  • Waypoints is a powerful cinematic tool to create great repeatable footage... but there's a problem...
In this video I will share my experience trying to make the most of the waypoints feature for the specific purpose of smooth flights and repeated missions which can be convincingly edited together.
My videos are aimed at beginners just like me... we love drones, flying them, and capturing some great moments with them.

Spot on! Great Video! I never realized how much my Mini3Pro was lacking in computational ability until I got my Mini4Pro.... and then I realized the value of the powerful onboard systems!
    Cheers from Texas!

Cheers, yes it is pretty great the way onboard missions turn out. Thanks for watching and your kind comment 😊

An excellent video, well presented and narrated. I have been flying a number of years and found it made me reconsider the way I do things, we sometimes miss the obvious. Thank you

Great video, Ola! Another tip can also be fly a bit further from the subject so you can zoom and adjust the clips slightly to make them match even more perfectly in post.

      Thanks Liam!
Yes, I still had to do some minimal crop zooming in post, even for the good flight. Hit & miss, trial & error 😅😅
Thanks for watching, commenting, and contributing ❤

Long time ago I used to do Litchi way point missions with a DJI Air (1) drone. Beautiful smooth flights. Only resolution was limited to 1920x1080px.
The last days I reactivated my DJI air 2 and set up some Litchi waypoint flighs, but was very unimpressed with the results.
The video recordings were all shaky. The wonderfully slow and smooth recordings that I was used to with the old drone (Litchi with the old DJI Air) no longer exist.
Now I have 4K videos, but I can't use them because of the instability/shaking and jitter.
What I did not know until today is, that the Mavic Air 2 drone is no longer controlled via the DJI SDK, but via simulated joystick movements.
Thank you for showing the reasons so clearly in this video. Very informative! I have hardly found any information about this situation on various forums.
But what should you do now if you want to fly waypoint missions? Trial and error?
Or is there currently software that can be used for this? I have only found the DJI Flighthub 2 software for the large professional drones, such as the DJI Matrice or Mavic 3E.

There are, in my mind, 3 things to be done. Which order you would rank these as is a matter of budget, needs, and legislation where you fly (because some older drones cannot fly everywhere in certain regions).
      1. Get a new drone with built in waypoints. The Mini 4 Pro, Air 3, and Mavic 3 series all have this. They fly with waypoints missions onboarded, so just as smoothly as you were used to with the Air. The Mavic 2 series is also an option with built in waypoints, but... that brings us to no. 2:
      2. Get a drone which is compatible with 3rd party software (such as Litchi) but which onboards the entire mission. Simply put, dji drones that use the Go4 app are in this category. Including the Mavic Air of course, but also the Spark, the Mavic Pro, and the mighty Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom. Also the later Phantoms.
All of these have 4K cameras (except the Air, as it was). The downside is that you would be using older drones. The big upside is being able to plan the missions on a computer.
      3. If you must stick to a drone using virtual stick mode, then follow the tips provided in the video. Calm weather, different runs with new satellite lock, relatively simple missions, no quick pans. It still won't be 100% as good as onboarded missions, but could get close.
I have the Mini 4 Pro because it's very convenient for flying in the city.
I have the Mavic 2 Zoom, which flies like a dream and is practically like a tank in the air, unaffected by high winds (unlike the Mini 4 Pro).
Both of these fly perfect waypoints missions, but where I live the Mavic 2 is illegal close to people and buildings.
I also have the Air 2S. That one is no good for waypoints, unless we are talking still photography. But it flies so well and shoots great footage otherwise!
It does have waypoints in Hyperlapse mode, so it's capable. But they didn't implement the full feature.
Thanks for watching and for your input!!

I mostly stuck with the hyperlapse waypoints on the Air 2s. Never did get Litchi but thought about it. I have been experimenting with the video waypoints on the Air 3 as well as it’s hyperlapse waypoints and have been a bit frustrated with the drone not being able to successfully run the missions the same multiple times. Maybe being more of a still photographer who likes meticulous control on the framing of my shots has exaggerated my frustration when the waypoint missions end up drifting away from my shots. I find it more of an issue when flying over water where the drone will completely drift off course and point at something else. I’ve tried turning off the downward sensors and not seen an improvement. Anyway, like you said, trial and error, and learning more each time I go up.
