Correct opinion.
Absolutely 💯
Load is the dusty western movie, Reload is the hollywood 90s movie. Glad you guys enjoyed them both. I love your stuff.
Id love to see a Western opening with Aint My Bitch 😛
That is a great analogy!
I love this!!
Load/Reload are one of the best sounding LPs ever made. I would kill for that sound!
I agree 100%! If i could make music that sounded like that I would be a millionaire!
I bought that album when came out , I really felt that Metallica was in a time where they needed something different or they not going to survive. I’m happy they did because they still going strong today because of the past.
In retrospect, that’s how I looked at it, but not at the time. Lol
I think it was Lars who said that if they hadn’t done Load/Reload, they wouldn’t have been able to do what they did afterward.
I rarely listen to those two albums, but it’s cool they did them. It was a bold move, because they could have easily kept doing the same thing over and over, but they would probably sink into obscurity, eventually.
@beatmet2355 Maybe you should listen to the album it has some good mood songs on it.
@@scorpionking4012 definitely. Devil’s Dance is probably my favorite on Reload and Bleeding Me on Load. I’m not wild about James’s vocals on these albums, but I think Bleeding Me is my favorite vocal performance of any of their songs.
@beatmet2355 I agrée, i love bleeding me , the S&M version is probably James best vocal performance ever!!
@@scorpionking4012 which S&M?
I adore the reactions! Wild things is one of my favorite songs in the album for its uniqueness. Glad you picked up on it!
The verse riff is from Jason, apparently. One of his few writing credits.
Ultimately I felt that this album had way more filler than Load did. But sonically it sounds clearer than it's predecessor. Load has a very warm feel to it, reload is definitely crisper.
I completely agree with you!
I honestly would say IMO that Load has the best Metallica Lyrics on one album to this day, So much more personal than anything else has.
James' vocals on Reload are adventurous, high, and often nasally and exaggerated. They were hard to stomach at first, but I grew to love them. It also took a few listens to warm up to the songs you didn't like. Better Than You's got that driving crunchy riff, Slither is full of attitude, and Prince Charming is just a bop, you seemed to overlook how catchy that song is. I love every track on the record.
I liked Slither more while editing the video, so with a few more listens they might all grow on me!
I like you described Prince Charming as about because it really is, super catchy and obscure
Full support in doing a reaction to "S&M". For a live album, it sounds amazing (also produced/mixed by Bob Rock), and imo it has the definitive versions of some songs (The Call of Ktulu, Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn, etc.). Plus No Leaf Clover and -Human, two pretty good songs
@JocaFus I agree. S&M is amazing and these guys should react. Definitive renditions like you said.
I think we have to, especially since I love symphonic metal so much!
What most dont know is that S&M did not sound as good live as the final product of the album. They went back into the studio and touched up this album. There is leaked audio online from the crowd. It sounds completely different.
@@NanoverseProductions thats not uncommon in the live release sphere. For me, that only makes me more excited to hear it!
@@PatrickMusilekevery single Frank Zappa "live" album is 90% studio overdubs and they sound phenomenal
I realized by watching the entire Load and Reload reactions with you fine gentleman that I listen to music for way way different reasons that you guys. Fixxxer is a masterpiece born from the flames of James’ deepest pain.
You guys are awesome.
Definitly! And I think it's great when people listen to music for the deeper meaning. People like you write meaningful music, while people like me make sure the mics are in the right place!
@@PatrickMusileklol it's hard to find that happy medium.
I personally love faithfuls vocals. They're haunting, and considering the song is about fame and how fleeting it is, i think it fits.
And the ENTIRE audience can sing along those parts live.
It fits in that sense but sucks anyway.
I love the Bad Seed appreciation, it’s really underrated imo
Great tune 🎉
It's very COC ish
one of my favorites from reload
@@ryantimmel6112 clash of clans?
Was waiting for this, hell yeah! Unforgiven II will always have a special place in my memory. I love how there are little references to the first one, like the hidden riff from pt. 1 toward the end and the "never be, never me" in the last choruses
I don’t think Iv ever been more excited for a UA-cam video lol
I thank Metallica for letting me discover these guys. They are fun, nerdy, they know their stuff and we have a fan on the side that speaks what we fans want to say on the spot!
Please keep in mind, Lulu is not a "Metallica record." It is a Lou Reed album, in which Lou hired Metallica to be Lou's backing band.
I cannot still comprehend how people still to this day, couldn't understand this. They wanted to play with Lou, be his band, because they have a connection with him otherside of music, as a human. Not everything is music in this life.
I never considered that POS a Metallica album. thats Reeds garbage.
Except Metallica wrote (or had a hand in writing) most of the music…It’s not like they were just hired hands to play everything Lou had come up with.
@@zachjohnson637 the riffs are good lou reed is fucking awful. its all lou's bullshit poety therefore its a lou reed album not a metallica album
Has anyone ever actually played it start to finish?
Some background on the recording of Reload, since it can be confusing. The music itself was all done around 95/96 with the recording of Load. However, during a break in touring a year later in 97 finishing touches were put on the songs as well as vocals being laid down. So that's why James sounds different vocal wise from Load to Reload. The vocals on Load were done in 95/96 while the vocals on Reload were done in 97. Hope that helps you guys! Kind of a Metallica nerd. lol. Also, the choking on Bad Seed was a nod to Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath which features Tony Iomi choking on marijuana smoke in the beginning.
You and remote Chris are great with discussing albums. Can’t wait to hear more!
ive been waiting for this im so happy
James: Ooooo!!!
I think the eye liner fits so well with this review hehe
Been waiting for this one! Only one I’m more excited for is Stanger
Oh God.
Did they do Death Magnetic yet?
@@Faris-me8le no
Hey from Scotland! Really love what you guys are doing. Totally different from the usual reaction videos that have been doing the rounds on UA-cam for the past number of years. As a self-confessed Metallica obsessive, it’s great to think about their music from a different perspective, thank you. Keep up the good work 🤘🏻 as for post-2000 bands, Trivium. Awesome band!
Trivium has been requested a few times, so it has been added to the list of possible bands to react to!
@@PatrickMusilek another good band to check out would be Volbeat, particularly their album ‘Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie’
@@philsmith2842 OHO! You sir are right! i LOVE Volbeat (I have all of their albums on CD) and Seal the Deal and Let's Boogie is my favorite! I love the title track, but I also really like Battleship Chains (gets stuck in my head whenever I listen to that album) and Marie Levau!
@@PatrickMusilek niiiiiice 🤘🏻 I love Goodbye Forever and You Will Know. I do agree with those tracks you named too, particularly Marie Laveau.
I found you guys simply because I’m a diehard Metallica fan since the age of 12 and I’ll be 42 next month. I’ve seen them live 25 times and have tickets to see them twice this summer and twice next summer. With that being said, I love watching you guys critique their albums. Can you please review the entire catalog of one of my all time favorite bands… TYPE O NEGATIVE…. DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was meant as a double album but Lars (the mastermind) understood that releasing two albums would help to compete their record contract which I think is fantastic idea. Now they own their own rights and music overall.
Yeah right! He’s a smart cookie huh? Also heard it was supposed to be a Use Your Illusion type release so two records on the same day
"what is james' ancestral background" was so random and then the reply was priceless😂
I always wondered what the 6 best songs from Load & the 6 best songs from ReLoad to make one coherent 12 song album would sound like, and which type of production would you record this album in? The mix of Load or ReLoad? Great video gents - your getting much better at this type of vid now.
I think a mix between the two records with the best songs and it is better than the black album. I know it's an unpopular opinion but imagine hero of the day, until it sleeps, bleeding me, the outlaw torn, fixxxer, devil's dance, fuel, the unforgiven 2, the memory remains together... it would have been an AWESOME album.
1: Fuel
2 King Nothing
3 Ain't My Bitch
4: Hero of the Day
5: Fixxxer
6: 2 x 4
7: Outlaw Torn
8: Bleeding Me
9: Wasting my Hate
10: Devil's Dance
11: Where the Wild Things Are
12: Prince Charming
@@redyyz4489 Thank you for having Prince Charming as the best 6 on ReLoad, cause that song kicks ass.
Right on: Bleeding Me is one of my top favorite Metallica songs of all time. Along with Fixxxer and The Outlaw Torn.
Devils Dance was first played live in 1995!!!! Fun Fact!!!
that and 2x4 at donington ‘95 if I remember right, unless they did it at the fan club show in the uk club that same yr first
Hey! We're down to only 23mins before the music starts haha, I very much enjoy these.
You were saying you have imposter syndrome and I totally understand that feeling! As a UA-camr myself I definitely feel that
But believe me, you are definitely one of my favorite reactors on UA-cam right now, anything you do I love watching, I have especially loved all these Metallica vids! Keep it up!
Thank you very much for the encouragement!
@@PatrickMusilek 🔥🔥
Will you do Death Magnetic? (pd: all nightmare long is.. goated)
We will! But first we have to do St. Anger! Then its DM and Hardwired!
I’d love to hear you react to the first few Danzig albums; those are immaculately produced in my opinion, and the songs are all so hard-hitting and well-structured.
It’s definitely a B-Bender on Unforgiven II
Do you guys think you're going to do St. Anger? It would be... interesting... to say the least.
Yeah they’re going chronologically.
They MIGHT do S&M next but they will definitely get to St. Anger eventually.
Reload got me into metal as a young teenager. 20 years later im still a proud metalhead because of this album.
You should do garage inc a double album of cover songs
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Welcome back Present Chris!
I have absolutely loved these album reactions. Metallica was the band that got me to want to play guitar. Looking forward to all the remaining Metallica content. Just as a suggestion, i would love to see you guys do album reactions for all of Trivium's albums. They are my 2nd fave band and each album is different from the last and would make for very entertaining reactions.
Load is the best of the two. But Reload has the best song...Fixxxer.
Where The Wild Things Are is one of Hetfield's masterpieces. Patrick and Chris can't help but feel it at 1:59:56. These videos are great guys! Keep it up
Sorry bro, but this song is Jason Newsted's masterpiece! That is why it's so unique and so much different from the rest of the songs on Reload. One of the very rare occasions when Jason was given the chance to show his songwriting skills to the world.
@@Szabby999
Cool if that's true. Good for Newstead, such a champion of Metallica for all those years!
There s a footage of 1995 where you see them still with long hair 😉, where they recorded the basic tracks in 1995 from both, but did completed in 1996 for reload
Never thought about bad seed sounding like zztop but now you ve mentioned it i cant unhear this! Nice call
Fixxer is my favorite song on the album.
I think the next goal is to get music album reactions that’ll fit in the Metallica algorithm. Love the format. Also, remote Chris has to be on every album show.
I love the poetry of these albums. Low man, memory, until it sleeps, king nothing, hero so so good.
Ill have to watch the reaction video again, but I think it was this video you guys were talking about production and whether they do things on purpose or they just havent figured it out. Not sure, but the other day was watching the making of hardwired to self-destruct on UA-cam, and I think its the the way they prefer and do things and mix things. A great watch if you get a chance, especially when you get to the hardwired review. They show production on each song
All songs were written and mostly recorded together. However, the first set of songs that were considered done went on Load in August '96 and the rest were fine tuned and completed and released in '97 so it has the exact same production/mix and is great in that regard.
To me, the songs that were nearly done were the more interesting / better ones, hence why Load has more groove and more varied songs like Hero and Sleeps, and why Reload is mostly samey (or coherent, maybe) and not as good.
The hi-hat coming in on Prince Charming sounds weird because the riff doesn't start on 1, but on 4-and. You can't really tell that in advance though as it begins with guitar only
Their live performances are what made them great . They put on some angry awesome METAL shows.
Will you guys be doing the Hardwired Album?
1:32:56 No, Chris, not Drop-D, just D/Db-standard. Metallica had never used a Drop tuning prior to -Human on the S&M album (and then used Drop-C, etc. extensively on St. Anger). It is a common fallacy that they used Drop-D on The Thing That Should Not Be, but that is easily disproven by watching live video from '86 of them playing the song, as well as more modern live performances of the song as well. Patrick was reading the information 100% correctly.
These Metallica reaction videos are the most entertaining things I’ve seen in ages. 😂 I honestly don’t think they’ve ever made a bad album. This is a cracker of an album. They broke out Carpe Diem Baby out of nowhere years ago on tour.
Here are some bands that I love that started after 2000: Mastodon and Baroness. Baroness has an album coming out in September actually.
3:11:32 I have an original run version of Death Magnetic and it was indeed a digipack style. The lyric book was actually glued in to the front cover and it was actually cut out all the way through the booklet to make the grave 3D.
Yep. Have one too
That was interesting. I am unfamiliar with Reload and Hardwired. They were just albums that passed me by but I listened along with you to Reload… and it was ok. It probably would’ve made an incredible double album. I look forward to your Hardwired listen.
There was a good reason why lars didnt turn it into a double album, I forgot why but you can look it up or something😅
What an ear man!... yes he is playing a telecaster with a b-bender.... amazing! (would love to have one just to play this song lol)
What I like the most about these Metallica reaction videos of yours is the Harry Potter books on the bookshelf behind and the Philosopher's Stone movie poster on the wall. You react to some "heavy" and "tough" music but still you don't hide you are a fan of arguably the most famous children's/young adult books of all time which I'm pretty sure some hard rock/metal music fans consider as "not hard or tough enough", if you know what I mean. I love Metallica and I love Harry Potter. Seeing both of them in the same videos is so fun 😄
To you inquiry about ‘Better than You’…I remember reading years ago that the song structure, particularly the ending, is meant to be a live feel as if they were in concert with a teaser on how and when the song would end.
Are you guys gonna do Garage Inc. and S&M? or are we just sticking to original material studio?
Also, Patrick, the lady on Memory Remains sounds f'ing amazing.
Marianne faithful sounds alright... but they actually did react to garage inc!
Just for the record, You missed a : in your timestamp for 0027:59 Fuel Discussion so it's messed the timestamp up a little. I love this album, so many good memories from this album and it's cool to hear a sound engineers perspective on it.
Thank you! On it to fix it!
You are correct! Unforgiven was played with a B Bender Fender. You can see James play it in the Live debut of the song at The Billboard Awards in 1997.
1:15 omg what an anomaly who would’ve thought that there was someone like that
55:30 thats a funny statement too especially when the bulk of their catalog during the 80s was influenced by nwobhm and other metal acts that weren’t priest or maiden. James was listening to the venom song buried alive when he got the idea for the intro to one. All the cool harmony stuff that cliff had a hand in on orion was from what kirk said in a interview influenced by thin lizzy, cliff said to kirk thats where he gets his stuff
Also have to say that as someone that's looked at a whole lot of Metallica discussions online for many many years, it's so amusing seeing both the "what if Load and ReLoad were one album" and "who was that in the background?!" topics come up here. Evergreen discussions to be sure.
But if...the History woule be different. Its like the butterfly effect. Things should be how its done. We cant go back in time
Thematically Reload feels like the sequel to the black album more than it does to Load
Great reactions. I'm a huge metallica fan and load and reload came outb when i was in my 20s and it was such a great time.
I dont listen to many newer rock bands. But one of my favorites which have come post 2000 is Ghost. And Metallica are fans of Ghost as well.
Yes that's true! Ghost might be a good band to look into int he future. I know OF them but I don't think I've heard a single song!
@PatrickMusilek I think you'll like them. They are a very unique band and have a following like Metallica. They also have fans that are split on them as their more recent albums are more mainstream, kinda like what Metallica did. I guarantee you will find something to love about Ghost!!
Oh and I'm actually first time watcher of this channel and I've watched the load, reload and 72 seasons reactions. Very cool!!
You guys seem about my age (early 80s baby) - how did you not hear any Veruca Salt growing up? They were all over MTV and Jukebox in the 90s. Enjoy your videos!
Patrick, I am so glad to see someone else that hears the, in my opinion, *VERY* apt comparison between Reload and 72 Seasons. Metallica is my favorite band, but a few days after the album came out, I even tweeted: "Really loving the new Metallica album - and the fact that they finally released a follow-up to 1997's hard-hitting Reload album!" LOL
P.S. - I said that with all the love in the world, as I love both Load and Reload, as well as the older thrash-ier stuff.
On slither do you not feel like james has been pitched shifted a key up?
This is definitely possible, but James started singing with an extremely thin and nasally timbre, and most of ReLoad suffers for it. There’s a live video of Metallica playing an acoustic rendition of Poor Twisted Me, and James sings super high pitched and nasally
When you asked what band influenced Metallica in the Load/Reload era, I would say Corrosion of Conformity. It seems like they were trying to go for that southern sludge sound that CoC was doing at the time. They even took CoC out on tour with them on the Load tour.
2:36:00 The problem with Low Man's Lyric is that it was produced, period. There are videos of this played acoustic (in Korea, I think) with James just sitting in a chair with a guitar and a hoodie and it's much, MUCH better since it's really a personal, emotional song. A lot of that sort of music falls apart as it passes through multiple hands and multiple pieces of equipment (which sounds like a ridiculous thing to say, but a heartbreaking song played live in front of you carries *so* much more with it, right?)
As far as the production on it's face, I'm not sure they actually knew what to do with it mechanically.
Topically... it's about homelessness sure, but because of heavy drug addiction. The voice of the song has had no success breaking addiction and is writing his last words to his family and sending notes to God before, in my opinion, taking a hot shot and just fading out to nothingness.... the slurred last lyrics getting softer and eventually to a hum, and the symbolism of the drone note from the hurdy gurdy continuing as if it were a flatlined ECG.
Oh i like the flatline reference!
Get a life lol
Makes me think of "bloody hammer" by Rocky Erickson. The full band studio version isn't bad, but the acoustic version is so much better, and it captures the weird dark content of the lyrics way better as well
I think you should absolutely listen to Garage Inc. Being a double album, the first disc was recorded during and/or after ReLoad. The second disc has recordings from throughout their career going back to like 1984, so you get a chance to hear their production over their whole career in essentially two hours.
Also, saying you don’t know the bands they’re covering is a cop out. It’s not like you knew these songs until you listened to them either.
To answer Present Chris’s question, yes that is a B-bender in Unforgiven II. It was also used on My Friend of Misery on the black album.
Great video again, Patrick!!
Another great review and reaction from you guys! ReLoad is definitely the heavier of the two albums. There are quite a bit of clean moments on Load whereas ReLoad is mostly heavier! Another big difference on ReLoad, as you guys mentioned is that James chose to sing with a more nasally vocal approach. Many people don't care for it BUT I love it! James is always trying something new each album! Fun fact: Better Than You won a Grammy 🤣🤣 I'd love for you guys to do a 6 hour video where you compare all the songs on Garage Inc. that Metallica covered with the originals! Also, before the Load albums, all rhythm and harmony guitars were done by James. When they started Load & ReLoad, James took a week off and came in only to find that Kirk had recorded a bunch of rhythm tracks and decided to keep them because they were loose. E Flat tuning was also Kirk's idea and James jumped on board because he could sing one step lower!
I read that when James writes lyrics he does the dahh dada dahh type stuff that Maryann was singing until he adds words and that originally she was going to have lyrics to sing but they ended up just liking her singing the da da dahh stuff instead
Listened to this whole at work for 45 minutes before I looked down and realized big homie has eye shadow😂😂
Wild that Better Than You won the 99 Grammy for best metal song.
VERY wild in deed! One of my least favorites off the album!
All we need to know about grammies.
Load is no St. Anger. lol. The Load/Reload albums are my sneaky faves. Not just the hit songs either, the deep cuts are beefy.
I’m excited to hear what you guys think of St. Anger…
the eyeliner honestly looks good on you
I'd say most Metallica fans haven't heard the "Lulu" stuff, but they've definitely heard the S&M albums. So I'd support reacting to the S&M's!
LuLu is not Metallica's album, it just features Metallica instrumentals that Lou Reed asked them for as a feature on the album. But it is not a Metallica album. Can't stand people saying it is.
My favourite parts is when present chris doesn’t agree with something someone says but instead of saying it he just opens his eyes really wide for the camera and scoffs
So like, every 5 minutes or so lol!
Would be interested in hearing your insights into the production of G n' R's Use Your Illusions 1 & 2.
Really enjoying these. Here's some post 2000 metal bands I like: Mastodon, Trivium, Mutation, Black Moth, Cut Yourself In Half (only one album, but I love it) and Gurt.
The fact you wear a nWo Wolfpac shirt was neat
Dude with the eye shadow never stops talking 😅
Metallica didn't use a drop tuning until -Human on S&M in 1999, everything else was just lower tunings. Bad Seed is C# standard tuning.
Is C# the same as D Standard? I was pretty sure that this song was D Standard and I hate to remember tunings unless its eb or e
@@Mine_CraftLP2 C# is not the same as D standard. It's a semi tone lower.
A metal band I love that formed after 2000 is Parkway Drive. Those guys kill it, every damn record. Massive riffs and massive vocals.

Although Im not sure Outlaw Torn and Fixxxer should be one after the other. Maybe put Where the Wild Things Are and then throw Mama Said in there as well, and finish the album with Fixxxer after those two songs.
I would like to issue you a challenge/request.
Avant-garde industrial band Laibach did the Sound of Music.
Now you should react to that creation
As for patreon I think having vote's as well as targeted suggestion is a good idea as you guys mentioned, personally i couldn't do more than a dollar but i would love to support your efforts
Due to the excessive compression and horrible clipping on the Death Magnetic album, I would highly recommend you to listen to the 'Mastered for iTunes' version instead of the retail version, or, trust me, you will suffer. But it's your decision tho.
Also, I'm excited to see you reacting to S&M and S&M², and Lulu as well.
PD: I'm loving this reactions.
Actually, two Bob Rock albums I'd love to hear you guys discuss is the '94 'Motley Crue' and the Veruca Salt 'Eight Arms To Hold You'. Both are MASSIVE-sounding rock records.
Keep rocking, guys! I'd like to hear you thoughts on Garage inc
You should do garage inc too. But on disk 2, don't read the dates when those tracks were released, try to guess which era they were based on the production of those songs 😅
The singer from Live you think sounds like Marianne Faithful is Ed Kowalczyk. You should do a reaction/review of their 94 album Throwing Copper. Pretty good 90s stuff. The music from the very solid rhythm section helps me get over Ed’s weird voice.
The overcompression in the original Death Magnetic i have heard called "brickwalled". Meaning there is so little difference between quiet and loud sounds that the audio wave looks like a brick wall. There is no dynamic range in the original cd.
