- Season 7, episode 25 ("All Good Things") of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Miles O'Brien: We'll all be burning the midnight oil on this one.
Data: That would be inadvicable.
Miles O'Brien: Excuse me?
Data: If you attempt to ignite a petroleum product on this ship at zero-hundred hours you will active the fire supression system which would seal off this entire compartment.
Miles O'Brien: That was just an expression.
Data: Expression of what?
Miles O'Brien: A figure of speech. I was trying to tell him that we'd be working late.
Data: Ah. Then to burn the midnight oil implies late work.
Miles O'Brien: That's right.
Data: Hm. I am curious, what is the etymology of that idiom?
Miles O'Brian: Hm?
Data: How did it come to be used in contemporary language?
Miles O'Brian: I-I don't know, sir.
Jean-Luc Picard: Commander Data, welcome on board. It's so very good to see you.
Data: It is good to see you too, sir.
Jean-Luc Picard: I could use your help with the infuser array.
Data: Certainly.
Jean-Luc Picard: As you can see we are having problems with the plasma conduits.
Data: This will need a completely new field induction sub-processor. It appears we will be required to ignite the midnight petroleum, sir.
Beverly Crusher: Jean-Luc, what's going on?

The hilarious part is for some reason the way he just walks by as he says it.
Picard's face at the end slays me every time.
Data is so precious here ! 😂😢😊
Don't ignore the fact that he can determine the exact problem just by listening to the sound of it when he taps.
It's the intermittent blinking and sound that shows the malfunction and he taps it like we would something that is not working properly
@@AmpleVagina I believe he makes a full evaluation and diagnosis based on the sound it makes
The way Picard looks at data here when he first sees him gives me Goosebumps! you can see right there that he cares so much for him.. which brings that extra meaning to how close data was with Picard in Star Trek Picard.
ACTING!
They weren't really close in the show, though. That's kind of a retcon by the writers of Picard; none of whom had watched TNG.
@@halwakka504I would have to disagree, it's very clearly seen throughout the series This scene alone is in the series finale of TNG so it could not have been retconned in Picard. Especially season 1 of Picard and the years since Data's death in Nemesis
@@_ThEoZiAn_There was very little interaction between Data and Picard of a personal, friendly nature, not on the level that was indicated in Picard. He shows annoyance way more often than fondness in the series. In Nemesis Data didn't sacrifice himself to save Picard, he did it to save the entire crew. Geordi, on the other hand, likely had that bond with Data (check out the scene in The Most Toys where he argues with Picard about whether or not Data's actually dead, something he never does). Yar might have too, if Crosby had elected to stay on.
Picard refers to Data as Commander but he has 1 full rank pip and 1 hollow one, making him a lieutenant J.G.
Haha that always drove me nuts!
"That would be inadvisable," Data said threateningly.
"Excuse me?" Miles O'Brien inquired calmly.
He seemed pretty angry
@@katakurifan5213 it's a joke. Like the Dumbledore book/movie comparison meme
One of TNG's FINEST episodes. Marred by Data having the WRONG rank on his collar! He was Lt.Commander not Lieutant (J.G), ever
Yes, it's been a few years, but I think there was a similar mess up with Tuvok's rank in Voyager in quite a few episodes.
rxueloenz Well Voyager ran for about 3 years too long. But that was a real let down on TNG. Superb story. Its only flaw that I noticed
It's not a production mistake. Data looks at the captain with a confused and bewildered expression because the captain referred to him by the wrong rank. Note the episode. The captain is from the future.
@@JGoldx, Data was a Lt Commander in the first through to the last episode. It's a whopping mistake.
@@GGGritzer You are correct about his rank. Thanks for making me read his bio. :)
The Borg Queen ignites the midnight petroleum ! :)
Data's rank is different because this was when he first arrived on the Enterprise. I don't believe this is taking place in the pilot episode, so perhaps he advanced quickly during his time onboard leading to Farpoint?
Is this scene a slightly different reenactment, of a previous episode? This scene is supposed to take place in the pilot show, right?
There's no such thing as zero-hundred hours.
No such thing in 2023. Could be a thing in the future!
@@emperorwang0861 Zero hours can't exist, because it would be infinitely small.
@@BedsitBob lol good joke
@@BedsitBobI don’t understand your reasoning, clocks never say 2400 they say 0000.
@@BedsitBobZero hours might be infinitely small but zero hundred is like a hundred times bigger.
How _did_ it come to be used in contemporary language?
:D
