The Ford Maverick and this vehicle show folks want vehicles like this. Since the Subaru's are built on their global platform, they need to bring back the Baja.
I'm actually shocked how Subaru has gone so radio silent on this segment. A segment they literally created decades ago
Car based utes were around before Subaru released the baja, and before that Subaru's own Brat. Remember the Ford Ranchero, and Chevrolet El Camino. Also Volkswagen sold a pickup version of the Rabbit in the 80's. But to Subaru's credit, their offerings were more off road focused/capable than this vehicle is. I think I saw a video on YT that indicated Subaru might be considering bringing the Baja back.
@@richardkusimenkah I would think of grandpas El Camino from a lot longer ago ... I wonder if subaru will wait to long to get on on the small truckelet gravy train ...
Very true
Car company with one of the best warranties, that no dealership will honor.
Bingo
I trust Kia/hyundai like I do Stellantis.
The problem is that in this segment , FORD isn’t a reliable option either. We seems to be screwed either way 😂
Not true
@@Cyberpunk2056 true to them. Not to you.
Love the background music in your vids Ryan. So chill and gives the viewer a comforting vibe. Keep em coming.
So Hyundai’s “off road” package is basically aesthetic, but with lower ground clearance than the non off road Sante Fe. Oh those crazy marketing execs 😄
Thanks for the review! I bought a 23’ SEL Premium and it’s been great as long as you understand what it is capable of handling. I appreciate that you got the silly XRT trim with the 18” wheels to show capability. Most reviewers only ever reviewed the Limited with larger wheels. I’m glad reviewers are finally addressing these sport and off-road packages that are nothing more than stickers and added weight without anything practical or useful. Speaking of the side steps, my previous truck was a loaded 11’ Ranger XLT and came with these steps and they were equally as useless. They did make it look cool or more like a big boy truck 😂
Excited for that eventual Ranger Raptor review!
Ryan your review was top notch as usual! It would be awesome to see this type of test on the NA 2.5 with standard tranny and AWD. Just curious how well the AWD on the non DCTs handles the trail. Thanks for another awesome video!
I just don't understand why car companies make these off-road trims, claim the vehicle is off-road ready, yet don't increase ground clearance/ approach angle/ include all-terrain tires.
It shouldn’t be that hard… right?
@@drivingsports the naturally aspirated version with the regular transmission without dct/dual glutch is better off road the all wheel drive system doesnt overheat as easy as the crappy dct.TFL STUDIOS had videos on it
It's because they use marketing to the average consumer to get them to think it can do all these things and it works. Especially because most people just want the look, so it's a good vehicle for them.
I mean subaru with the wilderness trims will increase ground clearance, at tires as standard and underbody protection with redesigned front and rear end for better approach angles which is.. drastically different from the other trims
They're not marketing to you. They're marketing to people who still don't want to leave the pavement, but want to look extra extra like they do.
Love the color, but I'd wait for the '25, the refreshed interior seems worth it to me.
Looks cool, but I would rather save thousands and grab a Maverick Tremor.
Hell yeah!!!
Ford must lose a fortune on those
🙄. Cars these days are so overpriced even if you factor in inflation. They are not losing any money
Just wish the Tremor had the 4k tow package
Hey Ryan, great video, thanks. Do you have any information indicating why they went with a DCT wet clutch on this trim/motor? What are they trying to achieve with that vs. a standard auto?
Love the style and I own a F150 FX4 , I would wait and get the 2025 XRT for sure
I think Hyundai was super smart for creating this model. Ford obviously showed that people want a smaller truck. A few things that bug me… the piano black just needs to go. Why do they (car companies) keep putting it in the interior. Second, I really can’t stand the gage cluster is rectangle behind a round steering wheel. So odd to me.
The DCT isn’t a great choice for off roading so it’s interesting they went with that for this trim but I guess with this money people want the more powerful engine.
Lastly a lot of people have mentioned this in the comments but the reliability would scare me to much. Yes they have a great warranty but I don’t want to have to rely on it.
Piano black looks great in a showroom to sucker you into buying it. They don't care that it looks like a Nasty, Scratched up, Dust, smudgy Mess, AFTER You Bought it! 😁 Dang bunch of punks doing that design move! People buying also need to look at design, construction and materials used and things and decide on how that would workout in the environment that whatever they are purchasing would be used in/ exposed to. People should be able to figure this out on their own and say...."nope, not buying this!" That would make BS like shiny black in a car's interior stop a lot faster. 😁
Or maybe car manufacturers should just start making interiors with all mostly shiny black plastic hard surfaces and the remainder of the interior be pure white 😁
Oh shoot now some idiots will actually start doing that 😅
Would you be able to get a Canadian model? We have terrain modes in Canada.
Snow mode for the win
The sidesteps are likely to give you better access to anything you might have on the roof racks?
The Baja we will never have 😂
I bought this vehicle yesterday and disagree with this reviewers negative opinions! I love the quietness and smooth driving of the Santa Cruz XRT. In my opinion, the Santa Cruz XRT is designed for those of us that want the feel and style of an SUV with some truck capabilities and not so much of the mud and off road pleasures. The 2025 model may come with updated technology, but I like the looks of the 2024 model.
Looks good. But still do not trust it for long term use.
Yep. My sentiments as well.
Good for you old folks that are brainwashed.
Interesting look but it isn't off road vehicle. Thans for testing it off road for us. Happy Easter. Greetings
Definitely not a Subaru
Yep, the head gasket remained intact.
@@easye47Well .... "true" ...BUT YOU ARE about "20 years or more" OUT OF DATE WITH THAT INFO. 🤣
These sidesteps might be a good protection for doors and side sills. Ofc it depends on how rigid their points of attachment are but steel tubes gonna eat impacts with rough terrain better then plastic cladding.
Those side steps are worthless on a car that "can't support the use of them" they lower the cars already low ground clearance down to "7.5 inches" Worthless. Like its drive train on a little bit of rough road! :😂😖
@@RRr-yl8zr At least they may save body panels from impacting boulders once, after which be removed.
Good review 👍
Glad i bought the Maverick.

Do the 2024 Santa Fe XRT please!!!
need this xrt for asian market..
Almost $42 grand for that huge disappointment? Good review! NO THANKS on this trucklet.
How about $35,500? Can't turndown a good deal.
Funny thing about the side steps. Yes they are dumb and my wife and I have to step over them, but I will say our toddler loves the step, so there's that, lol
If you're looking for a offroader hyundai probably isn't the first place you should look, subaru is the obvious first choice but this is a good start sinec jeep is flushing their reputation down the toilet
Not sure if it’s a new addition or not, but the inclusion of “centimetres” is much appreciated 😅
Cheers from across the border!
Isnt the Santa Cruz xrt just a Santa Fe trayback with side rails and plastic trim?
And! Lower ground clearance! 😅
Bring this to Australia 🇦🇺
SUBARU NEEDS TO BRING BACK THE BRAT! CHANGE MY MIND.
Well. I hoped he can wait until new 2025 XRT trim is available which comes with no side step.
Just like El Camino, this is a car for a parking lot in front of the beach and people going to surf.
Looks fine for maintained dirt roads, snow, and parking in muddy grass fields after a rainstorm. Pulling a boat off a slippery or rural boat launch, using forest roads, and using it on rough construction sites? Not so much.
Not a fan of $40K cars having plastic park bench interiors.
You must not be a fan of any cars then
@@dawsongranger4940 There are plenty of cars with good interiors for under $40K. Hyundai fan?
It looks like it is oriented around appearances. Not sure giving the vehicle a smart mode helps the vehicle.
KIA is like this as well. All style no substance.
But it's got extra cladding 😂
Can those side steps be removed fairly easily or what? Because I'd take them off.
They are stil going to charge you for them. :-)) Just by a different model. sounds like this one is the LEAST "off road worthy." Seems like you just buy them by the cheapest model with the engine size you want and put some better tires on them. That all that is going to make the difference between them off road.
Wow, it shut the engine off? Wild
Weak transmission plus crappy engine. Who would’ve thought? 😂
Well it’s a Hyundai DCT. No surprise to me. 😂
@@angelgjr1999 I doubt it actually has "anything to do with the engine" Mor like a problem with the Lame Dual Clutch Transmission and awd system. And it's so wimpy they just shut the whole thing down to protect the dual clutch transmissions. But either way the transmission isn't working and won't get you where you want to😅😖
18:58...Did better than the Honda Passport TrailSport 🤣
I agree though...pavement and wet/snowy roads only.
I was interested in this until you said the seats suck.....Thanks for the review.
You ever going to do a Rivian review?
Off-road ready xrt
I was between this and the crosstrek wilderness. Went with the crosstrek. No regrets here. (Except that its not a 2.4t baja)
What’s your overall mpg been like in the wilderness? And has Subaru improved the infotainment to usable status
Can’t believe this “off roader” has so poor ground clearance. Also the lack of an off road tire package.
Hope next years model steps up as you mentioned.
Thanks for the excellent review.
12:40 this perfectly encapsulates my problems with the Santa Cruz and the Ridgeline. The appeal of these vehicles is the pragmatism of a pickup without the inherent issues of owning one.
I couldn’t wait two years for a maverick so I got the Santa Cruz instead
i think the Santa Cruz is $5k over-priced. The cost is too close to the Ridgeline which is better and bigger.
Anyone that off roads knows that those steps are the first thing you would remove if you actually used the truck. It's very obvious that it was added by the marketing team. People that like the idea of off road, but don't actually know anything about it.
Yep a Poser Mobile, designed by Posers. And why would you ever pay extra for something, and then take it off imediately. With this trucklet. You just by the cheapest version with the engine model/type/size that you want and slap some worthwile tires on it , and that will be the most "off road worthy verion. Maybe put some skid plates on? But really... with that TRANSMISSION/awd system... Why Bother? :-)) And Totally OVER PRICED.
Had to protect the transmission after like 30 seconds? lol
Hey, the new Toyota tacoma sheers half shafts in less time doing the same thing. See tlr offroad. Lol😂
Not surprised its a DCT transmission 😂
Toyota hasn't been Toyota since the pandemic. Remember when they announced they were lowering their quality standards due to parts shortages? I don't think they ever went back to kaizen. @@hooty465
It's a DCT. This vehicle is in its own category. It's obviously not a true off-road vehicle.
I saw this thing with "Low Ground Clearance lame tires and such at the intro. After knowing about their issues with "over heating dual clutch transmissions" and the drive system "Shutting down the Car" and I thought this thing is not going to "make it anywhere" And then you said this is the "off road version" 😲 😅😂🤣
And ENOUGH already with these vehicles that have "normal sized tires/wheel wells having over 16" rims! I would never even accept anything over 17"! A 17 inch would also have to have room for a tire with some meat on it! Or that would be a No Go!
Love the look of this vehicle trim from Hyundai, but I cannot get past those red center caps on the wheels. They stand out like Rudolph the red nose reindeer. Those have got to go. Otherwise, cool truck.
No, they need to step up the clutches, otherwise it remains awd pavement queen, i beleive TFL had same experience, i actually wonder if Nathan is happy with his in this regard
Nathan got a 2.5L non turbo with the 8 speed auto not the 8 speed dual clutch.

Your conclusion is right on. Seems like the Hyundai products are just not cut out for any type of off-road driving. I suspect this vehicle would immediately overheat or shut off if you took it on your test hill.👎
Ryan, thanks for the review.
That Santa Cruise is definitely Not for the PNW.
I'm 6' and found the Santa Cruz very tight up front. I was waist rubbing the b-pillar getting in and out because of a vehicle parked beside, my head was about 1/2" from the headliner, and legs very close to the steering wheel. I can't see many people 5'10 or taller owning a Santa Cruz. I figure this is why the modern compact truck segment hasn't taken off; they don't have enough space with a 4 door cab and no one wants 2 door/access cab anymore, the bed is shallow and not long. The midsize class has a lot more front cabin space and feels more open comparatively.
I'm over 6' don't have any issues
I'm 5'11, 240lbs. have bulky body becasue I do weight lifting a lot but I have no issue with front seat. Also, I did not have any issue even when I had Golf GTI (mk.7) and Subaru Outback. FYI, the new Toyota Tacoma have less legrom(rear seat) than Satna Cruz. If you prefer more room, yeah you can go with Colorado or Ranger. Don't forget. It's a compact truck. Not everyone needs big full size truck.
Think you forgot to adjust the seat lol looks like others don't have issues.
Love the thorough and honest review. *no sidesteps were harmed in the making of this 😂
For that price I'd definitely go with a Subaru Outback or Forester. There is just so much more in those for the money, AND they get the job done!
Outback? Forester? Not in the ballpark of competitor IMO. If you said Maverick, Ridgeline, Ranger, Taco, or Colorado, OK, different pros and cons.
@BoopSnoot Subaru's Outback Wilderness, and even the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness are serious forces to be reckoned with. Quite capable, and have a long proven history in the off road field.

@@drivingsports Great! I am very interested in your review of that vehicle and the AWD with the Dual Clutch transmission. There is a lot of discussion about the use of that transmission. Thanks

I think the Santa Cruz is super sharp but the Interior is really disappointing. I've never driven a 2.5 so im curious about what you guys think? The 1.6 engine is the bessstttt but Kia/Hyundai transmissions are just so weird. Both my Soul and my gf's are TERRIBLE in stop and go traffic with the dual clutch and shiftronic transmissions. That being said, I probably wouldn't buy Kia/Hyundai ICE again /:
2025 gets a new interior. I've driven the 2.5. It has enough power, its direct and port injected so should stay clean of carbon, it seems reliable, its mated to an 8-speed torque converter instead of a DCT, it tows 3500lbs, but... its rated 24mpg combined, when for the exact same power output the hybrid in the Maverick will get you high 30s. Efficiency is its only real flaw. :(
@@BoopSnoot You made a typo or the hundai does Not have direct injection. Direct Injection Causes carbon build up.
Watch out for turbos. there is extra heat involved, etra pressure in the engines. they make the engines high strung and the do not last a long time. Better Oil with more often changing. and if you did "get a bit of carbon or dirt in their damaging/destroying the turbo. (or too much heat) your car will become the slowest moving dog on the road. the engines for turbo charged cars are Low Compression, The help make up for the Turbo Boosting power. When a turbo goes bad. You have LOW Compression SLOW Moving ride! And if it does have a Direct injection engine? that would just be More problems with carbon build up and lack of performance, gas mileage etc on the the car.
None of this is true. Turbo engines have lower compression ratios to compensate for the turbo boost compared to higher compression ratio naturally aspirated engines, or they have variable compression ratios like on some Nissan turbos. Virtually all non-luxury turbocharged engines are designed to run on 87 octane, including this Hyundai. Most naturally aspirated engines are also direct injected for emissions/fuel economy reasons, but this Hyundai if you research is both direct and port injected to avoid carbon buildup. @@RRr-yl8zr

I dont know if others agree on this, but I am not in favor of all these smart tech computer controlled systems that decides what, when, & how a person drives the vehicle especially in off road situations. Theres too many limitations being put in place!
Thats because these vehicles are not 4wheel drive. They do not have Locking center/low range differentials or Locking diffs, or limited slip diffs. they just have computers monitoring wheel spin and telling the brakes to clamp down or telling the center CLUTCH to try and send power to the rear. The Progams tell the computer "how much wheel spin to allow before clamping down/how fast and "hard" to clamp down. When to send power to the rear and how much. and they "protect the center (and Possible rear clutches) when to engage, how much and when to disconnect and let you down to try and protect themselves. The computer program changes these settings to perform differently in different terains. With an AWD system instead of a 4x4 system , You Want a GOOD Computer Operating/monitoring System.
