OK kids, let this be a lesson - when you go to Vegas and lose your shirt, it is time to stop. Buster would not stop and he lost his ass.
My grandfather worked for GM in the 40’s until retiring in 1974. He was on the team that DEVELOPED the crash test dummies and my mom remembers going shopping for clothes for the dummies. Grandpa talked one time about developing a perfect equivalent to human bone. The results when they tested it in a dummy were so horrific that film (especially the kids one) was destroyed.
There was a magazine in one of the Detroit Sunday papers (Parade?) with my grandpa and his co-workers on the cover and the headline “These Dummies Could Save Your Life!” The family always wondered if they were talking about the manikins or my grandpa and his co-workers.
Grandpa Raymond Maltby passed away in 1998. I wish he was still around so I could record some of his stories. He’d have been 104 this year.

When I worked at the USAF Centrifuge at Wright-Patt, we had 3 crash test dummies (2 male, 1 female) for testing hardware and experiments all of them were named Dave (Yes, the female was also Dave), which meant that two of my coworkers shared names with the dummies. The dummies were Dave2, Dave3, and Dave4, and the coworkers were Dave1 and Dave5, since he started later.
Lol reminds me of 2 johns I worked with who were friends and went by John and OJ (other john)
I also worked with a guy called Dave. He was a dummy to.
Sounds like the town I grew up in during the 70's. There were only 40 kids at the school and most of them were Daves (some of them were girls too). Only one was born there and the rest moved in during the next five years. We joked that all the parents were probably stoned during the entire 1960s (when all the Daves were born) and decided that "Yeah man, let's call him/her Dave....it's a cool name and easy to remember..." Because this was in a regional area of Australia, first names didn't really matter, as everyone was called and known by their nickname which was usually a contraction of possibly their surname and/or an embarrassing incident, injury, ailment or disability.
i used to work at GM in vandalia, OH. half of the plant was making airbags and door panels, the other side was one of the few engineering facilities in north america (i think there was five?). anyway, they did crash tests there. a friend of mine who i worked with on the floor wound up cleaning offices at night. i worked third, so one night she asked if i wanted to see something creepy.
well, duh.
during lunch she led me to a dimly lit corridor, like out of a horror movie. along both sides of this long hall, single bulb lamps dangling from a tall ceiling, was lined dozens of crash test dummies like bodies waiting to be buried. it was the creepiest damn thing no haunted house could ever hope to do.
Buster wasn't just a dummy who could muster dangers so crummy... but we could trust for any stunt that'd make Knieval turn his tummy. And now he may be just a mummy, covered in dust or ballistic gelatin so gummy, he still will forever be known as the personified doll that was funny.

I believe he lost his bottom in the myth (cant remember name) where they dropped buster from a crane into the bay to see if a bridge worker can survive a fall into water if a tool hits the water first breaking the surface tension.
I remember that one too. Pretty sure it's the one.

Oh wow, I never imagined there were still Buster's fragments in existence, I thought it was pulverized beyond recovery on it's last ride.
The one buster incident I still remember was testing falling with a life raft, like Indiana Jones. He quickly fell out of the raft and was completely shattered when he hit the ground. What I really remember was your complete shock and horror at the sight.

I've been rewatching old episodes and the ones with Buster are mostly my favourites! Falling Bubble-Gunner Saved By Bomb Shockwave, however, sticks out in my head since it was deemed TOO DANGEROUS even for the B-Man! Also that ep features one of the best amped-up explosions at Jamie's behest! BOOOM!

5:40 I believe you're referring to his first test? which was the hammer drop. I remember you saying he was hitting the water so hard that pieces of foam was shooting out of his butt. I dunno? that's the first thing I remember. But still a memorable show, and quite honestly, the greatest stuntman who ever lived.

The myth that broke buster was the rocket sled myth. When Kari Byron, Grant Imahara, and Tory Belleci strapped buster to a rocket sledd. And made hi. Hit a huge concrete slab. It disintegrated Buster into millions of pieces 😁

My grandpa earned the nickname ‘Buster’ as a teenager in the 1930s. By the time I knew him, it was shortened to ‘Bus’. I always thought Buster should’ve been called ‘Bus’.

I think that myth was when Buster lost his ass. I seem to remember a line from Adam about the impact "ripping foam out of his butt".

I don't think they ever recovered *every* part that Buster lost in that episode.

Love buster, Im 2022 and I grew watching mythbusters loved the show was very entertaining and I learned a lot, a few months ago I binged watch the show again and learned alot more. That crash test dummy was I feel as part of the crew. Thst thing went through so many memorable moments ones insane.
Buster is fantastic and has always been a fan favorite. His remaining pieces should be well kept and well taken care of

Buster has always been an inspiration to me. No matter how beat up he got, or how many times he got his ass handed to him. He just kept going, without saying a word of complaint.
He reattached his head and limbs, and wore his scars with pride.
Even when the guys teased him, by painting his face, or forced him to wear silly clothes. He was just ice cold. He endured, despite constant adversity.
In my school days, when the show ran. When ever I recieved a wooping by the bullies, or by my dad, when he came home drunk. I could always find strength in the knowledge, that it wasn't as bad, as what the guys would put Buster through, in the next episode.
When finally the bullying and dad stopped. I credit that to the lessons I learned from Buster. Don't give Bullies what they want. Don't show fear, and don't cry, so they won't feel strong, and like they have accomplished something.

I remember watching MythBusters every Sunday night on discovery with my mom and my dad, we never missed an episode, I would absolutely love a piece of Buster to hang on the wall beside my piece of Grave Digger as legendary memorabilia.

If I remember a previous video right, Buster shattered to pieces in one of the first tests, because he was subjected to a force way beyond the intended use-case for crash test dummies.

My guess is that buster lost his ass on the hammer drop. I don't know that they specifically mention it in that episode, but he hit with enough force to rip his leg off. If I remember correctly they did that to him repeatedly. That was early in the series, I doubt they had done too much damage to him prior to that.

Back in the 90's, I worked for a company that made infant car seats which were required to tested using a crash test dummy. But unlike Buster, the dummy we used was infant sized and didn't have all of the internal instrumentation that the adult dummies were equipped with. The test facility being in Buffalo, NY meant that I would need to fly from Chicago with our company's dummy. I decided that the dummy "as-is" was a little boring, so I dressed it in children's clothes (shirt, pants, shoes, & hat) and gave it a face. He also had his own name tag (Elmo Rider). He was lucky enough to meet the pilot on one of our trips and even got his picture taken in the cockpit (times were different back then). The stewardesses were especially interested in him. I also have several pictures of him "sightseeing" around Buffalo.

What ever happened to that V2 buster model. I remember you guys did an entire special of rebuilding buster with wooden bones (would break like a human bone), reinforced joints, and skin that simulates human skin.
I remember seeing it for a few episodes and then back to the old style buster. Was it just to much work to keep up fixing the V2 mode ?
I was thinking the same thing. I loved that episode, and was really disappointed when they barely used it beyond a few episodes.
I imagine creating the custom parts for it over and over just wasn't feasible for a show that has more than 20 episodes a year.

I remember the big thing was the wood bones that had a breaking force of roughly a human bone.
But I think around that time they started working with G sensors and blast disks which were easier to use.

I think the myth that lost Buster's rear was "Can you throw a hammer to hit water before you hit, would it save you?" I remember one throw, Buster was missing his entire lower half.
I remember that one. Adam was even commenting on how the impact with the water was taking pieces of foam out of Buster's rear.

I swear I remember Buster losing his ass the time one of the teams was testing something about hitting the surface of water at different velocities. They had him hooked up to a crane that he'd zip-line down and he hit ass first.
