Is This The Grand Tour Back Up Car? One For The Road

- Following our original investigation into the background of the 3 feature cars for the final Grand Tour adventure - One For The Road - we are back with a quick update on each car with other information that has come forward.
We also take a punt at the source of the back up car - a Rover SD1 - and come up with our most likely suspect. This was recorded before release of One For The Road so time will tell if we have got it right!

Gotta be the best back up car they’ve had
Very interesting as James may said he was not so interested in classic cars I guess he really liked the stag.
Plus its his last ever Grand Tour car.
The rover SD1 brings back memories as it use to be my fathers car. That exact one silver and the rust from when us kids damaged it and dented the door sadly.
In the episode the comment on how the Rover looks hastily repainted, which corroborates the quick colour change mentioned in the video
The auction house had a nerve, mentioning the £10k and the paint job in the same sentence.
Just watched, one for the road. . Really enjoyed it.
Think they gave us a great send off
There are now images of the Stagg and Capri outside the Smallest Cog. As for the Lancia, I'm assuming Jeremy kept it?
hammond had the lancia and ford outside the smallest cog on his insta, but jezza had the lancia outside his pub last night for the grand tour viewing party inside the grand tour tent
I wonder if James kept the Merc from the Botswana Special and Jeremy kept the Beta as well? Would be cool as a reminder of having their first special cars along with their last special cars, also reuniting the Merc and the Beta with the Kadett aka Oliver, lol
@@bradwhite5884 The Lancia and Merc are still in Botswana. There was a video about them a few years ago and they feature in the newest Grand Tour.
@@Sid3300 Yeah, I heard about that, but I would love if they finally brought them home after all these years to reunite with them and Oliver, so yeah
@@bradwhite5884 Exactly what I was hoping.
It's definitely not a comedy backup car, they all like the SD1, JC used a modified one in one of his DVD's against VBH in a Nova, Hammond did one of his first novice races in an SD1 as a tribute to the RV8, and James took the one in the studio linked to that segment for a quick drive, because his dad had one when he was younger.
Didn't JC fill one with water?
@@oscarsgarage447 I think it was Mays car on one of the old British Leyland challenges from the same time that Hammond used a Dolomite Sprint. They did fill it with water as a challenge stunt where a door fell off (staged)
@@oscarsgarage447 Yep, they did in the cheap leyland cars challenge. Apart from the comedy aspect, there seemed to be value aspect of in what cars could be resold, and the leyland cars weren't worth the potential liability to the BBC, so they were going to go to scrap at the end of the challenge, so they did the water challenge. I do think that somehow the dolomite got rebuilt into a touring car replica though.
@@chrismirams9272 No , no , May had a Princess in the British Leyland challenge , the SD1(with fell off door) was JC's car......I just re-watched the episode a few hours ago , so I'm super sure about that.
Oscar - all three cars are back in the UK!
They are currently being used for the press interviews by The Grand Tour!
You can see all three off to the right of the stage
Have you got a link to this?
@oscarsgarage447 I don't know how post links, but it's the first thing that comes up if you yt search "grand tour interview". He's right, all 3 cars are next to the stage.
Good update, could you do some of the cars top gear test drove back in the early 90’s, I remember clarkson did a review of the 348 when it was new and he drove it round London for the week, be cool to see what the history of the car ended up being.
Great suggestion!
Another good video 👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Not as polished as I would like it to be, but was a bit last minute!
The only backupcar ever they liked. And for good reason. Had a Vitesse for 17 year and i loved it (till i got bored with it after 17 years haha)
Love changing colour schemes
I’m just waiting for the smallest cog video about the stag
From their social media postings... I think its in the works.
I would of love if the back up car was a Marina before it get crushed by a piano like the old gag, but it was would imply that Wilman did that, so the Rover would be a back up of the back up car instead, would be a funny and to pay nod to such, lol
I thought it would be a good idea maybe for a new series for you to go through all of the old Top Gear cheap car challenge and special cars and see where they are now. I did do a bit of research and it does seem the majority have been scrapped but a few such as Hammond’s 924, Clarksons Alfa 75 and Mays Lamborghini Urraco have survived. Would be great to see you do this!
Apparently the Starion was saved as well. Hammond's 308 was saved too.
I'm in, let me see what I can find.
@@Snarl616 i saw a post on the starion recently by the current owner and it does seem that it is being restored
@@YegoYTP years ago there was a little video on youtube where it showed. I have no link, though.
It was indeed the Starion, but left with the white paint instead of red.
I refused to watch this until I've watched the final grand tour 😂 the sd1 was an under rated car that's for another good episode Trevor
yes all correct.. just watched the 2hr + on Plex download. The Hamster did say he sprayed the 3:0 GXL bonnet black to keep in with the 70' racing look.. The SD1 is the same as, but had been sprayed horrid bronze inc the antenna, backed up with some dodgy welding.....you will be surprised which car needed no maintenance whats so ever.
But it did have £53k spent on it... (see my previous video on it...)
@@oscarsgarage447 £53- from BnQ more like…
Hey Oscar, just wondering if you have been to Clevedon Cars and Coffee events? Next one tmrw 10am. Held monthly 2nd Sat of each month .Youd be most welcome
Hi Charlotte. Thanks for the invite, already committed to the West Huntspill show tomorrow. Maybe next month?
Clarkson is keeping the monte and restoring it,as people from the montecarlo consortium are saying
As mentioned in our original video on these cars. Its worth a watch.
I also would of love if Clarkson also kept the Lancia Beta from the Botswana special too tbh, have the two Lancia's together, lol
@@bradwhite5884Well, we know where those two cars ended up, and of course, OLIVER! It's sad that they couldn't get Oliver back over there to be reunited with the others, but at least it's still around at Hammond's workshop.
Surprised Clarkson did not grab it.
SD1 ❤
Good videos, cheers.
Glad you like them!
was the sd1 a manual or auto
It was an auto
The claim that the SDI had £10,0000 spent on it seems at odds to its subsequent MOT history…….
I hear you, but body repairs and paint ain't cheap as proved by my midget... but the welding they showed in the programme wasn't great 😲
Who cares what colour the rover was .. it made great tv .. and well worth watching
Cant see it tbh.. the back up cars are always something none of em would want for comedy purposes.. an sd1 just doesnt fit that mould.
Yes, all three of them like the SD1.
This one they go against type and choose the backup car themselves, they all agree they like it. You need to watch it to understand why.
@neildaniel8232 yeah. Watched it since commenting bud.. kind of a joke within the usual joke there..
@robdavies8702 remember Clarkson personal sd1? British racing green with gold wheels and cosworth style whale tail?
Who cares !!!!!!!
You obviously care enough to comment?
Don't watch the video if you don't care.
