Unlocking the New Testament Part 25 - James 1

  • David Pawson says that James is concerned with practical Christianity. James is not hugely on doctrine or belief, but on behaviour which is a vital dimension to Christianity. The keyword is ‘do’. David points out that ‘do’ is a keyword to the entire Bible. Though it is well written, James is not a structured book and David describes it as ‘pearls of wisdom that haven’t been strung.’ The author was the half-brother of Jesus. David reveals two nicknames used of James which give us an insight into his character. The letter was written to help Jews understand how to behave toward Gentiles.
David also has a book on this series find out more here: www.davidpawson.co.uk/search/...

29:37 "count it all joy..." faith just like muscles need to be stressed to get stronger. but it needs to be sustained. one can sustain doing something or being in something when he has a good (joyful) mind about it. all the wonderful hormones god gives us will be activated. we think better, we can do more, we can stay longer.

34:50 amen. this letter of james should have settled the issue of the false teaching of the ten lost tribes. the leadership of the assembly i used to attend could not answer when this was pointed out to them. and yet, they continue to teach it. on other non-scriptural teachings, it would just reply "but that is what the church teaches."

“If they [the brethren of the Lord] had been Mary’s sons and not those taken from Joseph’s former marriage, she would never have been given over in the moment of the passion [crucifixion] to the apostle John as his mother, the Lord saying to each, ‘Woman, behold your son,’ and to John, ‘Behold your mother’ [John 19:26-27), as he bequeathed filial love to a disciple as a consolation to the one desolate” (Commentary on Matthew 1:4 [A.D. 354]).

    • @LarrySanger
      @LarrySanger Рік тому

“Ghost writer” suggests something written with little editing or close direction by the person whose name is in the byline. Pawson’s theory here is rather that the letter was more or less dictated by James, and that it was given polish by his secretary, who was a better Greek stylist. Such a person would be better called a “secretary” or even an “editor” rather than “ghost writer,” who does the creative work *in place of* the supposed author. Important difference.

20:01 it is not feelings that guides a true believer in his walk in life. it is the correct understanding of what god commands him to do. feelings are deceptive, ephemiral. god's word is truth and eternal. a seared conscious would not feel guilt doing what god commands against. a person taught the wrong teachings will feel good even doing what is against the law of god (worshipping mary, for example).

19:36 it must be apprehended that the law of god has purpose: circumcision was the rite of an israeilte undergoes to be incorporated into the covenant god made with abraham. a little blood of the person is shed that seals that covenant. baptism is the rite a believer undergoes for his covenant with god. the blood of jesus is needed to seal this covenant.
note that: "20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood" is of the old testament scriptures.
so, the letter of the council was not about "judaism" nor "christianity" but of the authority of the word of god.

8:29 "...how education does not open the bible to you." this should not be amazing. education is of finite mind. scriptures is of infinite mind. yes, believers need the holy spirit to give him understanding of what god wants him to understand when god wants him to understand. note that david prays for god to give him understanding when he meditates on his word.

16:06 mary was filled with the holy spirit at pentecost as all baptized believers were. she may have also been given the gift of tongues. it must be apprehended that not all baptized were given the gift of tongues. these miraculous gifts were given at the will of the holy spirit as needed-to some the gift of prophecy, to another, interpretation; etc. note that the gift of tongues can only be practiced when there is another with the gift of interpretation. note that "tongues" is not gibberish. in the entire scriptures it refers to a foreign language "of all tongues and nations." what makes it miraculous is that it is a language unknown to the person. but it is perfect and can be understood by the person who speaks that language. the person given the gift of interpretation does not speak that language either confirms that this pronouncement is of god.

13:42 jesus was born on the first day of the feast of tabernacles. it is the sabbath day of the entire seven-day feast. he was circumcised on the eighth day, a sabbath, scriptures designates as the last great day. eighth is the number of new beginnings. jesus shed a little blood that seals his covenant with god as an israelite. this is a picture of his shedding his blood at the cross to seal the covenant with god for all those who accept god's offer of redemption: jesus' life instead of our own.

    Origen
“The Book [the Protoevangelium] of James [records] that the brethren of Jesus were sons of Joseph by a former wife, whom he married before Mary. Now those who say so wish to preserve the honor of Mary in virginity to the end, so that body of hers which was appointed to minister to the Word . . . might not know intercourse with a man after the Holy Spirit came into her and the power from on high overshadowed her. And I think it in harmony with reason that Jesus was the first fruit among men of the purity which consists in [perpetual] chastity, and Mary was among women. For it were not pious to ascribe to any other than to her the first fruit of virginity” (Commentary on Matthew 2:17 [A.D. 248]).

general comment. overall with interesting background information. but it must be noted: wrong teaching makes for wrong practice. our way of life needs to be founded on the teachings of jesus, not of teachings of men. that requires prayerful reading, studying, meditating and practicing what is learned.

There was no written "scripture" available during James' time-just the Torah. The Gospels were not even recorded by their various authors in James' time. "Scrupples? The issue was about following kosher laws, circumcision, and obeying Torah and the mitzvot. James was the most Jewish of early Christians and wrote about following the Law. Conscience and scruples are about observing the Torah and the mitzvot.

The New Testament was not written but the whole of the Hebrew Bible was written - not just the Torah
An important ancient book is the Talmud - The Talmud is the central text of Rabbinic Judaism and the primary source of Jewish religious law and Jewish theology.

@@DavidPawsonMinistry If you mean "the Hebrew Bible," which is called The Tenakh, it was not all written down by 33CE-the Torah was. The oral tradition was dominant for parts of it. There were many different versions of compiled books. The Talmud did not start until approximately 400 CE (Babylonia, e.g., the "Babylonian Talmud" and the "Jerusalem Talmud") and onwards through Rambam and Rashi, etc. Indeed, in Judaism, the Talmud still lives and breathes and is evolving today. Obviously, the 613 Mizvot and the "oral Torah" existed before Jesus was born and various version of what became the official Tanakh. The main thing about James is that he follows the Jewish notion that you pray directly to God (no intercessor) and follow the mitzvot and it is through works, not "grace" (as preached by Paul) that you live a blessed life in accordance with Hashem's Law. There is no "salvation" nor "hell". Those are Pauline ideas.. Doing good works in following Hashem and the Mitzvot (all 613 - although some are hard to keep today) is a Jewish idea. James, as the Jewish head of the "church" (or "synagogue" in Jerusalem since they were Jewish followers), espoused that classical Jewish idea. And it is why the Pauline Gospel looks down its eyes at James and the doctrine of works in favor of Paul's idea of "grace". Paul could get more recruits with Christianity, saying, "Poof, you are saved from Hell by grace, and you don't need to be circumcised."
See more on the history of The Tencht:
The authoritative form of the modern Hebrew Bible used in Rabbinic Judaism is the Masoretic Text (7th to 10th century CE), which consists of 24 books, divided into chapters and pesuqim (verses). The Hebrew Bible developed during the Second Temple Period, as the Jews decided which religious texts were of divine origin; the Masoretic Text, compiled by the Jewish scribes and scholars of the Early Middle Ages, comprises the Hebrew and Aramaic 24 books that they considered authoritative.[2] The Hellenized Greek-speaking Jews of Alexandria produced a Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible called "the Septuagint", that included books later identified as the Apocrypha, while the Samaritans produced their own edition of the Torah, the Samaritan Pentateuch. According to the Dutch-Israeli biblical scholar and linguist Emanuel Tov, professor of Bible Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, both of these ancient editions of the Hebrew Bible differ significantly from the medieval Masoretic Text

13:20. Of all the talks by David this is the hardest to listen to because he repeats the protest-ant heresy that Jesus had other brothers and sisters signifying that the Virgin Mary was not a Virgin. Mary was the most pure vessel without stain. God could never have used an impure vessel to house His perfect Son. I pray that David repented of this major heresy for the sake of his soul. We know that Mary was ever Virgin because the early Church Fathers knew this.

Mary had children after Jesus not sure what your point is. He is saying he doesn’t call her ‘Virgin Mary’ because she had children after Jesus with Joseph. Yes she was a virgin for Jesus’s conception. The bible states everyone will call her “Blessed” that’s it. No where does it say in the bible to call her Virgin Mary that part has been made up along the way.

Please read "Jesus' Words Only" by Douglas J. Del Tondo. He did what the Church of Ephesus did...put Paul on trial as an Apostle and booted Paul out of Asia because of it. It is believed that James wrote these epistles to refute Paul's false teachings. That is why James and Paul conflict and Martin Luther chose Paul over James! Not GOOD! James was an EYE WITNESS...remember EYE WITNESSES make something truth. So you have 11 EYE WITNESSES to one proclaimed Eye witness to Yeshua..to determine truth of the Gospel. James wins since ALL the apostles were with James except Paul.
Love Pastor Pawson and recommend his teachings to folks with the stipulation to avoid Paul's false teachings! Can't find any Pastor that teachings without Paul.

Endless Wonder, sorry, but to call Paul a false apostle is, at least, strange. Then you have to call the Acts false as well, but if they are false, then the gospel of Luke must also be and so on. 🤷‍♀️ I agree that we have to follow the words of Jesus, because He is the Word and His words are the real foundation of life. But Paul’s letters, James’ letter, etc. are allowed to be there by the same Jesus and the same Holly Spirit, who made the rest of the Bible. God is big enough to chose and control the content of His book. Therefore it is good and appropriate to build our doctrine on the Bible, instead on contemporary books. God has managed to put an amazing balance on all His revelations and teachings to us and the Bible + Holly Spirit is enough to guide us to the whole truth.
