My grandma has a statue of a gila monster I was obsessed with as a kid and she's the only person I know who's seen one in the wild. I always heard they would come out in the spring and early mornings and you'd be lucky to see them even once in a lifetime. Super interesting lizards!
incredibly jealous. i live in Utah so I can't have one. thing that really sucks is if I lived another 20 miles north I'd be in Idaho where they are legal. tears of sadness, but I love your monster and thanks for making a video on him. one day I will have my own.
Hey I love your video and I know the science I understand its crazy Ive kept reptiles and inverts for 20+ years and my Gila is extreamly social and will get on his hind legs against the habitat when he wants to be picked up. He likes to sleep on my hand or lap. Its funny when he does not want back in his house he will hiss at me without the jerk responce. Like he is arguing. Of all my reptiles he is the most friendly and one of the few that actually wants attention. Yes I never forget what he can do and I am always aware of him and my body location. He was bred from a breeder who has been breeding them for 50 years ( I dont know if that has anything to do with his unusual temperment)
When I was I elementary school the 7th graders were raising gila monsters from eggs to adulthood in the science lab!!! It was awesome going in there and watching them!!! Don't know how legal this was tho 😅😅
Beautiful lizard, love the bumpy scales and color pattern. I might get another herp one of these days, but I'm not ready to care for one of those little beasts.
Great video! I have always been fascinated by these lizards ever since I was a kid. I remember the Disney show that documented one interacting with a prairie dog (?). Thank you
Excellent precautionary advice. Some peopl forget. They are not pets and we are not their friends. We are their stewards who help them thrive and survive.
Is everything in this video still accurate? Because I’m looking into one and being able to put a gila in a 40 gallon is to good to be true because everyone is saying 75 gallons.
Thank you so much for this man! Just gotta ask, what’s your feeding frequency for these guys? I’m in the UK and breed exotics (own 26 myself) and I’m filing for my UK DWA licence to get one of these. The assessment fine could be £500 but it will worth it!
They can live 20-30 years easy with proper care. There is a beaded lizard that has been in captivity over 50 years and was collected in the wild as an adult!
What about Price Animal Company? I’ve been considering getting into venomous lizards and have been eyeing their Heloderma horiddums, but can find little to no second hand information about them online.
Hey I'm new to gila monsters I'm considering owning one what is your guidelines on cohabiting a male and female does this affect cage size or is it not recommended sorry if I seem vague I'm just really new to this
Hi I would add 50% more space for 2 gilas. Basically I'd do a 4ft by 2ft floor space for two animals. I have seen many pairs do well together as well as two females do well. Males will fight. Also just be sure they both have space and ability to utilize resources within the enclosure equally ie. hide, drink, get warm or cool without competition for the resource from the other.
Hey I have a bin that’s the equivalent of a 55 gallon tank would that be to big I know you said a 40 gallon breeder is perfect size but would the bin be big enough ?
Everything but the water bowl . I find gilas do find soaking as long as not prolonged. A day is fine. But then remove them. Mine are fine and growing well.
Also quick question you mentioned egg whites as a treat is there any reason that yolk is bad for them being that in the wild they would most likely consume the whole egg? I know you have a good reason not criticizing just curious
In the wild they would likely be smaller eggs and fertilized and not like our chicken eggs. Plus the yolk is nearly pure cholesterol whereas the white is protein. I got the info about it from Dr. Seward the leading expert in gila captive care. 😁
I would look at the natural history specifics of the species you’re looking at keeping and base it off that. I believe many of the beaded species humidity ranges are slightly higher than gilas but Im not 100%. Its been 17 years since I worked with em. I recall lightly misting them occasionally...
*me freaking out because I live in montana and theres a Gila monster breeder here* Also me Ok but I did just get a tegu a few months ago Butttt- *These are the last words of relatable tics* R. I. P college savings
@@ReptileMountainTV i'm in Tucson Az... i am really interested in their color patterns and range of colors... do you know a good place in Tucson i might be able to find some to take pictures of? if not Tucson maybe Phoenix.
Thanks. I'm curious as to what triggers hibernation in captivity? What do you do for them, if anything, during that time? It is fascinating to be able to observe them in such a way. Is there a video that talks about this?
I know it’s been a while but I know you said egg whites but what if I gave my boy a whole fertilized button quail eggs. I breed quail and I would like to feed him a couple. Do you think it’s safe
Yes they need a heat mat on a thermostat or overhead heat. I use cypress mulch currently and have used aspen sanichips, pea gravel, and organic topsoil all with success.
@@ReptileMountainTV holy cow I didn't think you were actually going to answer. I have overhead heat right now I just didn't know if they needed. so I should be good with overhead he that's good to. Thanks for help
@scarface1556 it is on the same level as the western diamond back. The real difference is delivery of venom. Snakes obviously have needle like fangs to inject it directly. Gila monsters have squared rounder teeth so they can't deliver the anywhere near the same ammout of said venom.
I disagree ok on the water bowel... not trying to discredit but mine move back and forth .Zero problems I like your video but water bowls I rotate the bowl two days a week but soaking is fine honestly.
Disagreement doesn't discredit. No worries. Dr. Seward also mentions the over soaking issue. That leads me to believe its more common than one might think. It certainly may not be a universal issue as you noted. Cheers!
Ummmm your input on reptiles not having the mental compasity to have emotion is very incorrect. Idk when this was posted but there are new studies that are starting to prove otherwise
Please link them then. Capacity for problem solving and learning is not in anyway proof of emotion capacity. Neither of such equates to the physiological components linked to high level emotion. But I’d love links stating they have a limbic lobe, extensive cortical folding. Etc... Has their anatomy changed as of recent?
You are the Bob Ross of Blue Tongue skinks. And today we're just going to make some happy little lizards. 😀

You should do a collab with clints reptiles. Together you guys would be the ultimate science team
That would be fun. He’s super tall and Im short. So we could be the long and short of it all lol 😂
I love them, I only have 1 right now but I'm going to get more this year
One of my all-time favorite reptiles. Thanks for the informative video!
Great video TC! What a cool lizard. But I think I'll stick to the skinks!!!!
Thanks Daryn 👍🏼😊
Your attention to detail is impeccable
Thank you 😊
Got to hold my very first one a few weeks ago!
I came home to a beautiful 6-7 inch Gila Monster in my garage (I live in Tucson, AZ). How can I help it to survive and move out?
Aaaaaahhhh.. How awesome!!!
How did you get that resolved?

Best Gila video on UA-cam.
Definitely interested in one , and I’m glad I seen this video

I've wanted one of these guys for some time, but I'm from Arizona :-( Beautiful animals!
so cool they are on my property saw 5 this year
Great video. I think these guys are so beautiful and interesting. Thanks, TC.
I love these lizards.
I always thought they were a lot bigger than that but umm I think im going to get a uromastyx instead
Uromastyx are cool. I had one and loved it. When they get excited, their colors really come through.
I desperately want to own one but I've never kept any sort of reptile before. Aside from the venom are they harder to take care of than other lizards?
I don't think I'm going to get one soon but still awesome😃
Cool vid
Thanks for the informative video! Just wondering if only egg white is to be provided? Why not the yolk? Thanks
The white has the protein
This was a really nice and informative video!

Just curious tho😁, really cool lizard, love it since I've seen it from the first time..
Yes very
I really like those rocks for your Gila’s cave. What did you use to make that?
Thank you! Those are real rock from our local stone company. They’ve been bolted with tapcon screws so they can’t slip and harm him.

One animal per enclosure unless you are breeding.
How often do Gila monsters poop? I have a 5 year old adult male and want to know how often they poop?
Would you recommend the same care guide for Mexican beaded lizards?
Very similar yes, except for larger space to include height and I think they can take a bit more humidity as well.
Hey I have a bin that’s the equivalent of a 55 gallon tank would that be to big I know you said a 40 gallon breeder is perfect size but would the bin be big enough ?
It depends on the dimensions. They should have at least 18 in wide and 24 in long.
Spent almost the whole video staring at the challenge coin collection
Awesome, coolest reptile ever
Amen!!!
does he have a blue or black tongue? i thought only 4 animals had blue tongues
Its black but in certain light it has a blue tint. Which makes sense because melanin is what makes black and blue color.
Where did you get the led lights for your gila? What brand?
I think they are GE. I bought em from Home Depot. 😊
I was raised on a Gila monster farm we wake up at 3 AM to go milk the Gila monsters 🥸
That sounds epic!
awesome

You can't legally in AZ but tbh even if there was a permitting process for a CB Gila I'm not sure that I want so many people up in my business.
