  • Nothing like the feeling of sinking in a boat offshore but at least I know my Deep Drop Chicken Rigs work! Support the channel and get some:
    southfloridafi...
    In this fishing catch and cook episode on the South Florida Fishing Channel we go deep dropping at the islamorada humps and catch some great fish, but the weather quickly shifts and we decide to head back to land.
    The wind and waves pick up, but nothing I haven't been in before. We hit a wave and hear the transom crack. The fiberglass at the top bolts of the engine is almost completely ripped off and the bottom bolts are cracked through and water starts to pour into the bilge.
    At this point we are officially sinking 10 miles offshore with land not in sight. The only thing I see is Molasses reef tower, tiny off in the distance. On top of that boat sinking issue, the sun is almost down and it's going to be dark. Not a good time to sink...
    This is a scary fishing catch n cook. But at least it's a fishing catch and cook. If the boat would have sank there would be no catch and cook.

    If you were in this same situation where you feel your boat is sinking offshore and there is no one around what would you do?
    Huge thanks to the coast guard for getting to my position so fast. It felt so much better knowing coast guard was in the sky looking for our boat if we would have sank offshore.
    Now I need to find someone to fix my transom and hopefully I will never have boat sinking in my youtube video title again. It is scary when you realize your boat is taking on water and sinking, but it important to stay focused and do what you have to so you can live to fish another day.
    Hope you enjoyed this offshore fishing catch and cook video. I will try my best to figure out more catch n cook videos for ya'll and i'll see you on the next fishing catch n cook episode!
    PS: I promise there will be no more boat sinking...
    PPS: I can't promise there won't be no more boat sinking videos

    This sure has been a rough year for me! Not sure when my boat will be functional again, but I'm digging deep into my creative brain to put out some super fun videos for ya'll including catching sharks from a paddleboard, blowing stuff up with the airgun and building some cool things. Thanks everyone for being part of the channel and if you know a mobile fiberglass guy down here shoot me an email! heiko@southfloridafishingchannel.com

      It is a good idea to get a epirb, though expensive they save lives and so if you dont have one get some. Might need to reinforce the hull once repaired inside the bilge with some steel beams or something.

    Glad you guys made it back. I had a similar experience but mine was just straight up my error. I hit the 17 mile mark in our old 1978 Bonito bow rider. Myself, two buddies, so accustomed to it that never in a million years did it dawn on any of us how dangerous things can get and how quickly. well, this particular 15 mile trip ended with a swamp motor, no boat, and my friends and I holding on to one another. We managed to get life jackets on, but one friends was about 5 times too small. No idea what the hell we would do, My mother had already called the Coast guard when a squall line had come thru which was why we were headed in. We lost our radio on the squall snd she freaked because she couldn't get us. So we floated from 7pm until about daybreak the next morning. It was far and above the scariest thing Ive ever been through. I am guilty as hell to this day for putting my friends in such dangerous situation. I own a Mako 171 with a Merc 90 behind it, today. I don't much leave the harbor these days. It changes a man I suppose, or at least it changed this one. Best of luck and be safe out there.
    Chas.

    I remember fishing out of Point Pleasant, NJ one year 28 miles out to the “Monster Ledge” for shark fishing on a 26’ Robalo! What we didn’t know while chumming, the bilge pump stopped working! I was in the cabin taking a nap and woke up stepping in water! I was like….. WTF! I went out on deck and told my buddy who’s the captains said there’s water inside the boat! I look at the transom and the water was flush to the deck and said….. “We’re taking on water!” I looked down in the water and a shark possibly a Great White or a huge Mako swim by and said…. “This is it! We’re going down!” Lucky the engines started and we were able to get in riding heavy and not able to plane out! That was a moment I’ll NEVER FORGET! You’re talking about scared!

    The back of that boat needs more than just fiberglass. You need to get that thing to a pro that can rebuild the whole back end of it with stainless steel and an Armstrong grade transom.

      Metal brackets on fiberglass just move the stress points.

    • @mumbols
      @mumbols 3 роки тому +6

      Aluminum and stainless will work with fiberglass. I make reinforcements for my uncles boat and his friends deep sea. You drill the stainless and or aluminum and lace the fiber in and out leaving tails. Then build the form around it. Stress point only moves when you don't brace bottom to top. You can build a square tube frame inside and then drill to the glass. Much more process but it works very well. You can do with wood frame then glass it over and lay fiber but has to be done right because bubbling in between will create a flex point that eventually will crack and fail. Did a lot of fiberglass repair and custom work for supporting lots of weight. Its all in the approach and how much you have to work with.

      Fiberglass is plenty strong. It just depends on how thick it is, what kind of core structure, the condition of the core, and the design.
      Edit: my current boat project is a full hull extension on a 1965 Bertram 25. It will end up looking like a bracket, but be for width, full flotation. The transom part will have a total of 16 layers of 17 oz. biaxial epoxy fiberglass and 2.25" thick Coosa board.

    • @gorchcleave5393

Put the boat back in the water (you'll be fine) Tow it to a reputable shop and have it fixed right. Good idea to put a bracket on. Your prob looking at 3-5k. Hey H, man i know that feeling! I had a boat that had a similar transom and when the wind was blowing and my boat would turn waves came in the back end! I dont like open transoms. I had someone strip it down and add marin plywood and close the transom while attaching the new transom to the old structure. Then I made an alumimum plate that covers the entire back and front of the transom so the inside portion is grabin more with more to grab all the way up to gunnels or the top of the boat. Then I used a bracket and then the engine. Your will boat will rung as if its i longer and it will give you speed. I didnt like that because of the exention it made the back heavy but it was Awesome! Good luck boss!

    Hey, tilt your engine all the way up to get the weight inboard, the bottom bolts should hold. Then put the boat back in the water and tow it to a ramp

      Never had a problem that you knew of over time and force of the motor they bottom of the bracket always starts digging in. Theres a reason why conch boats stopped making there 33ft and you see so many regulators on the market. Its law if physics in leverage

    • @mikelyons469

      A motor bracket would put more pressure on the transom. Remember Sir Isaac Newton? "Give me a lever long enough and I can lift the world."

    Heiko...if you have plywood encased in the transom it is FUBAR! That is major surgery to replace. If you do get it done you might want to consider an outdrive box / swim platform combo. I have see them on FMP boats in the past. You might just be better off getting a new hull for your pretty new outboard and tower to bolt onto. I have been where you were before and the words "PUCKER FACTOR" really start to have meaning! I truly wish you luck my friend. If you get a real fishing Jones head up.to Jax and I will take you out up here! Be well, stay healthy and good luck.

    I'm really sorry that you went through that but glad you guys are safe. That's a lot of stress! Couple of things that could be learning moments for everyone;
    1) you did not have a mayday situation. You had a Pan Pan situation. The difference is that mayday means assistance IS required (i.e., the bilge pump is not able to keep up and we know we cannot get to shore before we sink). Pan Pan means that you have a serious issue and may soon be in need of assistance but you may be able to recover the situation yourself. It's likely that the Coasties were able to determine the difference in your situation and reacted accordingly but using the correct language can help to make sure the right resources are devoted to assist (and correctly prioritized if they happen to be working other situations).
    2) If the guys that mounted that new outboard sunk that aluminum bolt plate that deep into your transom and didn't warn you that your transom was rotten - big shame on them. It's possible that it sank into the transom during that failure event but the caulking looks like it was set that way before. Either way, I have a feeling you will be better equipped to evaluate the condition of a transom in the future. This was avoidable if a quick proper and skilled evaluation was made from the outside of the transom.
    Again, REALLY glad it worked out well for you...and while it's not a small repair, it's definitely a reasonable repair. Good luck and can't wait to see you back on the water.

    Sorry about the boat, glad you returned safely with your fam. Not sure who sent those Maine lobsters but those beauty’s weren’t cheap. Try those Maine oysters with some good cocktail sauce if you are brave enough to try again. I’m heading to KL 1/1/21 from NH for my first Keys winter.
