What a lovely town and tour! Thank you! It was interesting to see the clock shop. I come from a clock and watchmaking family who were repairers. A few generations of watch and clockmakers. It was lovely to be able to sell my dad’s huge amount of tools to a young guy looking to get into into it and carry on the tradition after they came into my possession. Cows….definitely wise not to walk through the field of them with their calves. I walked through a field near me a few months back. A few cows blocked the footpath so I had to leave the footpath (followed by the cows!!!) It looked like firm ground but it was actually a bog. I went knee deep in mud and gloop!! The cows circled me. I thought that was the end for me and that darkness would fall with me still stuck in the bog surrounded by the circle of cows. Somehow I hauled myself out and dripping in mud and gloop, managed to walk towards an exit where there was a gate. The cows followed me all the way and watched me as I exited the gate. Walking home was sooooo embarrassing dripping in mud, but I was so thankful to get out unscathed!!
Wow! Thank you! Fabulous comment Louise. Super interesting ⏰⌚⏱️ regarding your family's heritage and clocks. Good to know that your Dad's tools of trade have now been passed on to a future generation - I am sure they are still being put to good use. Yes, I saw the calves and bull sign and went on a different route! Thankfully, the ones that I saw later in the video were behind an electric fence. I had a similar bad (well, minus the mud!) experience to you with cows on a footpath. It was near to the National Trust property at Overbeck's near Salcombe in the South Hams, in South Devon. I had parked at East Soar and was walking back to my car. The cows completely blocked the stile and my exit route. It is indeed terrifying! But your experience sounds much worse! Glad you managed to get out OK. Hope you had a good day filming 🎥 today. I'm in Devon tomorrow 🙂. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul
Hello Paul - greetings from Poland That was a delightful walk through the town and down to the river. The walk alongside the river to the water park and back into the town was very nice. I was surprised how quiet eveything was bearing in mind it was May Bank Holiday. I was worried that you may have put yourself outside your comfort zone, picking a town walk but you were great. Wonderful camera work, brilliant commentary explaining what we were looking at. Sorry to go on about it, but the still photographs were outstanding. Absolutley gorgeous. Thank you for producing such a superb and entertaining video.
Hello Michael, yes, I was (plesantly) surprised that it was quiet too for a BH! It is a town of much interest and beauty though. You are quite correct, I was out of my comfort zone, but, I did feel fairly relaxed here. Thank you for your kind comments about my photography - I do try really hard to make that a high point of my videos - I think that if the rest is rubbish, the photos may hold the video together! Thanks again, Cheers, Paul
I'm so glad you had a good visit to Fairford, and thank you so much for your lovely town tour. I'm especially glad you noticed and appreciated our 'no mow May' scaremow out in the churchyard! I'm the vicar of St Mary's church, and I notice that you said you'd be interested in doing a dedicated tour of the church, but haven't posted it yet! On the off-chance that you're still intending to return to visit and tour the church, do drop me a line. I'd be delighted to welcome you and show you around a little!
Thank you - and lovely to hear from you! I did stop by when I was filming in Lechlade recently, but the church was closed then too. I know it must be difficult keeping the church open. I can't remember if I mentioned it in the video but my mum used to go to Coln House School in the 1950s and my uncle helped to restore a couple of the pieces of stained glass in the church in the 1970s. Yes, I would love to have a tour around inside. I have found your email from the parish church website, and I will contact you from there. Thanks again! Paul
Very interesting, Paul. I’ve visited Fairford many times and walked around - but not along the river path to the lakes. It looks a nice walk. I may follow that next time I’m there. Thank you.
Thank you Ian. Yes, those paths all around the town are well worth exploring as is the walk I did in the previous video to Quenington too. They are all level and over good terrain. The town paths are now all accessible too - which is great news 🙂♿ 🚼There are some good signs telling you about it and points of interest as you go. The best access points are Well Lane and Waterloo Lane, both a short walk from the (free) car park. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🙂 Paul
Hi Paul, great tour of this lovely town 😊 it looked very interesting. Nice to see a clockmaker in the town too, I do like a lovely clock 🕰 many of my ancestors were clock and watchmakers for more then 400 years, so I have a big interest in horology. St Mary’s looked lovely too, I look forward to when you do a video on that 😊 great video buddy
Thank you Stephen and Yhana! Yes, clockmaking is a underrated trade. Hopefully, the church video will land in a month or so. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul
Thank you Jay! Sorry to hear of your recent health issues. Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching and commenting. I will be doing another ( in depth ) video of the church and churchyard here at a later date. Take care, Paul 🙂👍
My mum worked in the Coln Gallery and I used to dj in the community centre near the church.. in fact the dj decks faced the window looking at the front of church... the alleyway croft lane was our walk to primary school in the 80s. Friday nights was fairly busy especially summer time as youth club was at its peak. We used to live near farms at top of Mill lane.. wreath of roses was filmed in Fairford too. 👍 the library and new builds were primary school. Also plough pub was first time I had the then new dry roasted peanuts and a shandy... was about 14. 😆
Thank you! Some great memories there. My mum went to school in Fairford when the Americans first arrived at the base. She remembers them walking through the town and in the shops. Yes, as well as 'A Wreath of Roses' (with the excellent Trevor Eve) many Doctor Who episodes were filmed nearby, including Hatherop, Whelford and Kempsford as well as RAF Fairford too. It remains a lovely unspoilt town. Cheers, Paul
@@westcountrywanderings yes we had few Americans jogging past our houses near coronation Street (yes we had one)... thats when they would give us hubba bubba 🫧 gum 😆 obviously accepting sweets was different if you in countryside and American soldier and was 1980 something 😆
There was a small electrical shop on right at the bottom with a butcher next door, I bought an alarm clock There to get me up for breakfast before going to the section I worked at.

Hello Richard! Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the walk. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🙂 Cheers Paul
What a delightful walk, how marvellous to have all that just outside the town.
Thank you Faith! Yes, Fairford is such a lovely, quiet Cotswold town with much of interest and character. Cheers, Paul.

Did the Fairford walks in 68 to 71 when I was stationed there.
