  • Brexit and the recent instability in Northern Ireland pose some key questions for policy makers and politicians on these islands: How damaged are North-South relations by the current instability in unionism? What are the implications for Northern Ireland’s peace process? Is there an acceptable version of the Northern Ireland Protocol? Has Brexit undermined British-Irish relations? Is the route towards a united Ireland clearer or more complicated?
In this IIEA webinar, Tommie Gorman draws on his experience to address these questions and reflects on the future of Northern Ireland and British-Irish relations.
    About the Speaker:
Tommie Gorman is the former Northern Editor at RTÉ. A native of Sligo, he started his career at the Western Journal in the late 1970s, before moving to RTÉ, where he spent over four decades in a variety of roles, including North West Correspondent and Europe Editor, before moving to Belfast as Northern Editor in 2001. He also produced a number of television documentaries on the topic of Northern Ireland and on pre-EU accession countries. Mr Gorman was awarded EMI’s European of the Year in 2001 for his work covering the EU institutions and was awarded an honorary master's degree by NUI Galway in October 2009.
Recorded on the 16th of June 2021

Trade between Britain and Ireland showing a surplus for Ireland for the first time ever. Well done to Irish business and govt in using last few years creating new supply lines from continent.
Trade between North and south stronger and growing. Whatever about a United Ireland the ever increasing eu supply lines of trade of northern Ireland keeps heading towards a United island creating an ever increasing economic bond that makes peace an ever increasing necessity

Great interview, thank you.. 3 points. 1 2016 Trump elected US president, not Bush...2 Peter Robinson, had issues other than health to deal with, ie all i would say, look at the Lagan valley cafe development at the time involving someone very close to him -say no more, please research and third,in the 30th min of this excellent analyst ,the Conservatives in many case do not give a damn about the Union, only consolidating power at Westminster, making cash from trade deals, has in many respects become an ENGLISH nationalist party, so will not cave in to the Dup. Getting the US trade deal to them is more important than NI. jOHNSON has a majority of 78, so even with a few Unionist supporters is unlikely to loss, the elephant in the room maybe how the two main opposition parties:Lab and SNP will react .

Why are foster children excluded from the apology. The Republic in their apology excluded children who were unaccompanied in County Homes. In the North and the South administrations have denied justice to the survivors of the foster care system. Why?

Tommie is the quintessential gentleman. His analysis has always been sound and delivered in a manner that does not seek to offend. It’s great to see him again. On the question of a future border poll, I can’t see one taking place in Northern Ireland while Scotland is refused. But in the event that a poll does eventually take place lessons need to be learned from Brexit where not enough was done to explain to UK voters what the realities of leaving the EU could mean. Many in Northern Ireland might be unaware of the economic practicalities of joining with the Republic in regard to the daily cost of living and accessing healthcare. Nationalist parties in Northern Ireland carefully avoid this topic. As for the Irish Language Act, it’s the right thing to do, but if the much talked about cost of £50M a year is true then it’s coming at a high price when the Health Service in Northern Ireland needs every spare penny it can get.
These are interesting times. Maybe it’ll all just “collapse into place” as someone once said in the dreary corridors of Castle Buildings...

Can’t say I agree with your assumption. For one thing, I don’t see the Brits giving up Northern Ireland. Hell they went half way round the globe with a modern day armada to make sure they didn’t lose a little outpost in the south Atlantic called the Falkland Islands. In addition, how would The Republic of Ireland possibly be able to take on the financial burden of Northern Ireland? The Brits pour about 16 Billion pounds into it every year to keep it afloat. Then you have about three quarters of a million Unionists that for some reason I just don’t see going belly up to accept a United Ireland. That’s a bloody nightmare the ROI can do without.

I am in Liverpool England my perspective is a Nationalist outlook, the British Government is the Conservative Party (with its Imperial past) now Little Englanders yet they fail to except that they manipulated and partitioned Ireland. As a consiquence of thier Jerrymandering the Unionists are steadfast in undermining The Little England Conservatives attept to withdraw from Ireland. It is obviouse that we are in the real last phase of the End Game of British whithdrawal in Ireland.
