Kirby Allison Any advice how to remove excessive amounts of not just polish, but mink oil? Back when I wasn’t initiated into the ancient arts of Saphir, I tried accelerating the breaking in of a new pair of Fiorentini + Baker boots by applying mink oil and I put too much of it on the vamp. The boots developed some cloudy white-ish stains, especially in contact with water it was hideous. I tried to rectify the mess by applying liberal and I mean liberal amounts of Renovateur and neutral Pommadier and Pate de Luxe. It helped a little but in rain the boots still turned cloudy. Having learned proper technique and having obtained Renomat and black Pommadier and Pate de Luxe, I was able to make the boots presentable but I was never able to completely remove that old mess. I did use Renomat but the 100 ml bottle wasn’t enough. I now got bought the 500 ml bottle but the other day I saw a video where a guy was removing old polish with a heat gun and he claimed that chemicals are harmful to leather. Is it safe to douse boots in Renomat? Is there a stronger chemical for cases like mine, acetone perhaps? Is using a heat gun really more leather friendly?
whisky ......Works really well to be honest. one glass drunk..1 Glass to gently remove area in question. Be sure to finish 1 Litre bottle within 45 Minutes.😂
very helpful. I have a pair of shoes that have become lumpy from my earlier, heavy handed application of many layers of polish. This looks like a promising way to fix the issue.
Thank you. You are a total life saver. This shoe repair guy used a color on my brown shoes that was not the right color and I was seriously upset because they were very expensive and I felt it ruined the look of the shoe. He didn't even tell or ask me if it was alright to to use a different color he just slapped it on there. I was totally pissed.
Maybe not. I think acetone takes away the whole finish in one shot. This stuff might slowly take away layers of shoe shines so the factory finish can still be there then you can re-shine it so it's omega clean and polished. He did say that if you don't see anymore polish on the shammy then the shoe is completely stripped so maybe it's designed to be more gentle.
I have a harder time removing polish/wax with acetone than I do with the renomat. It seems like its a stronger wax solvent and is also less harsh on the leather. You can get the same results from both though.
Does this method also work on the top edges of the soles? My shoe guy used some dark brown finish on mine, and it looks painted. I want to removed that.
Dear Kirby, this is a fantastic tutorial. Thank you so much. I've been putting ridiculous amounts of cream and (what's worse) wax all over my shoes for well over a year and they ended up looking like a candle stick. Moreover, I have been using creams and waxes too dark for my shoes and they lost their beautiful light burgundy colour (I should have been using hermes red colour, and not burgundy which is too dark). I really hope Saphir Renomat fixes this...
Great video, I have mid tan shoes and purchased some mid tan polish which was darker will the reno may remove just the polish I put on about two weeks ago my shoes are now two tone where the original and the other polish is wearing off.
Question, does it work on copper, messing, metals etc. rings where you put your laces through? I have a pair of old redwing boots I want to restore, the rings are a very nice shade of golden metal but are partly covered with old black shoe polish. It doesn't come off when I try to scratch it. Thank you
Good info here Kirby. Can you share the best practices for cleaning chamis. How often do you clean them? Do you hand wash or machine wash? Are they washed separately or with other items?
I have leather boots that I have applied polish to months ago (not a mirror shine) that I don't need to remove. They are due for me to condition them, so I'm wondering will the leather conditioner still penetrate and do its job despite the polish with just a horse hair brush down, and a damp cloth wipe down before applying it? Thanks
Hello there, what would be an ideal long term polishing, removing, conditioning, creaming, waxing and polishing again cycle for shoes worn once a week? They don't see too much wear, but I am worried that underneath the wax they are secretly drying and cracking. On the other hand, reno'matting them every month is too often. How much wax needs to be removed before a conditioner can even get to the leather when applied? Thanks
I am not Kirby but I can answer this. I use conditioner and a light layer of cream polish once a month. Once a year I strip my polish and start again. As long as you are not caking the polish on so much that you can flick it off with your fingernail you are fine. When it comes to hard wax polish less is more.
How do I get brown shoe polish off the edge of a leather sole on a boot such as the redwing iron ranger 8111 where the natural colour is needed as like when new? Many thanks
Hey Kirby, you forgot to mention the shirt, I'm guessing Joe or Charvet. Also, I would love if you spoke about your outfit more often. Great video as usual.
I put a mid-brown leather jacket away in the cupboard next to a black leather jacket which I'd recently polished. There are now black areas on the brown jacket. Would Saphir Renomat remove them?
Kriby, I would like to know what the difference is between round and flat laces when considering formality. Other than the different looks, are flat laces less formal? When wearing a formal suit, with black cap toes, would the best option be round laces? Thanks for answering and the great content as always :) Cheers
flat laces are considered less formal. Waxed, round laces is as formal you can get unless you count silk laces which is exclusively used for black/white tie. Just be careful using waxed laces when it's freezingly cold outside as they tend to snap off easier.
Olivier De Vriendt The thinner the lace, the more formal. Normally, a round lace is the thinnest and most formal. However, we do have a very special super-narrow flat waxed lace that is beautiful and very formal. One of my favorites for black oxfords.
If I used wax, and is not build up, do I need to strip it before conditioning and polishing? If I have to, is renomat Okey or too much? What can I use then?
Kirby, thank-you so much for this video, it is very helpful! May I ask, can I also use Saphir Reno’Mat to remove shoe polish on boot stitching, for example on cowboy boots? Cheers. TG
I noticed Renomat/turpentine can strip it down to it's finish. How many layers of shoe cream/wax do you put on after? It took me a while to fill the pores again. I noticed the toe area needed like 5-6 areas to be spitshined into a glass look.
Kirby, your videos are very educational. Thank you. Would you recommend this product for an old pair of Gravati alligator shoes in very good condition? I want to stretch them out but I think I should remove the polish before I attempt that. They are currently very water resistant. When you put water on them it creates droplets. Thanks, again.
Hey Kirby, how do I re-apply polish when it's time to polish again. Do I need to remove previous polish first? Or can I apply next layer of polish and wax ontop of current layer? Using black polish and neutral wax (black shoes) Thanks!
Dear Kirby, I have a Saphir kit that I ordered that came with 2 noir black,1 medium brown, 1 dark brown, a cotton applicator rag, 2 polish applicator brushes, 2 polish brushes, 2 of the flat Bottle applicator brushes and bottle of the white/clear cream polish. I ordered an extra can of nior black and Mirror Gloss Clear, but was sent a light brown. I just kept it and ordered a Mirror Gloss Black & Clear and received both of those. I love all the saphir products. They work great on my Boots and Dress Shoes. I do have a Question about the Clear/White Cream Polish though. Can it be used on Black and Brown Boots and Shoes or would I need to order the Cream Polish in the Color of the Boots and Shoes? One last Question about the Gloss Mirror Polishes I ordered as well. When I opened them the Polish was whole intact in the can, but during the first use of both the Polish cracked across the middle. Is that normal for it to be that hard that it cracks and do I need to heat it up to melt it back or just use it as is?
Would this also work to remove a waterproofing wax from leather boots? The wax was built up in layers on top of the leather and over the years the boots have gotten much darker than their original finish. I used a rag and a Lot of elbow grease to wipe some of the wax off of one boot, revealing the much lighter original color. I’m looking for something to expedite the process.
Is Saphir Reno Mat safe to use everyday? Once mirror shone cracks, which is every once a week or so, shall I use renomat to clean? How do you shine again after the mirror shine cracks? The presidential shine is for only once or twice a year and I tend to crack my mirror shine easily. Any tips?
My favorite color is pink. I received a pair of pink leather Oxford shoes for Christmas last year. The thing is, I'm picky about the shade of pink. These were a beige-y, light pink. I got pink polish and my mom took them to the cobbler and asked for a light wash (I don't know how to polish shoes!) because I hoped to turn the shoes just a little bit pinker. However, the shoes are an opaque magenta now..... Which is also.... The wrong pink! Do you think I could use this method to take off some of that polish to hopefully get the shoes down to a preferred light bubblegum?
Kirby, is this appropriate to use on a lighter tan/brown colored leather? I have a pair of Paul Green booties that I love but the wax polish has left it dull and caked looking. I'm afraid of either stripping the color or leaving marks/stains in the light leather. Thank you for your easy to follow instructional video.
@kirbyallison I used acetone to strip a pair of shoes I bought on eBay recently. I got them back to a nice soft shine with cream polish, but when I went to get a higher shine with wax, it looks like I was removing pigment and making the color uneven. Any suggestions?
Hi Kirby, I use all your products. Love the sire. I have several pairs of Ferragamo drives that have white stitching. I mostly use Saphir Revenateur to keep the stitching sharp. Should I strip they finish as this video demonstrates. Thanks for the information. Kind regards, paul
Hi KirbyJust wanted to thank you for the laces, they are super and always lay flat, many others seem to twist and look awful, now a question I have a pair of 1960's brown single monk srtap. the polish over the years has become almost opaque which video would be best for me to watch
Hello Kirby, thanks for all your great content and products offered for sale on your site. Question: Can leather conditioner such as Saphir Renovateur and Pommadier Cream Polish be applied over Pate De Luxe and Maddaille D’OR Mirror Wax from previous polish sessions? Should Renomat be used between every polish session?
I am not Kirby but I can answer this. Renomat is best to start over or for a new pair of shoes, and after you should use Renovateur (conditioner) and then cream (conditioning polish) and then Pate De Luxe and Maddaille D’OR Mirror Wax (Hard Wax polish for high shines). You CAN use conditioner once a month or so, on the parts that flex, but as you can just rebuff your shoes and the polishes will shine again. I add a light layer of Hard Wax polish once every 3-6 months or so depending on how much I wear them.
Is Renomate safe to use on oil tanned boots/shoes as well? I have a rescued pair of loggers that appear to have wax polish on them and am exploring products to help strip it off.
I got a great deal on some Louis Vuitton sneakers. As I was using the Renomat to clean them I notices on some parts of the leather a waxy layer coming off. I really hope this isn't factory finish. My guess is that previous owner polished them at one point. I've read the Renomat won't remove factory finish.
I need help. I recently bought suede shoes and accidentally used the wrong brush, and now there's black shoe polish stains on my gray suede shoes ;_; "Please assist in removing the polish"
Hey Kirby, would Saphir RenoMat remove stains? I love your instructional videos, however, I have yet to see a video on a certain subject that I find quite important. How would you go about removing stains from leather shoes? I just got 3 pairs of used shoes for about $ 270, two Allen Edmonds, and one Crockett and Jones, and they all have minor staining around the heel area. I would love to see a video on that subject and thank you, for your great content.
Hey Kirby! Would the Renomat work for clarks desert boots you think? I honestly do not care if it strips some of the oils from the leather as I can easily replace that with a conditioner, but have you heard any cases where it has worked on those type of boots?
I would clean the shoe with the Reno'Mat first and then the Leather Cleaning Soap. Or one of the two if just using one. But, yes, clean before polishing.
joe guest Joe, Saddlesoap will certainly remove some polish, but it’s not as strong or as effective as the Reno Mat. Great example is that saddle soap is perfectly effective for areas of the shoe polished normally, but it will not remove the hard wax build up of a mirror shine. For that you would have to use the Reno’Mat.
Hi kirby, i love the reno mat as a product and use it every couple of months on my crockett and jones derbys and oxfords. But i have a friend who asked me if they could use it on a shoe that is probably not great quality calf leather. Do you think it would damage a poor quality large pore leather? Id hate to let him use it only to make them worse. Thanks. Adam Clark
Hey, I was wondering if you can help me out. I recently bought the allen edmonds strand cap toe oxford in coffee and wanted to polish them so I went with the light brown saphir polish because I did not want to darken the shoe. only problem is that it caked in the strands and was very difficult to remove and is still noticable because of the difference in color. Any recommendations on getting the cream polish out of the strands?
From what I've seen of the videos, your products appear to be some of the best available. Unfortunately, most of them are a little above my price range; or, at least, more than I can spend for the volume offered (I'm just the middle man in between my job and my bills). Can you suggest a less expensive alternative?
Since no one responded. Yes it’s a leather cleaner as well. But if you’re not removing wax or polish use light pressure to clean the shoe. Recommend using a cream conditioner following cleaning. :)
Joe Craig very very good response!!! I just picked up my first bottle of actual leather lotion and omg the difference in the before and after is amazing lol!!
Just because saphire is paying your video that does not mean lincoln and meltonian are bad, those are 5 star products specially Lincoln, saphir is way over price and the product is really not that good, so chill, you should advertise that the company is paying you to talk good about them Lincoln has history of being a outstanding product.
Lincoln is a good product. Their formulation is heavy petroleum-based, but it's okay. All of the techniques we spotlight in our channel can be used with any polish. We just feel that Saphir is the best (and it does pay for the channel).
I'm sure you are not the only one who need money. You can blame him if he had advertised an inferior product (which he didn't) but you can't blame him that he advertised a product.
Hello Kirby, nice information as usual. I really enjoy this videos, specially the 50$ Ebay challenge. I live outside the US so getting nice shoes like Allen Edmonds for a fraction of the cost is a viable option instead of full retail price when travelling there. I have question that I do not know if you already answer on another video or Q&A. I got a stain (from food so oil based) on a pair of light brown leather shoes and I wanted to know what will be the best way to clean it up without darkening the shoe at all (or minimum darkening) is the Reno Mat good for this or the Saphir Leather Cleaning Soap or should I use another product/method? Thanks a lot in advance
First off, I love your maintenance and care videos; so thank you for making and posting them! Now, in our house I'm the one that does the clothing and accessory care and maintenance. My husband recently purchased a pair of Clark's Bushacre 2 chukka boots in a finish called "beeswax". I am at a loss for how I should try to take care of these. The finish just isn't what I am used to. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
It could be the quality of the leather as well as the dyeing process in the factory. What matters most is that its uniform, so if it came off in one spot, you kinda have to do the same to the rest of the shoe, or at least create a fade or transition before conditioning and polishing.

What is Reno’Mat? Acetone for 30 times the price?
That is a good question, I was wondering the same.

Acetone is my preference but can actually wear down your leather and cause minor issues with future product applications

Mr.Kerby very helpful video as always. Do you prefer wearing a Sneaker or have you worn any at some point? Please let me know.
Can I use acetone?
I got black shoe ink on my orange shoe stitch
how is the bottle called again?
Quick dumb question. Can you machine was the chamois? Is there a need to wash it? Or just use multiple chamois?
Never mind. Found the answer on the website
Where do you get it
It'd be good if these videos weren't just an advertising. I'm Argentinian, I can't get the product you're using.
I need help. I recently bought suede shoes and accidentally used the wrong brush, and now there's black shoe polish stains on my gray suede shoes ;_;
"Please assist in removing the polish"
Should I use a conditioner after renomat and before polishing?
Yes

Neil Patel Sure. It works on anything. I’d use the Greasy Leather Lotion to Condition.
I'm ordering renomat presently. However, does isopropyl work for removing shoe wax without hurting the leather?
You can use it, but you've got to be careful it doesn't also take off the dyed finish.
If i'm doing a deep clear/restoration, should I wash the shoes prior to the removing the polish, or wash the shoe first?
I would clean the shoe with the Reno'Mat first and then the Leather Cleaning Soap. Or one of the two if just using one. But, yes, clean before polishing.
I love how you look straight from the 60's. Just awesome
From where can get SAPHIR Reno Mat and what is the price?
Does saddle soap remove old wax polish
joe guest Joe, Saddlesoap will certainly remove some polish, but it’s not as strong or as effective as the Reno Mat. Great example is that saddle soap is perfectly effective for areas of the shoe polished normally, but it will not remove the hard wax build up of a mirror shine. For that you would have to use the Reno’Mat.
Is there a difference in purpose between saddle soap and Reno mat?
Reno Mat removes polish and was while saddle soap removes dirt and light build up from everyday wear and lightly hydrates the leather
Hey Kirby,
I have the Bickmore Bick 1 leather cleaner that I use for my western boots occasionally. Would this work in place of the Reno Mat?
Thanks
Just an idea, Maybe using a q-tip and a little bit of acetone?
From what I've seen of the videos, your products appear to be some of the best available. Unfortunately, most of them are a little above my price range; or, at least, more than I can spend for the volume offered (I'm just the middle man in between my job and my bills). Can you suggest a less expensive alternative?
What is Renomat reacts with the finish of my leather shoe, how can i strip off the polishes?
Some sort of leather soap..
how does this work compared to saddle soap?
Reno Mat removes polish and was while saddle soap removes dirt and light build up from everyday wear and lightly hydrates the leather
How do I remove the color of my shoes from brown leather?
Saphir Reno’Mat is ideal or fingernail polish remover
I cannot mirror shine after the renomat, especially when i try to shine with water! What am i missing?
u missing polishing mate
Hello Mr Allison,
Thanks for that video! But I have one question: is this method suitable for unpolished leather?
Since no one responded. Yes it’s a leather cleaner as well. But if you’re not removing wax or polish use light pressure to clean the shoe. Recommend using a cream conditioner following cleaning. :)
Joe Craig very very good response!!! I just picked up my first bottle of actual leather lotion and omg the difference in the before and after is amazing lol!!
Joshua and Rose Bartley p
Can I use this to lighten the colour of leather? And remove the shine if I want the leather to have a matte finish?
Just because saphire is paying your video that does not mean lincoln and meltonian are bad, those are 5 star products specially Lincoln, saphir is way over price and the product is really not that good, so chill, you should advertise that the company is paying you to talk good about them Lincoln has history of being a outstanding product.
Lincoln is a good product. Their formulation is heavy petroleum-based, but it's okay. All of the techniques we spotlight in our channel can be used with any polish. We just feel that Saphir is the best (and it does pay for the channel).
Money talks...
Yeah, don’t hate on my boy Lincoln, (kiwi can burn in hell though).
I'm sure you are not the only one who need money. You can blame him if he had advertised an inferior product (which he didn't) but you can't blame him that he advertised a product.
That’s all one sentence, bud?
HELP!! I have a question not specifically about this video. My son thought it would be a nice surprise to use black shoe polish on my suede shoes.
Thanks Kirby, I'm in the army cadets and have to polish my boots perfectly, I always come straight to you as you know best.
Ellis Milne Gwent and Powys acf ftw ✌️
My shoe won't shine anymore 😢
First off, I love your maintenance and care videos; so thank you for making and posting them! Now, in our house I'm the one that does the clothing and accessory care and maintenance. My husband recently purchased a pair of Clark's Bushacre 2 chukka boots in a finish called "beeswax". I am at a loss for how I should try to take care of these. The finish just isn't what I am used to. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Christine Suggs How would you describe the finish? Can you post a link to a picture?
hopefully this works...? www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004DCV1GS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Is this product safe on Gore-tex lined shoes?
I accidentally removed some shoe colour off my tanned shoe, is it cause of the bad leather, bad paint or am I just rubbing and using too much renomat?
It could be the quality of the leather as well as the dyeing process in the factory. What matters most is that its uniform, so if it came off in one spot, you kinda have to do the same to the rest of the shoe, or at least create a fade or transition before conditioning and polishing.
This guy should play in "The Office"
