Thank you for sharing this, Gia! We realized after filming this "making of" that we didn't figure in the time it took to storyboard it... It was definitely a fast and furious 20 hours! :D

This is great stuff. The look and feel of the film is almost as affecting as watching real actors. This is inspiring in its simplicity.

Thanks so much for both of these "Morning Call" videos! I'd decided over the summer I was going to virtually pair my upper level tech (designing) and acting students (writing/performing/filming) on a semester-long toy theatre film project, not knowing that your work would become the basis of our instruction and modeling! We all love it!

That's awesome, Rod! We're so honored to have influenced the curriculum! If it's okay with the students we would LOVE to see their final projects. Toy Theatre is such a perfect medium to be exploring during this time. Give our applause to your students and tell them to keep up the good work!

Thank you for sharing this, Joseph! Making short puppet films/toy theater is a great way for artists to create during this time. We look forward to hearing about how your students might apply some of these ideas!

I just have a question what are the different levels of writing puppet story-Storyframe, storyboard, sequential, scenes, scripting....
    Hope you answer it.

      Thanks so much!
The steps vary a bit depending on what the project is, but here's a pretty standard structure:
      1) Coming up with the core idea of the story. This should be as short and essentialized as possible. For "Morning Call" this might be something like, "A morning routine goes wrong." Then as you're writing the rest of the story you can always check back in with this idea and ask yourself if every step supports that idea.
      2) Write outline of the story. These can just be bullet points of actions.
      3) Decide what the best style of puppetry is for your story. This will depend on what happens in the story, what your characters need to do, etc.
      4) Sketch characters, sketch sets, decide on a unified look for the show.
      5) Storyboard story. Draw out specific shots to determine what you need to physically build, and get a list of angles that you're shooting from.
      6) Build puppets, sets, props, etc.
      7) Test puppets in camera. Lots of times a puppet will move differently in camera than you imagined. You can either change the puppet to move how you originally planned, or embrace the happenstance and alter the script to support this natural movement!
      8) Film shots, edit, etc.
This is simplified description of everything, but those are the main benchmarks. Hope this helps!
