"She’s Baldly Lying": Dana Frank Responds to Hillary Clinton’s Defense of Her Role in Honduras Coup

  • democracynow.org - As Hillary Clinton seeks to defend her role in the 2009 Honduras coup, we speak with Dana Frank, an expert on human rights and U.S. policy in Honduras. "This is breathtaking that she’d say these things. I think we’re all kind of reeling that she would both defend the coup and defend her own role in supporting its stabilization in the aftermath," Frank says. "I want to make sure that the listeners understand how chilling it is that a leading presidential candidate in the United States would say this was not a coup. … She’s baldly lying when she says we never called it a coup."

    • @jackchorn
      @jackchorn 8 років тому +5

      Christopher Harrison check out those two libertarian cities proposed in Honduras. They were opposed by the last democratically elected president- and a lawyer who was fighting the building of the cities was assassinated at a wedding in a church. 50 something jounalists have been killed since the last coup- 4 of the 6 generals were trained at the school of Americas in Georgia. US supported the coup- or at least is keeping up with the Right wing latin American policy. The funny thing is that this was called the domino theory- the fight to keep the USSR from our backyard. But now what is the excuse? We must be honest and admit it is a war being conducted by to prevent a philosophy- its a war of capitalism v socialism. Ironically capitalists always holler about the free market- yet they won't allow the free market of the people to choose their own philosophy. I find it interesting people call the Democrats Left- while the last Democrat congress voted again to spend our tax $ to overthrow the democracy of Venezuela. Certainly this is not Left- and certainly Obama and Clinton are following the Right wing foreign policy. Why are they so afraid to allow a socialist government in Latin America? They are so afraid it will work.

    We desperately need to oust the Clintons.

  • @Syncopator
    @Syncopator 8 років тому +1

    As much as I dislike Clinton, this story is poorly presented, and important contextual information is missing. And I've also seen it claimed that,
    "Zeleya tried to circumvent congress and change the constitution to eliminate his term limits. He was essentially trying to become a dictator with the help of Chavez. This act, according to their constitution, immediately strips one of their citizenship. Congress voted, and the supreme court approved the removal of Zelaya. At congress' request, the Military leaders removed Zelaya. A temporary president was put in, until elections could take place. The current president was elected into office via election of the people."
    And Juan Gonzales' interview with Clinton on the issue makes it look like Hillary pushed to NOT declare it a coup because it would withdraw US aid from the people of Honduras which would not be helpful to the situation.
    I personally don't know enough about the situation to be able to assess the validity of any of these claims, and Dana Frank's rampage against Clinton seems to be a bit too emotionally charged, or maybe she's just nervous about being on TV-- but it makes it hard to make sense out of any of this, and look like a quick and dirty hit piece.
    So if there's a story here, it may be a fascinating one, but I couldn't tell you what it is from any of this.

    • @francefiliault2629
      @francefiliault2629 8 років тому

      It was illegal, the president never had a day in court and Hillary tried to push for another election trying to push things under the rug.

    • @Syncopator
      @Syncopator 8 років тому

      +France Filiault I guess this gives it a little more context, but I'm still trying to sort it out with some help from here:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Honduran_constitutional_crisis
      So Zelaya didn't want to leave, which was deemed illegal by the supreme court, a coup by the military removed Zelaya, and then the coup itself was deemed illegal because of the way he was deported, something the military did apparently to avoid violence. Clinton stuck our nose in to try to sort it out, avoiding calling it a coup in order to preserve US aid, and a bunch of other stuff happened-- a shady election? An interim government? Human rights violations? A big mess it would seem. But it's not clear to me exactly what was wrong if anything, with what Clinton did. Simply not call it a coup in order to keep US aid from being withdrawn? If that's the extent of it, the rationale seems reasonable, even if it's skating US law somewhat, the reasoning seems not malicious or self-serving or even particularly incompetent. I mean, it appears it was a complex situation and laws that don't take into account extenuating circumstances may not have been serving us well there. And was Obama on board with it? And it seems like an election could be a way to sort such a mess out, so that in itself doesn't seem to be the issue-- or was it something about how the election was implemented? The problem was the election was rammed through too hurriedly in an attempt to stabilize things more quickly?

      +mikerevs34 Well I believe wherever the National Endowment for Democracy and USAID turn-up then you can expect a coup. With Egypt, I read an article in Al Jazeera which shows US NGO's funding opposition protesters, opposition government officials, and I believe opposition media.
      *Al Jazeera: "Exclusive: US bankrolled anti-Morsi activists" (July 10, 2013):*
      Documents obtained by the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley show the US channeled funding through a State Department programme to promote democracy in the Middle East region. This programme vigorously supported activists and politicians who have fomented unrest in Egypt, after autocratic president Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising in February 2011.
      The State Department's programme, dubbed by US officials as a "democracy assistance" initiative, is part of a wider Obama administration effort to try to stop the retreat of pro-Washington secularists, and to win back influence in Arab Spring countries that saw the rise of Islamists, who largely oppose US interests in the Middle East.
      Activists bankrolled by the programme include an exiled Egyptian police officer who plotted the violent overthrow of the Morsi government, an anti-Islamist politician who advocated closing mosques and dragging preachers out by force, as well as a coterie of opposition politicians who pushed for the ouster of the country's first democratically elected leader, government documents show.
      Information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, interviews, and public records reveal Washington's "democracy assistance" may have violated Egyptian law, which prohibits foreign political funding.
      It may also have broken US government regulations that ban the use of taxpayers' money to fund foreign politicians, or finance subversive activities that target democratically elected governments.
      'Bureau for Democracy'
      Washington's democracy assistance programme for the Middle East is filtered through a pyramid of agencies within the State Department. Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars is channeled through the Bureau for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL), The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), USAID, as well as the Washington-based, quasi-governmental organisation the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
      In turn, those groups re-route money to other organisations such as the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and Freedom House, among others. Federal documents show these groups have sent funds to certain organisations in Egypt, mostly run by senior members of anti-Morsi political parties who double as NGO activists.
