I ran through my marching a few times and took a few takes. I had about a day and a half to look over the audition etudes before I had to record the video. I got the music and materials for the audition on Friday afternoon, and uploaded it and sent it in on Sunday.
The greatest feeling of the summer was that Finals night. Really the whole week, but that day was just magical. Like I said, I don't want to get too mushy on here, so I can PM you more details you want. But August 11th will forever be one of the best moments of my life.
I don't know if you knew, but I graduated from WR in 2010 :) And thank you or the compliment on the show and on the tape. Haha. And I do. I can tell you here, or you can private message me on here or on FB.
I think I saw you, I was in the music for all camp you guys played with us for an encore I was the black kid with the mowhawk lol I started on the 40 yard line at the beggining
@chaosdude14 Hey, man., Thanks for your critique! My chops wren't the best that day, and the camera doesn't help it at all. But I completely understand what you're saying tone-wise. At Western Carolina, we play some great music and march some solid drill, but we've only recently been trying to darken our sound. In high school, my sound was pretty fat and dark, but being a non-major, I haven't spent enough time off of the marching field to care for my tone like I should.
Thank you! And distance isn't too important! We had people from Ooregon and Japan this year! But I understand money can be an issue. I saved for 3 years to be able to do this. If you want to audition, you should. If I can make it, you can! Haha.
@TheBalko371 Thank you, sir! And yeah, I'm going through a slight embouchure change so it's not quite up to where I want it to be, AKA where it was. Haha. But thank you for your feedback!
Yes. Tuition is $400 increments that you pay starting in December. If you want more information on cost, you can PM me. I'd be happy to share that information! :) And no problem asking. It was one of the best feelings I've ever had in my life. We knew, because of the way they give the award, that we had it won, but hearing our name called (in whatever order) for that award and the applause that followed made the whole summer worthwhile.
That's awesome! I had no idea! My friend used them to audition for Bluecoats and Blue Knights the year before, so I figured they would work well for Crown :)
Wow that's awesome that you got in! Do you think I could have some trumpet playing advice? Literally every time I am playing in front of people, my lips shake. I think its because of nerves. It doesn't happen in groups, only when I play solo. Sometimes my lips shake so bad that I can't get a single note out. Has this ever happened to you? And how do I fix it? The obvious solution is performing more, but I don't get chances to perform that often. Do you think there's another way? Thanks!
Thank you! And sure. I had the same problem. Even sometimes today, especially if it's the first time playing for someone (like Matt Harloff) I get nervous. It wasn't so much my lips as it was my hands, which may or may not be the case with you. Regardless, I could really attribute it to nerves, especially given what you said about it not happening once you get into an ensemble setting. And you hit the nail on the head, performing more. Given that I;m not a music major, I didn't have too many
We've never done anything like that. Plenty of times, we will have one section play, march, or play and march a section of the drill (once the season starts) or just music when in camps, and people will come up and critique you after the rep is over. I'm not sure if that's exactly what you're talking about, but it's the best equivalent I can think of. Haha.
I'm talking about when the band forms a block, and we do haists (turning in place) and sometimes marking time and doing flanks. Whoever makes mistakes has to fall out and watch from the side. I don't know if a lot of the terminology we use in our band is correct because we are pretty small (25 people) and we are pretty unofficial. So I don't know if other high school bands call it something else. In our band we call it a drill down.
@chaosdude14 a 55-45 or 60-40 weight distribution with the majority on the platforms. I guess on that day I was more worried about straightening my legs and rolling my feet rather than getting my weight correct, which just shows a few nerves I guess. And the last thing is yes, Crown does use Yamahas. Xenos to be exact, a big weight difference (to me) from my Yamaha Allegro. Haha. Again, thank you for your critiques and like I said, look for my visual assignments on here as well! Thanks! Jerry
Personally, I would record myself if I couldn't get someone to watch, and send it to them for them to critique. Aside from that, for me, the only way to conquer nerves is to face them. I got nervous in front of 250 people at a band concert, and I ended up, after 3 years, playing a solo version of the Star Spangled Banner for 7,000 at a football game. Seriously, once you get over little nerves in front of your friends or parents especially, then you'll be golden.
chances to perform either. What always got me was performing in front of peers, so find someone you're comfortable with and just ply for them, be it an audition piece, a solo you like, etc. Also, march too, if you can. If your tone is shaky when nervous standing still, this will only be magnified on the move. Trust me, I know. Haha. Aside from performing like this, there are plenty of ways to get feedback and have that kind of "performance quality" that could generate the same emotions.
will be golden, I believe they use custom yamahas over there at crown as well, so you'll have to get used to those horns but they are quite nice from what I hear (literally) and it should not be a problem over time
cool, what is the minimum range you have to get into a top corps? and i'm not talking about a lead solo or anything, just getting in. cause i'm in KY and looking into the cavaliers as a possibility in a couple years and i just wanna know what i'm looking at in the auditions
@chaosdude14 But I will definitely be trying to fix my tone between camps. I'll be uploading visual assignments and you can feel free to critique them as well. For your marching comments, I have had experience straight leg marching (although the only SERIOUS work I've had on it has been up at Western). Your critique on that is greatly appreciate as well! I never thought about moving my hips to correct my spine since we don't focus on that here, but I definitely will! And they want us at about
this is a old video so you may not be using this channel normally. i dont wanna be "that guy" but do you mind looking at something i played and giving me a good idea if i should even try out or not. you can be brutally honest , i can handle it. i just dont want to spend a bunch of money on camp fees and it not be worth it. any idea would be nice , thanks!!
@jewboy11505 Haha. But yes, I did get a call back of some sorts. They offered me a spot at the December Camp. They had 7 returning vets on lead and they only take 8. The trumpet line this year is going to be VERY good and was VERY competitive. But I was offered a spot and will be playing second trumpet this coming summer! :)
Oh, one more thing, they will likely want you to lean more forward in your posture, you want most of the weight to be on your platforms of your feet (the front portion where the ball is) rather than the centers of your feet
Like I said, feel free to just go out and get someone, say "Hey,. I want to play this for you." People with a musical mind are always willing to help. And if you want, you can record something you think you'd audition on for an ensemble or Crown even, send me the link and I can critique it, or me and my trumpet major friend (who marched Blue Knights) can look at it. We're always willing to help fellow trumpet players! I hope this helps! Let me know!
If it helps, right before it starts, the drum major will call us into parade rest, then say, "when I call you to attention, a real drill down will begin. Please fall out on your honor. All previous commands have been cancelled as you were." Yeah. Then the drill down starts, and whoever makes a mistake has to fall out and watch from the side.
@jewboy11505 Not really. Crown doesn't do callbacks. They either offer you a spot or tell you to work on somethings and to come back to the next camp, or to basically try a different corps. Haha. Matt Harloff called it the "Packers-Lions-Colts Rule." Haha. Packers = you're in, Lions = You're on the edge, so close, and Colts = A no, basically.
Um, I'd say a solid B to C above the staff. it all is very dependent upon how you move and ESPECIALLY how you march and play the same time. it doesn't matter if you can scream if you don't follow the technique and can't do it while on the move. BUt I'd say you'd need a solid range, A C above the staff is usually a safe bet.
pull your hips up, push your belly button back towards your spine so you will have a flat back (I guarantee they will be looking to correct that) I've marched 2 years at a world class corps very similar to carolina crown, using the same marching technique and brass technique/approach I believe they use straight leg technique which it appears you have experience with, and you appear to have natural marching ability which will give you and edge, work on your tone quality a little bit and you
Thank you! I can't wait for you to! It's an amazing experience!
I go to western too and I heard your audition went well, you're summer is going to be amazing!
AWWH HECK YEAH! Cant wait till i try out for A Drum Corp!
I ran through my marching a few times and took a few takes. I had about a day and a half to look over the audition etudes before I had to record the video. I got the music and materials for the audition on Friday afternoon, and uploaded it and sent it in on Sunday.
I miss that...I wanna audition this winter :)
Sure did. I had an amazing summer!
Both of those etudes have been part of All Region tryouts in Texas!

Nice work. This makes me wish I lived closer to carolina =p.
I think I saw you, I was in the music for all camp you guys played with us for an encore I was the black kid with the mowhawk lol I started on the 40 yard line at the beggining

@jamiemcdonaldisjamie Thank you! It did, I got offered! I'm really looking forward to it!

You probably won't ever see this, but are you marching Crown in 2013 this year? I heard you did in 2012
2nd etude you played is one of the three etudes for All Region this year!
We've never done anything like that. Plenty of times, we will have one section play, march, or play and march a section of the drill (once the season starts) or just music when in camps, and people will come up and critique you after the rep is over. That was an AMAZING show I saw at Nightbeat this year with WRHS. Great audition tape :D. Anyways, do you have any tips to increase my higher register?

Did your band not do flip steps when you turn?
Personally, I would record myself if I couldn't get someone to watch, and send it to them for them to critique. Aside from that, for me, the only way to conquer nerves is to face them. Yeah dude!
Did you make it?!?!?
The winter camp fees are separate from tuition right? And I just have to ask you, how did the best brass award feel?
Hello again, I have another question. Did you guys ever do drill downs? I'm just trying to figure out what I need to practice.
Howdy. Well, I'm not entirely sure what that means. Could you describe what you're talking about?
@chaosdude14 But I will definitely be trying to fix my tone between camps. I'll be uploading visual assignments and you can feel free to critique them as well. Well? Did you get a callback?
so you have to record it all in one day?
It's the video. Mac flips the picture.
did you make it??

how long did you practice all of this before making the video?

good luck sir
Sure did!
I'm using a Yamaha Allegro with a 1C mouthpiece in this video. Not a megatone, not bored out. It's just a stock a Giardinelli 1C.
do u know curtis huffman
Oh, one more thing, they will likely want you to lean more forward in your posture, you want most of the weight to be on your platforms of your feet (the front portion where the ball is) rather than the centers of your feet
ALso, there is a metronome, it didn't come across very well in the recording. SOrry about that!
Like I said, feel free to just go out and get someone, say "Hey,. I want to play this for you." People with a musical mind are always willing to help. o he is in the gold drumline

You don't have to. I didn't. I did marching one day, music one day.
of marching technique
I do not :(
It's faster and I guess more professional
trumpet@jerrygoodnght
What does that mean? Haha.
