  • In this video Michaela Jones describes Mary Richardson's attack on the Rokeby Venus at the National Gallery. Mary Richardson was a suffragette, a member of the Women's Social and Political Union, and this was an act of militant protest.

i wonder if it was a polite british euphemism when it was reported that the gallery attendant had to wait for the constable to arrive before intervening because they had “slipped on the newly polished floor”🤔

It's worth mentioning that Mary Richardson later joined British Union of Fascists and rose in its ranks.

... and left after a few months, never to return.

@@sussexwoman for two years , not a few months. Also became its leader in women’s section, not just a simple soldier.

I think it is correct that the label at the picture in the Museum doesn't commemorate the crazy Richardson's act, because destruction of any artworks for political reasons is unacceptable. This was a criminal act similar to Herostratus' destruction of the Temple of Artemis. Militant actions of the Women's Social and Political Union before WWI didn't bring anything positive they only damaged reputation of women's rights movement causing consternation and mockery even calling menatl health of actvists into question. Christabel Pankhurst's claim is nonsense. The Rokeby Venus is one of the most important and best known European artworks and almost everybody, knowing that Richardson tried to destroy it, would think that she was crazy and consider her act a stupid vandalism. If he finds more information about that lady, he will only be confirmed in that opinion...
    Mary Richardson quotes:
“It was highly prized for its worth in cash…the fact that I disliked the painting would make it easier for me to do what was in my mind”
"I went and hit the painting. The first hit only broke the glass it was so thick, and then extraordinarily instead of seizing me, which he could have quite easily, because I was only a couple of yards from him. He connected the falling glass with the fanlight above our heads and walked round in a circle looking up at the fanlights which gave me time to get five lovely shots in…"

I don't think the painting was behind glass in 1914. Judging from the photos of the damage, Mary Richardson used her meat clear directly on the canvas. The protective glass must have been put there after the attack.

Hey, let's get something right here. Destroying this painting did NOT help women get the vote. Destroying art is depraved and senseless. Art destroyers should be sent to a Columbian all men's jail and never let out.

Guess the paiting gave a impression of a docile woman,to be always bound to the house or not to try for any parity with men,or being an career oriented ect independent woman-possibly the picture conveyed such a feeling to mary Richardson-my view in my view the breaking is justified to a degree.😢😇

Venus was a goddess, worshipped and venerated - suffragettes destroyed paintings, Uncle Adolf burned books. Same cultural vandalism!

There is no excuse for damaging purposefully a work of art whatever the cause may be. And please leave today's politics out of the commentaries that would be best. If you have a cause, however worthy it may be, don't look at art to damage it but to learn from it.
