Steve Swallow, notorious for straddling that area between bass groove and guitar lick. Often effortlessly. Always pushing the envelope. This is a superb example of same. The gentleman playing in this vid is naturally funky.
Just stumbled upon your channel and can’t believe you’re breaking down a j dilla track. I’m from Detroit and have friends that knew him and lived near his old house, so i feel a connection to his music and as a bass player this is right up my alley. I’m subscribing and hoping to see new content. Especially niche type tracks like this….
I love the format. Steve and JD are each amazing artists, breaking them both down a little the way you did, from a bass perspective, was just great. Thank you!
Woah this is awesome. Kind of a weird story but the other day I randomly had a video recommended to me about “whether an acoustic bass is worth buying” and in the video they talked about Steve swallow, I looked him up and the music was amazing and now today I get this video recommended and find out he was sampled by in my opinion the greatest producer of all time. Super cool
Hell yea been looking for someone that does dilla basslines he has some of the best basslines in hip hop history thank you going to learn this on my bass now!
Just discovered your channel recently after coming across Dr John's stealin, done a deep dive and love your content, great bass line sample, keep it niche;)
QTip stated that he believes the bassline for 1994's "Crooklyn", by Crooklyn Dodgers, was sampled from a Steve Swallow song. But he doesn't remember which one. ua-cam.com/video/mtVVhIFpNC4/v-deo.html . Do you think you recognize from what Steve Swallow song that bassline might come from?

I love his album Real Book and his work on John Scofield’s En Route

Feels like an early Charlie Parker type line. Thanks for the breakdown.🙏🔥🙏
yeah this is pure bebop!
Great breakdown, also give Gary Burton's 'Times Square' a listen too - Swallow is amazing throughout.
