  • On February 14th, Air India finally confirmed a order for 470 aircraft - split between both Boeing and Airbus models. In today’s video, we examine why the Airbus A350 could be considered the true flagship of Air India, despite the 777X being a larger aircraft…

    I think one of the key points being missed here is that neither fleet type is acting as replacement for the venerable 777-300ER, and Air India is continuing to take on 777-200LRs from leases of former Delta Airlines aircraft. So I think there is a bigger picture element being missed here, we also don't know why Air India chose to only order 10 777X aircraft, and we will have to wait and see where it goes. However, I think it would be more accurate to look at the widebody fleet as a whole to be their flagship, as it's not just the plane you fly on, but the product and service offerings, and if Air India wants to build a positive brand identity, they will have to make sure of that market. Also to consider is the British Airways has a similar situation, where they've ordered the A350-1000 to replace older 777s, and the 777X to replace the 747, perhaps Air India has taken on a similar view to British Airways in this regard. Albeit, that Air India looks like it's keen to hold onto its existing 777 fleet. Especially since the 777-300ERs in its fleet are relatively young. Either way, it's going to be a very good day when we see these new aircraft in the Air India livery.

      B777 is there because pilot type rating is going on at Singapore & Toulouse since there are no flight simulators in India for A350 which will come eventually. Note that B777 are leases while A350s are outright purchase.

    • @josephaskins1996
      @josephaskins1996 Рік тому +5

      @Parimal , I will gladly note that the 777-200LRs are being leased, however, the airline is outright buying the 777X aircraft, already outright owns some 777-200LRs of their own, and they outright own their 777-300ERs. That being said, the A350 will likely cause the airline to phase out the 200LRs in 5-8 years once the majority of their 350s have arrived.

      @@josephaskins1996 Sir, what is your opinion about Air India's case ? I am confident about the TATA group but still im not sure whether Air India can successfully pull off both a full service and a low cost offering in the Indian market which is extremely price sensitive. I cant think of any other airline that has a full service and a low cost offering under the same brand name. And also, mergers have not proven to be good for airlines in india in the past.

    • @josephaskins1996
      @josephaskins1996 Рік тому +1

      @@sudhirlakshmanan I think Tata Group has proven it can run airlines, and that they are committed to reviving the brand they created. In fact, looking at Vistara, and what I've heard of it, the product offering and culture seem solid. I think you're right, providing full service while also having an extant low-cost interest is a bad idea, hence why I think they are merging Air Asia (India) into Air India, to consolidate their airlines into one brand and given that they've decided to go with the Air India branding, it tells me they're going to go for the full-service model in the mainline fleet, while using its main subsidiary in Air India Express to compete in the domestic market with the dominant IndiGo. I do think that they will have to carefully balance the price point of their flights with a good cabin product and good service at all points of contact with customers. And you're right, there are absolutely no Airlines in the world that run low-cost full service, bc the two are the antithesis of each other, full service carriers have attempted opening low cost subsidiaries in the past, but it has to be a distinct brand operating on the point to point model. I think the best option for Air India going forward will be operating Air India Express in a way that will minimize domestic-domestic connections while maintaining a good feeder network for international flights.

    It is great to have air crafts with different OEMs as it will reduce the dependency on a single company, Although the A-350 has its own benefits compared to the Dreamliners (787) there will be an emotional connect with the Boeing as they were in operation in earlier Air-India, But if Mr. Ratan Tata is saying so, there must be significant gains with the A-350s. All the best to the newly re-structured Air-India, we are waiting in anticipation to see Air-India as major player in the international market also.

    777X isn't even currently scheduled to begin deliveries to launch customer Qatar Airways until 2025, assuming the troubled aircraft doesn't suffer any additional delays or setbacks. I suspect that Air India's 777s will be right near the back of the queue of the 300+ orders on the books. This means that, with a current 777 production rate of 3/mth, India won't start receiving jets until the 2030s

    • @ashwinmuraliii

      Those 777s are kind of replacement orders for existing 77w fleet. With over 50 dreamliners, 40 350s, 19 777-300ER, there won't be any urgency for the aircrafts. AFAIK, 779 is for North American routes, the existing fleet which are going to be renovated at 400 million dollars can be used till 2030.

      You don't necessarily have to wait for the whole backlog to be cleared, before you receive your first aircraft even if you are last to order.

    Much is being made of this cockfighting between Airbus & Boeing. A dose of reality:
    The combined Air India & Vistara will be 25.1% owned by Singapore Airlines.
    Currently AI & Vistara operate 787s and current gen 777s. Singapore operates 787s and current gen 777s.
    AI ordered A350s and 777 9X. Singapore operates 61 A350s and has ordered 777X.
    AI operates A320 family & 737 family across its group. Singapore operates 737-800 and 737 MAX 8, Scoot (SQ budget) operate A320 family.
    This order is amazing for Indian aviation, don't get me wrong. However, the aircraft choices, in my opinion, were decided long ago, once SQ's involvement was finalized. For context, they currently own 49% of Vistara while Tata own 51%. Tata own 100% of Air India, Air Asia and Air India Express.
    None of this is surprising.

The A350 is only offered with the RR Trent. If the 350 had an option for GE they would have gone with that as it saves on maintenance, as well as training costs. In Addition, all Vistara jets also have GE/CFM engines as well if I am not mistaken. This way they will save hundreds of millions in maintenance costs, and only have a slight increase for new training, tooling, and maintenance programs for the RR Trent.

However, they need to ditch the cream/off-white colour and just use white. B787 engines have a different white than the fuselage, which has always bothered me. The cream makes the plane look 'dirty' especially when in India because of the pollution. Look at any photos with AI and Vistara next to each other.
