That "black triangle" on the nose is anti-glare paint. You definitely don't want the sun blinding you on a bright day when you've got tens of thousands of tons of train behind you.

@@MysticRivers2 Again there is no DOT requirement for a car, trailer or container to be equipped with a placard holder. The regulation only states that when carrying a reportable quantity of a HM substance the placard must be displayed on all 4 sides. How many rail cars other than tank cars do you see with placard frames? Very few. Very few.

Legally, per DOT and CSA, you are required to provide a place to equip a placard. Coveres hoppers rarely have this, but they should
