    Nothing like curling up with a LonelyWolf video while playing TLD. I've probably watched this entire series twice now, something about it is just relaxing to have on in the background.

    A neat exploit of the map is creating your own compass. All you need is the spray can and some charcoal. Find a point that has level land. Mark an x there and map the area with charcoal. Proceed in 4 directions a few hundred meters or yards, marking different symbols that appear on the map. Check your map find the symbol the corresponds with the direction you need to go and go that direction.

    Some useful tips, especially for newer players. You didn't mention how bent/ broken trees often act as pointers to important features or at key junctions - although the only way to see what they point to is to go exploring anyway!

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  4 роки тому +5

      Bent and broken trees don't actually point to anything by design, if you do follow a direction based off of that and encounter a structure, it's by happenstance as the trees aren't directly pointing towards shelter on purpose.

    It would help if they implemented a compass into the game. You can’t check your directions when it’s overcast or a blizzard obviously

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  4 роки тому +1

      Even with a compass you'd still have to triangulate where you are... Map doesn't show your active position unless you've just mapped a section, so it would be kind of useless in that regard.

    • @tat2edsinner
      @tat2edsinner 4 роки тому +6

      Lonelywolf it would at least let you know your direction in blizzards and fog so if you know the general direction ie north west of you it would help a bit.

      There’s been a geomagnetic storm in they game it wouldn’t work even if you had one

    • @Alex-lc1bv
      @Alex-lc1bv 3 роки тому +6

      @@Crow.c But the magnetic storm only happens at certian times. When the aroura is happening and turning on all the lights, it would make sense that the compass would spin around or just point the wrong way. But under normal conditions it should work just fine.

      I thing a compass would be extreemly helpful for navigating

    Even with all the hours I've logged in TLD, I still picked up some good nuggets in this video.
    A navigation trick I've learned is you can use the mapping feature to get a fix on your location as long as it's daytime and not too foggy or a blizzard howling away, the game will open the map zoomed in and centred on your current location.
    Jotting down a map can also help identify natural resources and points of interest you may not have noticed yourself but that were within detection range of your character. Especially useful for spotting saplings which can be difficult to see among the trees in a heavily wooded area.

    I can see how you can get lost in real life real fast. I went off of my base and I could of sworn I made enough paint marks cause I seen another town around the way that looked lucrative. Boy that shit went sideways real fast, got lost for 3 hours in real life time and like 15 days on the game.

    FWIW, I use stones, like 6-8 of them to place them in the snow creating and arrow sign of where I should walk. Or an X of where to be careful

    Thanks for the tip about dropping a stick, that will help a ton. I had no clue anything like that was in the game, but that will certain make navigating so much easier, especially in blizzards at night (I get VERY lost in those).

    Your tutorial videos have been very entertaining to watch. I've been playing the Long Dark for a while now, but always makes me curious to see if maybe I can learn a new trick or two from your videos, mainly the suggestions you give to the tougher challenges.
    A very neat trick I got to learn too for those foggy days, assuming you don't mind carrying the extra weight, is to pick up every stone you see. Once you have a bunch of them, you can start dropping them every few meters, and make a path with them in places where you could easily get lost, for example the middle of Pleasant Valley where it's just plain open field, or across the ice in Forlorn Muskeg where all the scenery looks the same. So now there's a sudden blizzard or a thick fog that just came out of nowhere? No problem, just follow the path of stones you created and you should get back to base with no problem :)

    Small detail about that part where u was speaking about running blind into wolf or bear in a blizzard/fog.
    This is true but only for a fog. When you r out in a blizzard, you are olny living thing on a map as long as blizzard longs. No wildlife spawn during blizz.

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  4 роки тому +3

      Wildlife doesn't spawn during a blizzard, but if you have one close enough to you as the blizzard is starting it's still possible to have them not despawn but this is a very rare instance. Still don't want to be brash...

    If you have cans of spray paint you can paint arrows at key points and rotate them to set the exact direction. I paint them on trees when moving through a forest so you can see them from a distance. I think they eventually weather away so not a permanent solution. Thanks for some good tips though.

    • @Lonelywolfofficial

      I made this video before the navigation update came out. I'll probably end up going back and redoing now that the new tools are in the game.

  • @NeoRipshaft

    I mostly have learned to prepare for low visibility - I leave markers, usually 5 sticks in the shape of an arrow, that are placed in areas where it's extremely likely that I'll stumble across them or need them in low visibility conditions... like I'll always leave 1 stick immediately outside the door of a fishing shack, to direct me back to safety if there's zero visibility. Likewise I'll have arrows to and from stops on extended treks, like the route up Timberwolf.
    Now that there's painted markers I use them only in places where stick markers will not be possible or optimal... so like you can place arrows on walls, where you can't use sticks to do that, and this can be pretty damn handy... also arrows on trees are very useful, I have an up-facing arrow on trees to guide my path where applicable.
    It's silly and unrealistic to have sufficient markers to cover you in blizzards under all or even most conditions - but you don't need it - you can be certain that if you begin walking in any direction that you will reach a terrain feature, and by following the outline of that terrain feature, you will be able to find a landmark or other useful terrain feature (like a road or cliff). In situations where this seems to not be the case, THEN you simply need to identify these and put markers there. This can take a bit to learn but... well so does everything in this game =D

    I usually collect rocks and mark the path backwards where I was before with an arrow and next to it with some kind of symbol which let me know my position and the location I attempt to leave or at least I use the Hansel & Gretel meta like drop a rock in every few meters just like Hansel and Gretel dropped small pieces of bread to know their way home.

    If you keep seeing footprints then no one's following you, you're walking in circles check your heading in the right direction using the map pick a landmark and head towards it don't get distracted and go wandering unless the distraction has teeth or a high calorie value.
