Great videos. I'm on the other end of the spectrum from the ones saying throw them all back. I love to catch, and eat catfish. I understand throwing back the big blues, some are terrible tasting, but those dinks in a little cornmeal and grease are scrumptious!
I also catch and eat. I have caught 1000's of fish and not one over 15lbs. It was released. 3-4 lbers are great eating, I just had a fish fry yesterday for family. Had to run out and buy a new fish cooker as when i turned the propane on to mine and reached for the other valve to set flame the top of my regulator blew off into my hand. It hurt like hell and also hit one of my fingers right on the nail and blood gushed out. Got it stopped had people on the way and just went to find another regulator at home depot. None like i had. My Son was with me so he said happy fathers day early and bought me a new fish turkey fryer, Got back and folks were there and what was supposed to be a 6pm meal ended up being a 9pm meal. Everyone got there belly full and i had fish for breakfast lol. Here in Texas it is highly illegal to use catfish for bait though.
I've used 8-10 inch channel cats for bait for years. Don't worry about what people get mad about. Most of them are just looking for something to be mad about. That's just part of living in the offended age. BTW, great video. I really enjoyed it.
@@shiroikin I don't know the laws in Texas, but in Mississippi there is no limit on catfish. In the Tennessee river, I highly doubt that there is a limit since the river is poluted and there are signs everywhere saying don't eat the fish.

Enjoyed the video Dave! Conservation is a wonderful thing and a fairly recent practice as far as human interaction with fish and game goes. I knew your catfish for bait videos might strike some folks wrong. FWIW carp, suckers, and such are a no offense option. Smallmouth and Spotted/ Largemouth bass work as well or better. Nothing wrong with exploring bait options in a pinch. Bass make tasty fish-flavored sandwiches! It ain't Walleye, just a larger bluegill that tastes great. Selective harvest is critical to trophy fishermen. Fish are good bait and enjoyable on the table!

Those no roll sinkers take a few tries to get them right. I found dipping the wires in furniture polish ( what I had layin around and the hole in the bottle happened to be the perfect size) keeps the wires clean and easy to pull out. Can't wait to see a video. And Congrats on the first catfish!
Another great video, I used to pour my own spinner baits, 1/8 oz lead heads & other stuff, the one tip I can give you is this, before you pour the first oz of lead is heat up your mold. I would sit my melting pot on my mold for 15 min & then flip it over & give it about 10 more minutes. If you pour into a cold mold it will not fill up until that mold gets hot. Good luck.. keep the videos coming, I have learned a lot for watching your videos. I am local maybe we will meet one day.. 😎
As a salt water fisherman anything that's the right size is eligible to become cut bait. My youngest son is a mechanic and one time he brought me a five gallon bucket half filled with used tire weights. A small cast iron skillet and my old coleman stove and it didn't take long to melt plenty of lead down and I would fish the steel clips out. I like the football shaped weights for carolina style rigging so I bought a mold and made my own for years. I also use old cast net weights.

I ordered a melting pot last year and bought molds for bank sinkers and i have been making all my own saving money on waits i dont even buy lead anymore i get it free out of old car batteries then melt it down and make a ton of bank sinkers ....i also vacuum seal my skipjack and freez them myself that is another thing i think you should try i do really well on them i have never had a problem catching huge flatheads on frozen skipjack i have thrown fresh gizzard shad and shellcrackers out and frozen skip at the same time and they will always hit the frozen skipjack and it wss in the freezer for 9 months but its still preserved so fresh and bleeds like i just cought it and i dont use salt at all just vacuum them while still fresh and they stay fresh...good job tho love the video Dave

Just wanted to say that if that is the Caney Creek in Roane County, that my grandpa and I have caught quite a few 50lb+ in there. Also caught a 70lb flathead in the Emory River about 5 minutes down the road from Caney Creek.

Have you poured any lead yet ? Light a cheap candle like a birthday cake type and hold your molds over the flame getting suet inside of the cavities and sprues. Get them good and black especially the sprues. This will help the flow in and release easier.

I'm a new fan dave.... I just subscribed to you... ain't no one perfect man... people been hunting and fishing for food for 100,000+ years man.... I think your entitled to harvest a fish man... anyone says otherwise is being intellectually dishonest. The majority of people out here aren't vegans and if it weren't for the structure of society today those vegans wouldn't survive. We are omnivores... thats our nature... and using food to catch more and bigger food ain't nothing new. As long as we are responsible and make sure there is a future for those species we hunt and fish for, and we don't drive them to extinction, then we are fine... we are responsible and ethical sportsman... we do not wish to eradicate any species... its nature brother... you did nothing wrong and you and most people who know how the world really works... know it.

Small catfish makes great bait and thumbs up to you for catch and release of the big catfish they are breeders in my book. 2 to 10 pound catfish make the best eating, they are one of my sorce of food. 👍

I'm a little late to this party but I just wanted to say that you don't owe anybody an apology for anything that I've seen you do. I've used small catfish for bait and have fished with trot lines and jugs my entire life. And when we are setting out trot lines or running jugs we are fishing for meat. I love eating fish and so does my entire family and the best way to fill the freezer is with trot lines or jugs. Hell, I've caught huge Flatheads that ate the channel cat that ate the Bluegill I originally baited the lines with. Mean ol' Flathead! Don't get me wrong, I release pretty much everything I catch on rod and reel. Unless it's a pan size Channel and we decide we want fried fish for supper that night at camp. I've never understood people who watch videos just to hate on them. They don't have much of a life and should just shut up and take care of their own household. Keep on doing what you're doing Dave and I'll keep watching.

Legally speaking you can't do that where I live. Here in Texas you should be tossing back cats smaller then 12in
now don't get me wrong by all means use it for bait just understand your state/local laws on conservation.

Catfish Dave, you are doing better than just fine. You are doing great. Some of the best videos on UA-cam and there are not a lot of bank fishermen to be found anywhere to learn from. Keep up the great videos and don't sweat those that have no common sense. Life's too short. tight lines

I am glad your women caught some fish with you . Tell her she done a great job for her first couple times catching catfish, and I hope you guys will do an actual whole video together when warmer weather comes. I think she will have the hang of things in no time, all you have to remember Dave is that she is a noob at this and be patient with her. I'm a new fan dave.... I just subscribed to you... ain't no one perfect man... people been hunting and fishing for food for 100,000+ years man.... I think your entitled to harvest a fish man... anyone says otherwise is being intellectually dishonest. The majority of people out here aren't vegans and if it weren't for the structure of society today those vegans wouldn't survive. We are omnivores... thats our nature... and using food to catch more and bigger food ain't nothing new. As long as we are responsible and make sure there is a future for those species we hunt and fish for, and we don't drive them to extinction, then we are fine... we are responsible and ethical sportsman... we do not wish to eradicate any species... its nature brother... you did nothing wrong and you and most people who know how the world really works... know it.

I think you did a great job explaining the whole catfish for bait topic. You just keep doing what you do. You explained this approach very well from the beginning. I just don’t understand some people who thought it was bad. Did they complain about skip jack or shad or crappie? Some people just want to complain about everything.

Small catfish makes great bait and thumbs up to you for catch and release of the big catfish they are breeders in my book. 2 to 10 pound catfish make the best eating, they are one of my sorce of food. 👍

I'm a little late to this party but I just wanted to say that you don't owe anybody an apology for anything that I've seen you do. I've used small catfish for bait and have fished with trot lines and jugs my entire life. And when we are setting out trot lines or running jugs we are fishing for meat. I love eating fish and so does my entire family and the best way to fill the freezer is with trot lines or jugs. Hell, I've caught huge Flatheads that ate the channel cat that ate the Bluegill I originally baited the lines with. Mean ol' Flathead! Don't get me wrong, I release pretty much everything I catch on rod and reel. Unless it's a pan size Channel and we decide we want fried fish for supper that night at camp.
I've never understood people who watch videos just to hate on them. They don't have much of a life and should just shut up and take care of their own household. Keep on doing what you're doing Dave and I'll keep watching.
