I notice that, in this interview, Cornel refers to some white people as "brother". He really comes off as someone who believes that we're all in this together.
Now, if Trayvon had gotten up after the beating and began to walk away, and Zimmerman then got up and shot Trayvon, you could make a case that Zimmerman murdered him because he got "his ass whooped." But the fact is that Zimmerman fired his gun while Trayvon was still on top of him, giving him repeated blows to the head, and that is self defense. It wouldn't have mattered what color he was. The jury did their job.
Dr. West is one of the most honest civil rights leaders. He has absolutely no problem calling people out, even if they are black, brown, blue, green or fucking purple. He kicks ALOT of ass, we need MORE people like him.
Dr West makes clear and valid points based on factual evidence. Having the ability to see through the distractions , articulate and express intelligently towards the issues of today. It's sad when others belittle any man of his caliber. Well said Dr West.
Hotep brotha West keep speaking truth to power !! You and Tavis are really the only African Americans that are willing to hold Obama accountable for his actions while in office.
You said it ALL, sister and I'm pleased as a Black American Muslim who's ancestors are African and Cuban descent they built this so called country (which as emulated Rome) to become an EMPIRE!!! AND I RATHER YOU HATE ME FOR WHO I AM THEN TO LOVE ME FOR WHO I'M NOT!!!
Cornell West is one of the truly great minds in all of history. We are blessed that he lives in this era. If only more people would listen to the wisdom he expresses.
WOW...I love and respect Dr.West, he more often than not speaks with great compassion and sincere love of and for whomever he's defending. Yet whenever he discuss President Obama there seems to be a tone present that reveals an alternate agenda of which I know not of...now that's not to say he doesn't make some very good points and shed light on some often overlooked happenings but he tends to discount or flat out ignore nuance and complexity of the issues when President Obama is concerned. 2bad
This is absolutely true. so what has happened to change your mind, Cornell in 2016 election now that Bernie is gone? this is really disgusting distinction between this conversation and now. wow. people change.
Stalking has a specific legal definition. What GZ did was NOT stalking, legally. GZ did nothing that should have instigated a physical confrontation with TM. All GZ did was ask him a question and follow him a bit. That shouldn't instigate any reasonable person, but TM wasn't acting reasonable that night. The witness testimony shows TM went to his house and then RAN to where he knew GZ was. Why else would he do that other than to attack GZ?
What you don't understand is that it starts with recognizing the problem. The hardest part is which avenue one has to walk through in order to execute them and there are many avenues to go by as an educator, it beneficial to allow the student to reach that conclusion for themselves instead of the teacher ramming their own conclusions down your throat!!! Cornell is brilliant and only speaking of the contradictions which occurs and informing the viewers of it.
Cornel West speaks the truth. Something that bothers those who don't have the mental capacity to reason an issue and come to a logical conclusion. He upsets the masses who pick a side and cheer their team on no matter what goes on behind the scenes.
I absolutely adore Cornel West. I particularly love this interview because Cornel West assumes the audience knows what he's talking about (which is a safe assumption for a DemocracyNow crowd), but Amy Goodman having to rein him in and have him explain his references is classic. I also very much agree with each of West's points, solidarity my brothers!
i can't think of many people that would take that kind of disrespect and not at least get into an argument possibly get into a fight for something like that, trayvon acted like a good amount of us would.
You're wrong. Witness Rachel Jeantel testified that Trayvon caused GZ to lose track of him and that Trayvon made it to the house where he was staying. At that point he's "safe" from GZ. GZ isn't following him because he doesn't know where he is. She also says Trayvon still knew where GZ was. At that point Trayvon RUNS from the house to GZ to confront him. Why else would he do that other than to fight him? He sure isn't scared.
I believe, in the case of Trayvon., and Zimmerman, that that whole event was an event between those two,(the shooting) each a little unstable and unpredictable, and ,we,the variety of media controlled, people, see what we want in the case;A wannabe policeman, and a wannabe thug, but neither are what they want to be??we see a Jew, killing a black. a young poor kid, being killed by a middle class white, a gun user protecting himself from an authority hating black. But ,the event is not as simple as most of us see it.
That shifting of the burden of proof is precisely why I don't like "Stand your ground" laws. In a fistfight, self-defense is difficult to establish, and that fact tends to encourage people to walk away from an unnecessary confrontation. It defies all reason to make a deadlier form of confrontation fall under less scrutiny. At the end of the day, we should be spending less time looking back, and focusing on high-profile cases where people are already dead, and spend more time looking forward.
The reason why the defense didn't use the "Stand your ground" law is that the last thing they (or the state) wanted to risk, was jury nullification of the law itself.
I love and respect brother Cornel West. He speaks about the issues that most Black people in his position won't go anywhere near because of fear of their white counterparts.
Love and respect to Mr.West!!! I hope he gives a speech to counteract O's speech on MLK Day. I read O is going to give a speech in the same place and time MLK gave his famous speech. And bells might be ringing across the country. Get the barf bags ready.
" Mine is love of all people" Your love is one of deception. As uttered in your book of deception: “Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.” - Proverbs 3:31 Or in laymans terms, do not rise up when being slaughtered. Accept your 'lot' in life. Remain passive, as any attempt, at even complaint, will be determined as being racial hatred. As I said earlier, those days are DONE. OVER.
The idea that there is a man, or group, that holds the strings, is always a depressing thing to hear. There is no such thing, history and the present move on, from one power structure to another and one thing is certain, power is not top down, but lateral, diagonal and chaotic.
I agree with what C. West is saying 100% and I'm white and part Aboriginal. N I know how racism exists in Australia and racist policies and criminalizing of minorities. So JaVern. Don't say all whites aren't aware of the injustice going on against black and brown Americans. Not so. Some are. "Those who are for you are not against you".
These antics "hide and conceal" 10:10 the grass root level injustices that affect the poor and the down trodden. Wouldn't this be PRIORITY ONE to any leader who claims to represent those people? And if not, WHY NOT?
"when you strive for equality before freedom you get neither, when you strive for freedom before equality, you get a high degree of both" -Milton Friedman there's a problem with this ideology, which implies that socioeconomic inequality is inevitable, in that its a disproportionate inequality amongst disenfranchised MINORITIES!!
A moot point at best. Trayvon would never have been in the position to attack Zimmerman had he done what he was told to do by dispatch and stayed in his car. The situation starts and ends with that mere fact alone.......which further solidifies the idea that this trial should have been about Zimmerman's decision to pursue Trayvon, not Trayvon's decision to attack Zimmerman in self-defense.
That sums up the critical situation about our country as a whole. We are all on "strings" or circumstances that we cannot resist. We can't speak out on our jobs because of fear of a "worsen" poverty than we already have. We as AMERICAN, NOT just a single race, but a WHOLE, we outweigh these puppeteers.... so why don't we ACT against them? It is time for reform!!!!!! We need to stop acting like grown HELPLESS children!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!
Love to hear this guy take, poet and physiological at the same time. Nice to hear a guy speak about reality and the truth too.
He is 100 percent RIGHT!
CORNEL WEST ALWAYS SPEAKS THE TRUTH. A PROVEN ADVOCATE FOR THE OPPRESSED
This man called it .
I notice that, in this interview, Cornel refers to some white people as "brother". He really comes off as someone who believes that we're all in this together.
I totally agree with Mr. West. Because if it had happened to one of his daughters, then it definitely would have been a different outcome!
Love him
Preach, brother West!
Preach preach preach!
I gotta read some of brother Cornell's writing
My biggest inspiration

He makes excellent points.
Dr. West is one of the most honest civil rights leaders. He has absolutely no problem calling people out, even if they are black, brown, blue, green or fucking purple. He kicks ALOT of ass, we need MORE people like him.

Your point is well made and well taken.
Hotep brotha West keep speaking truth to power !! You and Tavis are really the only African Americans that are willing to hold Obama accountable for his actions while in office.
Good point .
The end of this one was like poetry. Wow.

God bless this man for saying everyone is precious and really meaning it, I believe.
Dr West is a giant of truth. We have so few who will speak like him in this NSA stasi state.
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing this wonderful analysis by Cornel West :)
Detainment without due process is the very definition of unjust. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
Yes it is about time! I love it!
Cornell West is one of the truly great minds in all of history. We are blessed that he lives in this era. If only more people would listen to the wisdom he expresses.
!00% truth as usual from the excellent Dr Cornel West.
@cornelwest for president, one of my favorite academics, speaker of truth, paid a high price for speaking the truth on zionist atrocities . Amandala!!
Right you are!
I applaud Cornel West for his insight and realism.
maybe the only person speaking the uncut truth and standing up for freedom and justice for all people.
Dr. West for president!
2bad
I have to get that book. Thank you Dr. West.
I agree totally.
Sad, but true!
This is absolutely true. so what has happened to change your mind, Cornell in 2016 election now that Bernie is gone? this is really disgusting distinction between this conversation and now. wow. people change.
Exactly!!!
"as long as you're scared, you're on the plantation."
Stalking has a specific legal definition. What GZ did was NOT stalking, legally.

Dr. Cornel West is an AMAZING & AWESOME man!!!!
Cornel West speaks the truth. Something that bothers those who don't have the mental capacity to reason an issue and come to a logical conclusion. He upsets the masses who pick a side and cheer their team on no matter what goes on behind the scenes.
Cornel is always spot on when it comes to the morality of this administration.
Agreed!
Good segment.
He makes a good point. It aint just about colour or culture. It's about totalitarian injustice.
Damn, Cornel West, thank you sir.
Just because they're not problems for you doesn't make them any less of a problem.
Cornell West is absolutely correct.
Agreed.
Yep.
Dr. Cornel West is an AWESOME & AMAZING man!!!! I LOVE DEMOCRACY NOW!!!!!!
Speaking truth to power, that's what Cornel West does!!!
i can't think of many people that would take that kind of disrespect and not at least get into an argument possibly get into a fight for something like that, trayvon acted like a good amount of us would.

The guy speaks the truth, its sad how someone would try to test his character. Oh yeah, they have none!
aamu/stand thank you mr west you are standing sir on truth please continue to stand thank:
Sad
Agreed, 100%.
He is right! So much for having a "Black" President.
This dude is awsome. He knows his hip hop too. Jay Z is a puppet for the bigger puppets of the few that run the whole show
Being followed doesn't give you the right to shoot someone. Only when attacked or some sort of altercation happens that you are allowed to shoot.
That shifting of the burden of proof is precisely why I don't like "Stand your ground" laws.

Justice was served, Zimmerman didn't do anything wrong.
Thanks for this comment!
This is one of the few people in this country that dares to speak the truth!
i fully agree with this interview he hit the pinacle of racism in america.
Love and respect to Mr.West!!! I hope he gives a speech to counteract O's speech on MLK Day. I read O is going to give a speech in the same place and time MLK gave his famous speech. And bells might be ringing across the country. Get the barf bags ready.
"On these decrepit shores............." That should tell you in a nut shell what someone feels about this country.
yep
You're right Brandon
I agree."It was a clear case of self defense."
" Mine is love of all people"
Your love is one of deception. As uttered in your book of deception:
“Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.” - Proverbs 3:31

No problem with the truth, just a problem on how to handle it.

I agree. There isn't a "new" jim crow, because the old jim never left.
This evil world we live in.
It's sort of hard to prove that when you can hold people without charging them with anything now, isn't it?
Glad you actually checked it out instead of just ignorantly dismissing it as "just blacks whining". Even though that was what you expected.
