- Here's a test of a JVC GR-AX280 VHS-C camcorder. Made in Japan. This is a typical low end consumer grade camera from 1998. Quite a nice camera overall. Has a good quality tape transport and functionality but suffers from a mediocre CCD image sensor that slightly lacks resolution and color accuracy.
Captured to MPEG2 @ 8500Kb/s with Honestech VHS to DVD 7.0 and a Pinnacle Dazzle DVC-100. Edited with Avidemux, no re-encoding. - Наука та технологія
Detail on the first medium/close indoor shots looked worlds sharper than the outdoor shots. I kinda like the smeary, less than real, artifacted look of these old analog creatures.
The video quality definitely has a 1980's look to it. You live in a nice area.
Bought one thanks to this video! Thank you so much man!
Very nice test video, thanks for sharing. I am looking to buy a VHS recorder and I'm new to all of this. I'm very excited to get my hands on analog equipment!
+streetmuggedbypolice Oh I appreciate your response. Though, I did manage to purchase a similar VHS-C camera. Thanks though!
Teamsesh feel
Buying one right now
I like the colours that this camera is capable of very much!

Got it in a flea market for only 2 Euros! =)
Thanks for sharing.

Hey Sam I purchased a jvc gr-axm230u and the playback on it (on the cameras playback) is all fuzzy and strobey. Is this something wrong with the playback on the camera or is what I have recorded actually that and I have a bigger problem....
Just bought one of these thanks to this very video! Great piece of kit, just a quick question, the image I see through the viewfinder is black and white, is this correct, or should I see a colour preview? Can I be certain that my camera is indeed shooting in colour as in the vid above?
Yes that's correct, this camera has has a older style b/w CRT viewfinder. Records in colour, more upper end models had colour LCD viewfinders.
any chance you know where to get tapes for it?
The few I have are from ebay and car boot sales.
wrong one i meant this cam the 280 is what i have been looking for !!!
How did you convert this to digital video? Please help, I have a VHSC GR-AX220 Camcorder and I have absolutely no idea how to get the video from the tape to the computer !
You will need a video capture device. Like a Honestech Vidbox, EZCAP or Pinnacle dazzle.
@@samthornley Which one did you use for this?
how would you upload it to a computer ?
KILL LEEK capture card
Hey I just purchased one of these and need some help with it. The camera is only recording in black and white and I can't figure out how to change it to colour. HELP PLS
Hey, it should be recording in colour. They eye piece view finder in b/w. ? Is it in colour on the video out put on the tv?
They record in black and white, the video will be in colour when you play it back
What did you import with? My Video2PC Ion video converter is horrible and interlaces bad.
I used Dazzle dvc-100 usb on windows 7 64bit pc.
I have one of them batteries don't work and no tape were to buy them pleas reply
New batteries and new old stock tapes are available on ebay.
thanx
Hiya! I just bought this exact camera and I was just wondering what tapes you’re using? I know next to nothing about cameras and I don’t wanna get the wrong one- I can’t find the answer anywhere :(
I used normal VHS-C tapes. They don't make them anymore but you can find them new and used on eBay. There's one pictured at the very start of the video.
Better than a lot of actual smartphone =D Needs just more color and contrast!
Is there any chance of capturing the footage on a higher resolution?
Not really. I captured this at 720x576 standard definition PAL. You can capture the video directly from the video output without recording to the tape. Gives you more picture definition but you won't get the low resolution VHS look.
Thanks for that, man. I can't help but wonder if there is a way. 720 ain't bad though. With a little cleaning and touch ups, you could get something really sharp out of it.
No Problem, UA-cams re-encoding and compression has effected the quality a fair bit. The original mepg2 file I uploaded looks much better.
Thornley Retro That's very interesting. Hopefully something will improve in the future. The quality you uploaded is surprisingly a lot sharper than what I'm getting. I have to capture my video just using VLC Player. I'm debating about getting a VHS-DVD burner, but I'm worried about interlacing on the video.
You shouldn't get any interlacing artifacts from a vhs to dvd burner. The mpeg2 vob files they produce will be interlaced but you can play them in VLC with de-interlacing on. I have experimented with this myself with a Sony recorder I used to own. I think UA-cam de-interlaces certain mpeg2/vob files. Not 100% sure though.
I used honestech vhs to dvd 7.0 to capture this video, It de-interlaces the raw video and encodes the mpeg2 "on the fly" when you capture video. However the video quality varies because it relies heavily on the CPU, and can sometimes skips/drops frames (even did on my core i7 PC that I had at the time) I recently swapped over to capturing in DV format on a Canpus AVDC box, a much better quality format and an industry standard. Also DV is recognized by many video editors as an interlaced format and is easy to edit.
I want a vhs camcorder so dang bad but I hate there's no way to take pictures😭
I'm sure you'll acquire one some day. They're out there. As for taking pictures, well it's a video camera. But I suppose you could take screenshots of video frames?
thanks men
