- 📢 If you’ve been looking into getting a Bernedoodle lately, good for you! You probably ran into some strange letter and number combos at some point, like F1 or F2B. It actually refers to their generation, as well as if they are a purebred or a hybrid of some kind. It can be hard to decipher this information, which is why we are going to do it for you and break down how to read these coded messages...
👉 A Quick Overview
● F1B Bernedoodle: The F stands for Filial Hybrid. This implies that a Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog that comes from two different purebreds (Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle).
● F1B Bernedoodle: The number 1 means the generation of the Bernedoodle. An F1B Bernedoodle is the first generation of offspring.
● F1B Bernedoodle: The B represents the meaning of back cross. To back cross is an elegant term that merely means inbreeding back to a 100% Poodle generation. Breeders will almost always breed back to a 100% Poodle because they are allergy-friendly and don’t shed fur.
🐶 F1
An F1 Bernedoodle would be 50% Poodle and 50% Bernese Mountain Dog, and makes up the initial cross between two 100% pure animals. This is what most people picture when they imagine a Bernedoodle, but let me tell you why this may not be the best choice for some of you guys watching.
🐶 F1B
The F1B Bernedoodle is a cross in between an F1 Bernedoodle and one of the original purebred lines- either a 100% Standard Poodle or 100% Bernese Mountain Dog. Usually, F1B Bernedoodles are a cross between F1 Bernedoodles as well as 100% Poodles, as breeders favor dog coats that don't shed and are hypoallergenic.
🐶 F1BB
The F1BB Bernedoodle is 87.5% Poodle and only 12.5% Bernese Mountain Dog, making it much more poodle than Mountain dog. It is the result of a cross between an F1B Bernedoodle and also an original purebred 100% Poodle or 100% Bernese Mountain Dog, although almost always the breeder will go with the poodle in that case because of the hypoallergenic and non-shedding traits.
🐶 F2
The F2 Bernedoodle is once again split evenly between the Poodle Bernese Mountain Dog, and is our introduction to the second generation of Bernedoodle. This is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle and an F1 Bernedoodle, and the F2 generations produce specimens that are rather similar to the F1 generation, since they are the same percent of Bernese Mountain Dog as well as Poodle.
🐶 F2B
Next up is the F2B Bernedoodle generation, which is about 62.5% Poodle and close to 37.5% Bernese Mountain Dog. The F2B is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle, which remember is split 50/50, as well as an F1B Bernedoodle which boasts a 3 to 1 ratio between poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog.
🐶 F2BB
The F2BB Bernedoodle is about 81.25% Poodle and only a small 18.75% for the poor Bernese Mountain Dog. The F2BB Bernedoodle is a cross between an F2B Bernedoodle and a purebred 100% Poodle. This is the 2nd backcross with the Poodle and part of the 2nd generation, so it obtains a second “B” in its name, which is why it is described as an F2BB Bernedoodle.
🐶 F3
Usually, F3 Bernedoodles are bred with an F1B Bernedoodle and an additional F1B Bernedoodle. Additionally, you can breed an F3 Bernedoodle with an F2 Bernedoodle as well as another F2 Bernedoodle. F3 Bernedoodles have substantial Poodle genes, so it is fantastic for individuals with pet allergies.
🦴 F1B Bernedoodle (75% Poodle & 25% Bernese Mountain Dog)
🦴 F2B Bernedoodle (62.5% Poodle & 37.5% Bernese Mountain Dog)
🦴 F1BB Bernedoodle (87.5% Poodle & 12.5% Bernese Mountain Dog)

Man, the lack of love given to the F2 in this video is sad. It makes it sound like the F2's are accidents and undesirable. We have an F2 and he's incredible in every sense of the word.
Mines amazing also
Best video description of Bernedoodle please don’t ever take this video away it’s great learning tool im thinking of buy one please don’t ever take it down !!!
Thanks for the support!
We have an F1 mini Bernedoodle. She is about 1 1/2 years old and weighs 25 pounds. She is 100% non-shedding and an absolute delight. The sweetest and most lovable and loving dog ever!!
What color coat? We love mini Bernedoodles best they tend to have the best personalities. :)
She is black white and brown. Very Bernese markings. Just the sweetest, goofiest baby girl. We just love her!! ❤❤
That sounds like what I am looking for, size and all. Breeder recommendation?
Everywhere else I read says that f1b’s dont shed and the f1 does shed however both can be hyperallergentic.
Would you mind sharing your breeder? And do you often groom them? @curtturner8842?
I have an F1 Bernedoodle! He has a curly coat, and very living, goofy, and smart! Love him!! Doesn’t shed. Color is tri-color. Dad was a cream/choclate spotted standard poodle.
My mini Bernedoodle is an F1 - tri-color but instead of a black it’s merl, with a wavy coat. She has one blue eye and the other brown. She’s a delight, weighing in at 46 pounds.
Sounds like a super cute dood. 🐶
She seems amazing! Does she shed/ have hypoallergenic qualities?
I have a mini F1 bernedoodle. I actually found a breeder who had puppies at 4 months old so I was able to see their personalities and how his coat was coming in before selecting my puppy. I ended up with a very calm personality- resembling the Bernese mom and a wavy non shedding coat. Plus he’s perfectly tricolored. So happy I waited out the storm of bernesedoodle craze and got the perfect dog for my family.
Aww your Bernedoodle sounds amazing. 🐶
This video helps with what questions to ask. Thank you. I want a hiking buddy and I don’t want shedding
Thanks Kayla! It really means a lot to us.
@@WeLoveDoodles thank you!!
We got a Mini Bernedoodle 2 wks. ago. His name is Domino. He is pretty cool! He’s 2 1/2 months old.
My son asked if he could bring home a poodle. I said yes because we own a home. 108 pound's now and my families' best friend ever. St. Bern doodle is a truly kind and beautiful breed. He is just too big for small children. Nothing mean ever just clumsy.
She just has little “tumbleweeds” come off. Nothing like a shedding dog. 🐶 She ‘s the best little girl - never met a dog or person she didn’t like. ❤️
We got a couple of F1 puppies (sis and bro) a week ago, and we are very happy with them. They are 2.5 months old. It's interesting how different their personalities are. In one week we have noticed that the female puppy is more quiet and calmed, like a Saint Bernese Mountain Dog, while the male puppy is more energetic and willing to play, like a poodle.
Yes! Each dog will always have their own personality! Our dog is very timid while his brothers are more energetic.
You mean a Swiss Bermese Mountain doodle?
I just a got a brother and sister boy is Bernese looking and acting the girl is poodle through and through
I think I like the F1b Bernedoodle, but I also like they hybrid vigor of the F1. I don't have allergies to fur; however, I would love to have a non-shedding dog for cleanliness purposes.
I am picking up my F1B Petite Bernedoodle in 2 weeks. He’s 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese Mountain Dog. I’m really excited. I’ve been watching all your videos, very insightful!
How’s your Bernedoodle?! 😃
@@WeLoveDoodles he’s great. He just turned 7 months, very playful, loving and mischievous. He has two black eyes, so I named him Bandit 😊. I’m so happy I got him!
@@NiniEJ I would love to see some pictures of your baby. How big do you expect him to be?
@@daniellekroll820 Hi! I would drop his social media handles but I don’t think that’s allowed. He’s white with black spots, black ears and two black eyes. He had wavy hair before I started having him groomed, now it’s much more curlier. I don’t expect him to be over 20 lbs. He’s 10 months old now and 16 lbs…his dad was a Toy Poodle and his mom was a F1 Mini Bernedoodle, so he’s going to be a little guy. He gets mistaken for a Havanese a lot. I hope that helps!
My Bernedoodle is a F!BB and looks just like a poodle with a long tail that she carries like a big C over her back. Her coat is totally poodle in nature and does not shed. She is smart highly energetic. She acts like a poodle but her eyes look like a bernese...I love mine. She is 7 months old now and is a handful....but I don't regret getting her one bit....wonderful dogs....
im looking at getting an F2B bernedoodle for my first service dog
I have an f1b bernadoodle. LOVE her!
Yes, definitely one of the best generations. Bernedoodles are so gentle too, we love them.
I can’t WAIT until I can get my Bernedoodle. I have been patiently waiting for 6 years and I have to wait another 3/4 years.
I'm sure it will be the best dog in the world. We love Bernedoodles.
I’m curious, why do you have to wait so long? That’s a really really long time!
@@sophwaring5160 we are two of the same. I am as curious as they come. :)
I want the larger breed of a Bernedoodle. I love my home but it’s a shotgun home and not enough room for a big dog, also I have a decent yard but also not equipped for a large pup. And one more thing, as soon as I get a dog, I want to take it straight to obedience school. Which I know is going to cost me another 1,000 and some dollars. To me, the extra expense on top of having my dream furry-companion is worth it…but, In all, it’s a hefty expense that I’ll need to prepare and save for. :) I’ll get there! I want it too badly not to. 🌻✌️♥️
I hope you got one!
Extremely good information
Glad you liked it! 👍
Thanks so much for explaining the difference between the F1 and F2 etc.🐶
Thank you for the support 🙏
Just got a F2B. Darn most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. 10:01
We have 7 males Bernedoodles Standard F1, very intelligent dogs, they range in weight from 75 to 106 lbs, all of them have the same Father (standard Poodle 65 lbs). 7 different personalities. Different look, from one looking like a Mt Bernese with waive hair, another complete Jet Black wavy hair. A Phantom (Brown & Black) Curly hair, one Bi-Color (white & Black) curly hair, and 3 Tri-Colors (White,Black,Copper). Some of them are great hunters.l, others just like to relax. They enjoy being around us all the time. We take long hikes in one of the National Forest, which is located in the back if our ranch, where they run, explore, hunt, swim and protect their home from Other animals and big game. The pack is extremely active, making their bodies very muscular and strong. PS they are NOT neutered
Wow those are big Bernedoodles! I’m sure they are gorgeous!
Very helpful
Very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Great info!
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative! Can you tell me what the puppies would be considered if you bred an F2BB with an F1 bernedoodle.
This would just be called a multigenerational.
We just got a F1B Australian doodle 75 percent Bernese mountain dog 25 Percent poodle Mom was pure Bernese mountain dog dad was Burna doodle…..
We got an F1B yay!
Both of ours are crazy(6 and 7 month females) If I let them out like that I'd never get them back. They have brought so much happiness into our lives, we lost 2 old girls(A westie and Jack Russell beagle mix) within 2 months of each other last year, so our Bernedoodles were a God send. They love each other and love everything and everyone.
Ah! They are perfect capable of being trained since they are one of the smartest dog breeds. I agree with the loving everyone statement. Sorry for your loss of your other dogs.
We have a female 4 month old puppy that is our pride and joy. Her Parents, The male is a F1 Bernedoodle, her mother is a F1 Irish Setterdoodle.
They were not meant to hook up, but well you know. 🙂 Our Doodle is a try color with wavy coat and the sweetest dog we've ever had. But how does she
fit in? F1BB, F2 or not at all? We wouldn't trade her for ANYTHING, but when people ask we really don't know what to tell them. She is very Bernes Mountain
Dog in appearance and goofy like a Poodle, also quite shy. It would be great if you have an answer for us. Wonderful Video Thank you so much!!
This is called a double doodle since it’s a mix between two different doodle breeds. It’s not common to breed theses two, but I’m sure it’s an awesome puppy! Enjoy the puppy phase since it doesn’t last long. Doodles are the best puppies though.
My Berne doodles b-day is in twodays
They shed like crazy and mine is already 75% Poodle F1B
Bad luck or inexperienced breeder. F1b typically has a classic curly coat.
Nice video. What is a F1b reverse mini bernedoodle?
F1 Bernedoodle mixed with a 100% BMD. It’s a rare mix since more breeders won’t breed back to a BMD
love your channel! I was very interested in understanding how are the doodles being built... Also I wonder if they intend to establish those breeds or the idea is to keep backcrossing? I really liked how you explain the generation and loved to learn that the F2 is kinda cheated hehehehe. I have bred bengal cats for some time and it was very exciting the whole genetic part of a new breed. Now I just got a beautiful Wooly husky girl and started thinking about either try something to establish the variety or take part in some doodle breeding program that might be going on...Hope you make a video about Huskpoo (or whatever they call it) someday. Cheers from Brazil
Thank you so much for your support! Breeders typically like to backcross to a Poodle because they are more nonshedding and hypoallergenic. Huskypoos are pretty rare. Cheers from the USA.
The Petite/Mini teddy bear Bernadoodles
Those are the cutest. With tri color or tuxedo coat 🥰
My pick would be an F2B Bernedoodle. This is the only generation that retains the most Bernese Mountain Dog percentage and yet is still non-shedding and hypoallergenic. Let me know if I got this right. Also, what is the best size for an F2B excluding the largest size?
We also like the F2B Bernedoodle. The more generations that passes, the better breeders can predict coat and hypoallergenic factors better. We like mini Bernedoodles for those who like smaller breed dogs.
So what’s mine she’s half poodle and half mini Bernie doodle so what’s that ?
Which type of Bernedoodle will act more like a Bernese Mountain Dog and less like a Poodle? Thanks 9:48
This would be anything F1 or F2. You can also look for Reverse F1B or Reverse F2B backcrossed to a BMD.
How would the temperament of an F1BB be? I’m mostly looking for a calm and gentle companion for our family. We have many kids
I am looking for one that looks more like a BMD and less like a poodle but with non shedding coat. What generation would give me that?
F1, aka a 50/50 mix
Ours has a Bernese mother and standard poodle father and is basically a shaggier Bernese, and while she does shed she doesn’t shed like a traditional dog. Instead she will loose hair in cotton balls when she gets brushed or rubs herself on furniture.
In determining generation, how does the cream color impact classification?
Color, I.e. doesn’t have much to do with generation. Cream is a dominant genetic trait though so it should show up in the first generation of both offspring have it.
Just got a F1B known as a Australian Burna doodle mom was full Bernese mountain dog dad was a Burna doodle so 75 /25 I guess he’s going to have more of the Bernese mountain dog characteristics…..lol
Yes! It will definitely have more BMD characteristics! I’m sure they are adorable though!
Our puppy is a pyrendoodle (75%poodle 25%pyreneese and 100% Bernese Mountain Dog. Would she have a letter/number combo?
Parents are likely F1B. So it would be a F1BB.
It's quite rare thought to breed back to a 100% BMD.
We are talking to a breeder now pups will be a F3 so would they shed
It depends on the genetics of the parents. Some F3s will definitely shed though since they tend to only be 50% poodle
I'm in San Antonio looking for a reputable breeder. Any suggestions
We have an article on our website welovedoodles.com/goldendoodle-breeders-in-texas/
What if I have a bernedoodle who’s dad is a Bernese mountain dog and mom is bernedoodle
What generation Bernedoodle? If it’s an f1 Bernedoodle crossed with a BMD, then it would be a reverse F1B Bernedoodle. Some breeders will just say F1B Bernedoodle though.
Do you have any picture/video of a F1BB 62% Bernese 38% Poodle
This would be really rare. Most people don’t backcross to a BMD.
I have asthma, so would an f1bb or f3 be the better choice for allergies?
F3 are usually classified as multi-gen. It would be best for you to get a any type of BB and verify that the backcross is actually a Poodle and not backcrossed to a Bernese Mountain Dog. Hope that helps!
@@WeLoveDoodles thank you for your help. Fingers crossed 🤞I find one
Ours is an F2B
Our mini Goldendoodle is also an F2B. We love this generation!
So what would it be if an f1b berniedoodle and a f1b labradoodle had puppies what would they be classified as? F2b? F2bb?
In an untraditional sense it would be called a Double Doodle. The generation would be F2B but most people would say multi-gen which stands for multi-generation.
@@WeLoveDoodles thank you for the reply but I was informed of my puppies genetics before hand. We’re getting a puppy next week and her mom is an F1b bernedoodle (mom is mountain/dad is poodle) and her dad is a straight poodle. So what is it when an F1b and a Poodle have a puppy?
@@rastazorastra1772 if it’s a purebred Poodle it would have a straight coat, so that’s a little odd. Your dog would be an F1BB and 87.5% poodle if the information you told me is correct!
@@WeLoveDoodles yes I just met her parents today - mom is f1B bernedoodle with black/white coat and father is purebred poodle, all white pearl curly single coat.
@@WeLoveDoodles sorry I meant purebred poodle not straight coat poodle.
So are f2 bernedoodle bad?
No, not bad! It’s just not a guarantee of what you’re going to get since the genetics are 50% BMD and 50% Poodle. Usually people want more Poodle genetics because it’s nonshedding.
My F2 just had his 6mo b-day yesterday YAY Snoopy-poopie.
Congrats snoopy poopie. What a name. The puppy phase only lasts so long so definitely try to enjoy it!
