Advocating for the vernacular did not give anathema. The anathema was if you advocated ONLY for the vernacular and denied the use of Latin in the mass. Session 22 Canon 9. If anyone says that the rite of the Roman Church, ...; or that the mass ought to be celebrated in the vernacular tongue only; ...let him be anathema.
