You should do a reaction to Grey's Anatomy
Great video, I am so glad that I came across your channel! I have been trying to figure out what it is that I want to do in the medical field and your channel has really helped me with my decision. Thanks alot!
I admire you! Thank you for all you do!!!
Hi. Thanks for picking my question. Really appreciate it. My life too has changed on being a medical student.
Hahahaha.its ok that you weren't able to pronounce the name. It's the conversion from my native language Hindi as I'm from India. Thankx again.
Cheers ✌️
Another great video!
Another great video.
Thank you so much
Just found you!! Lol been a CST for about 4 yrs and still learning a lot any student I come in contact with I always tell them not to piss off your nurse, the tech in charge, or any sales rep trying to help out, they are the ones who will be there for you when you need something the ones who are there to help you out. I also tell them don't say "I know" because they will get that one preceptor who will just throw them in the case & let them get yelled at. And take notes lots and lots of notes.
Very good tips! I hated hearing "they do it such and such way at such and such hospital!"
How stressful would you say this job is?
@@jordanhogan2056 It can depend on the individual. It can depend on the surgery. You're going to be pumped if a trauma comes in versus a peri rectal abscess. When you gain experience, you'll naturally be more comfortable. Merry Christmas!
@@ccoop3774 Okay, that makes sense. I've been considering this career and I have been watching this guy's videos for awhile. I guess I'm nervous I'll forget something really technical during a surgery, panic, and freeze up. Thanks for your reply, and merry Christmas to you as well!
I just want to say that it has to be hard working fulltime, taking call, making these videos and making sure your family has enough attention. I want you to know that these videos are an immense help to me in this job transition. I've been working in central sterile for about 3 years now and finally got my certification test schedule and got an interview with the OR today!
If you are flexible and can rotate through multiple services you can take those experiences and work an "off-shift" like 7p-7a 3 nights a week where you never know what you will be included in and you work with multiple surgeons in almost every specialty. Plus without a lot of the extra help you learn to lean on each other and you develop a great family attitude and in many hospitals you get a night shift differential and that's always nice.
A great video
So glad you were able to cover why the video hasn’t come out yet, greatly appreciated :)
I'm an Anesthesia tech. The machine isnt too difficult and an ST really only should know how to turn it over. Take off old circuit and suction and replace with new. Clean off machine and do a circuit test :) the basics
Sooo glad that you do videos on Surgical Technology 😍👏👏👏👏helps me a lot #SurgTechStudent2020
Can you do a video on dressings? I'm in my first semester and
I keep mixing up my dressings (mostly dermabond and mastisol, and kittners and peanuts)
Hi Shane, thanks so much for answering my question! Love your videos!😀
Can the military tech be able to sit in for the NBSTSA test or NCCT test or both?
Is there a specific place that we can ask you questions? I have a couple I'd like to ask for the next q and a

What's the difference between graduating with an AAS vs a certificate in surgical technology?
Hello sir , how can i contact you , i really need your help
Do anyone know what college/school he went to to start his surgical technician career?
Can you do another RoBot Video?
Should a future student buy books/audiobooks in advance to prepare and study ?
Stephanie S most schools will provide the materials u would need, I bought a cpl of extra anatomy books for myself and there are lots of free study guides and apps to get you ready for the national exam. Also the school that you will go to will usually have a small library that you could borrow books from. Just takes lots and lots of notes.
Would you give a candid memory of a “learned opportunity” made in the beginning of CST that made you better and a major confidence making moment that cemented your momentum
Not Shane, obviously. I was an RN that transferred to surgery and had to learn pretty much everything. I remember screwing up one day. I was beating myself up over it when my boss sat down. She told me that I would never make that mistake again. She was right, too! There's a lot to learn and it's not going to happen overnight. I hope you love the job as much as I did!
As you have been working as a surg tech for as long as you have, I am sure you have seen plenty of students or new hires right out of school come and go. For those that quit suddenly... what do you think the reason for that is? I ask bc my student and now new hire orientation process has been very difficult. I am one of the first newbies my hospital has hired in a long time. My OR colleagues have years of experience from all different backgrounds and are amazing techs. But staffing on a whole has been an issue. A lot of the time, I have been paired with a Tech who doesn't want to teach, is being paid to teach but isn't a good teacher, and/or wants to teach, is great at it, but isnt being paid the extra buck to teach bc of some sort of HR infraction. Working through this, I found myself making mental notes on how each surgical tech preceptor prefers things to be done instead of focusing on what I needed to know to anticipate my surgeon! I have had preceptors degrade me and throw me under the bus for their errors in front of the rest of the surgical team. As a student, I was told that I shouldn't speak unless spoken to. Now as a student turned new hire, any attempts to assert myself have had worse outcomes. After talking with new techs at the AST conference in DC this year, I know that I am not the only one experiencing these issues! I do know one thing, we all thought about quitting but we still came back. This isn't a "right of passage/hazing...this is a real problem. With your experience, maybe you could share some insight on how to approach this issue? How to talk to preceptors or our new bosses?? Something?
Hi Danielle, I have the same issues , I hope you and your OR enviroment is better now... mine still bad as the beginning no body cares and I think that's why many ST just go back school for RN, which is not the solution for many of us , very unfriendly environment for ppl just started this carrier
Is there a possibility to start off as a Central Processing Technician and work your way up to become a Surgical Tech? Would you recommend this route? Asking due to the reason that there is a Technical School in GA to receive certification for Surgical Technology, however one must complete the Associates Program. I am not sure which route to take/is best. HOPE TO HEAR BACK FROM YOU!! PLEASE AND THANK YOU
I'm in school now for ST from what I've learned was SP techs (sterile processing) do not transfer over. But as a surgical tech we can do some of the sterilizing, mostly just a flash sterilization. If you want to be sugical tech go for surgical tech you will learn sterilizing
Check out chatt tech, the Marietta location offers a cert
Hello! I am an OR nurse at the university of Iowa. I scrub and circulate, I have learned so much from your videos about scrubbing considering I did not go to surgical technologist school! One question I have is how to pass sharp skin hooks I have been poked by these a couple of times now! Not sure if it is me or our inexperienced residents! Thanks!
Do y'all work with a "sharp zone?" It can be those little rectangular or kidney basins. That's where the scalpel and loaded suture is placed and any other sharps can be too. I believe some places call it a "universal zone." We were using that system for sharps at least 10 years ago. I also scrubbed and circulated.
c coop unfortunately we do not we hand sharps all the time! I wish we had a safe zone and some services at my hospital do. I work on the otolaryngology, oral surgery, ophthalmology team and they refuse to use a safe zone and want sharps directly handed to them.
@@abbiering5686 It was an adjustment for everyone to use the Sharp Zone. After awhile, even the physicians liked them. Naturally, it didn't speed things up, but was safer for all. We did find that the way some cases are positioned (patient and/or table/mayo) it's just not possible. Sometimes you're just going to have to pass. Our docs didn't have a choice. When the facility has policies, that trumps the surgeon! Have you discussed this with your boss? This is a serious matter. Those are sharp instruments and they easily pierce the skin. I wish you luck!
Is the ST certification only good in the state you receive it in or is it good in every state?
NBSTSA certification is nationwide.
@@SurgicalTechTips Thank you!
I've been thinking seriously about becoming a S.T., But I have doubts about whether I will make it through the program, in terms of smarts. Is surgical tech schooling hard to get through? Do you have to be super smart in order to pursue a career in this field??
I am in the same position right now, I hope he answers.
How much does a Surgical first Assistant from being a CST make on the East or West Coast?
The First Assistant isn't recognized in SC.
Hi i am a medical student in turkey
Oh man, I feel the same way, except I wasted the government’s money and obtained a useless degree. Going back to school for nursing and I haven’t been more excited for school in my life.
Why do you think its wasted?
How to become a Cardio thoracic surgeon want
blackshadow33 517 four years of college. Then four years of medical school. Then surgery residency which can take 5 years. And then after that you can do a fellowship to specialize in cardio thoracic surgery which can take like 1-2 more years
Is a Surgical Tech Certificate as good an Associate? Do employers care?
No a certificate means you learned the basics to get a job. And with the associates it's just basic college courses added. Some states want you to be NBSTSA certified some just accept the certificate. And some states want you to have the associates of science
@@adamcastillo1951 thank you so much for your reply. I'm excited to start my associate's in January!
I'm in school now for ST and it's for the certificate but by the time I make it to clinicals they should have the associates program rolling and I can just stick around for those classes.
FIRST
Damn
Does it matter and does it effect my pay if I receive a diploma or an associate's degree in Surgical Technology?
