    Stunning Maigh Eo. As someone doing their camps across the water it's hard to fathom having that space to yourself, one other couple and some deer. In those conditions too.

      Cheers👍 I am still a little surprised when I don't meet another person on my hikes in these areas (over 2 days at a weekend) though I am that used to it now that it is also a surprise to actually meet someone😊 There are definitely busy spots in the mountains here though plenty of opportunity to find solitude👍

    A very good chance those people camping at the lake were inspired by your videos! Like you said it’s just so rare to see anyone else camping out in the wild - we’re lucky that it’s nearly a novelty (yet a bit of a disappointment) to see anyone else! The alternative camp spot looked pretty close to perfection anyway!! 🤗 It must have been so lovely to walk in that wilderness with such lovely light and sunshine…gorgeous 😎 A fab trip out Gerry!

      Miriam, it was cool that other people got to experience an amazing night at Scardun Loughs not far from me, though I wouldn't have known they were there and I am sure they didn't know I was there. I continue to be amazed that I can walk for 2 days on a weekend in the Irish Mountains and not see another person. I was also amazed that there were no midges at the lough despite it being flat calm, though no complaints whatsoever😊

    Another completely magical video that really captures the feel of isolation in the Nephin Begs, Gerry. Amazing mountain and lough (and blanket bog expanse) images throughout. I especially like at about 24 minutes with that look back across to Nephin Beg, Glennamong and Corranabinnia beyond....and I think Birreencorragh off to the left of screen. Wonderful panorama that would make a fabulous print on the wall ! Yes, dehydration is something I learned about the hard way when I climbed Slieve Carr on a warm and still early September day. I reached the top and suddenly pulled up as if I had pulled a hamstring or something. Anyway..I made sure not to panic and took a huge slug of water and just slowly manipulated the leg a few times and sure enough the symptoms disappeared after a couple of minutes. Not the sort of place you want to find yourself seriously impaired for walking, being about the most remote spot in Ireland!! I was very relieved, I can tell you. Just shows though how important it is to rehydrate regularly, especially in the heat. And it was a killer ascent from the north- as I am sure you know. On the solitude thing, I was amazed you encountered other campers, as I had five whole days between Ballycroy National Park and the Bluestacks last September without encountering another sinner. Now that is splendid isolation in my book....

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  6 місяців тому +1

      It sounds like you have good experience of some of these magical places in the far west of Ireland that can get into your system and not let go - dragging you back time and again😊 I love that vastness of mountain and bog in the Nephin Begs and that I mostly have it all to myself when I am there. I literally couldn't believe that there were other people at the lough where I had intended to camp as it is so rare to see other people in around there, all worked out well though😊 i don't think there is an easy way to reach that long top of Slieve Carr no matter the direction though it is well worth the effort for the extensive views. Sounds like your leg might have cramped up - something I have had the painful experience of in the past - caused by dehydration and loss of minerals (I have taken to adding berocca type tablets to my water). Keep on exploring and experiencing that splendid isolation👍

    Hi Gerry. Excellent footage of a truly wild place. Glad you got good clear weather for your trip. Its a tough enough climb up Slieve Carr from the loughs, especially first thing in the morning. A very enjoyable watch. All the best 👍

      @gerrymcveigh  6 місяців тому +1

      Cheers Andrew👍 A place I am happy to revisit regularly due to that feeling of remoteness and good weather is always a bonus anywhere in the west of Ireland☀ It is good to see some rewilding with areas fenced off from deer after clear fell of commercial forestry allowing the land the space to naturally regenerate with native trees. It was a tough climb up Slieve Carr in the morning though more than worth it for the glorious views😊

    Awesome hiking and a perfect camp spot Gerry! I’d love to be out there with such a clear sky, watching the moon and the stars! The only time I’ve slept out without a tent is in our backyard! It was fun, I’ll have to try a bivy one day. Beautiful mountains and nature and no midges too, that was a real treat. Glad to see you checked out the new lake, the water sure did look fresh. 👌 😄☀☀ - Jen

    Brilliant trip. Loved the sheep scratching itself on the rock. Belter! Haha. The bogland looks majestic, to be honest. It's such a recognisable feature of Irish countryside. The campers nicking your spot! And I agree, the etiquette is a bit confusing. As long as you're not hearing them breathing and they don't hear you breathing I think you're grand to share the beach. Btw, Gerry, I bought a paria breeze mesh bivy with their tarp (Sanctuary Siltarp)-take a look and UA-cam some videos of people using it. On a good evening you can sleep without the tarp and have a view of the night bug free.
    You're such a great narrator! Always producing great quality content, Gerry. Makes me want to get out.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  6 місяців тому

      Cheers👍 All that bog is mind blowing and it wasn't that long ago that they were digging it up to burn in a power station down there - changed times where the value of it is better understood. I don't think I could have shared that beach, just not my thing to be near others when wild camping. It was cool though that we both had a bit of beach and got to enjoy what was a stunning night in the mountains. The mesh bivy looks interesting as a way of having sight without the midges instead of being enclosed in a tent. Appreciate the feedback👍

It also allows for that change of plan to maybe explore somewhere a wee bit further.
