My Dad used to fish that section of Shade Creek from where it ended into the Bkacklog creek to the bridge on RT 35 for many many years. Often times I'd go with him when I was younger. I doubt there is any foot of the stream he had not walked in. I always remembered the sign but I never got a bad feeling in that area.

Never had the bad feeling and have fished it as well. BUT... there have been times while I was exploring the hills that things seemed "off".

This was my playground and safe place as a child. My Grandparents used to own the house that it seen for just a blip. The green place was a grist mill then a bait shop for my knowledge. But Boulder hoping in that creek was always an adventure. It's probably what led to my love of steep hikes and big rocks. It's certainly an ethereal place . I'd rather be in deaths shadow than part of. Never knew that sign was there until >10 years ago... We lived in Horse Valley. Just North of Letterkenny Army Depot. Their were stories of horses kept there for Northern Calvary in Civil War. Tunnels from the house to the woodshed. And mountains. Continue East is Bear Valley and ethereal again is the closest I can find reasonably. If you find the time we should talk sometime if your interested. Certainly a fellow traveler. I thoroughly appreciate your videos and willingness. Be vigilant. Little by little acquirerth much. Oh and a potential reference I found to this location. I THINK, was in an account of the returning parties from the Clinton-Sullivan Campaign...

That valley is pretty much unchanged... maybe a little wider on the road, but that is it.

I grew up in Shade Gap and have a binded book handed down to me , I don't remember the title off hand but it said in their that it was named " The shadow of death" because of the Indian ambushes on the new settlers. Also said that the Indian tribe that occupied the area wouldn't travel alone there because " the sun never touched the ground". I'll look it up when I get back home to Shade Gap and share it thank you for your video.

That is one of the common stories. Similar sentiment was also written by Captain Jack Armstrong (namesake of all the mountains, valley's and passes called by his name 'Jack')

Scott, down in Lancaster county, in Conoy Township, where Peter's Road used to be. There are a few native sites in the area, but I think also a relic of an older time. What I mean from that is, the Conoy Creek is labeled as if it were a road. You can see this on Google maps as well. It appears a road travels north along the path of the creek, however, all there is is brush along that side of the creek, with a few places that appear to have been leveled at one time. Not only is there an artifact on Google, but at the bridge the main road crosses over the creeks green road sign labeled "Conoy Cr" is there. It resembles a street name sign. I've wondered if this is because small rivers and creeks were once labeled as thorough ways, and that area in particular was on that had high use. Let me know what you think.

While you are in the huntingdon county count areas. You may want to check out the history of the Erie Canal that ran through these areas. Very interesting! Especially the Newton-Hamilton area just to the east of the huntingdon county border in mifflin county.

I always loved to read the blue historical markers in PA. My favorite 2 are Ft Dewart and Edmunds Swamp in Shade Township, Somerset County. They are near my hometown.

    • @ODDySEEy

Fr. Dewart... that is a good story with Sir Allen Maclean... I don't know Edmunds (I wonder if that is pioneer Edmund Cartlidge) I will have to look it up :D There was a time when I was a little younger where my intent was to go to every one of these in PA and make a video.

I know this area. I met Peggy Ann. And I’m a descendant of the Weiser family.

      @ODDySEEy  Рік тому

I have not done a story on Peggy Ann because 1. she is probably tired of it and 2. she is elderly in a home and I feel it would be inappropriate to leverage that. Met her for about 5 mins when she was outside one day (at the home) and she was very chatty. Maybe in a few years I will revisit her story and tell it without all the publicity hype.

A friend shared this with me, as I live just up the mountain from the “Shadow of Death” in Locke’s Valley. We just moved to the area a little over a year ago, so are still learning about our new home. Thank you for the history lesson, it was fascinating!

I am a former employee of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the partial administers of the Conrad Weiser Homestead in Womelsdorf. My work had nothing to do with history as I was an IT professional. However, I did work with a Fred Weiser, who shared that he was a relative of Conrad Weiser, although I can neither confirm or deny it. That information gave me interest to view this video and learn a little more.
    Thanks for sharing!

All Hail the IT guys (see my ODDySEEy Profile to understand why I say that). History comes in a couple of forms and I hate most of them... what I try to do is put a MODERN face back on who we once were. You see, when you think of your parents as kids you imagine something in black and white and wholesome... and the reality is they were JUST LIKE YOU WERE. We as humans have not changed our ways in hundreds of years, but people paint our ancestors as if they were some type of robots or cavemen... but even the cavemen had lives exactly like ours, with less technology and creature comforts...which they didn't need because it is obviously not helping our society very much either.

Fascinating.. without knowing the history it's hard to know why it was named that but one wouldn't necessarily pick that name unless there was a somewhat negative connotation to it, right? In other words it wasn't named Sunny valley haha.. shadow of death is very clear in its unpleasantness but exactly why will always remain a mystery👻

I have a close friend who has been asking me to hit this site since the channel kicked off. Because of the connection and overabundance of references to the Peggy Bradnick event, I have avoided it. So then I decided I was going to get to the bottom of it and was totally blown away by the fact that there was NOTHING... absolutely NOTHING beyond what I have given in the video. I felt that, although it kept with the channel videos, I was going to majorly let my friend down... just to have him comment as you have that "it is more exciting because there is no answer and will always remain a mystery".

Great video Scott, growing up in Shade Gap I drove by that sign many times and always wandered the meaning of it, and heard pretty much the same reasons you described in the video, I’m really looking forward to the video about the Mountain Man and Peggy Ann Bradnick, I know where most of the incidents took place both before the kidnapping and during the manhunt, even in school most of my book reports were from the book Deadly Pursuit that was about the kidnapping

You are absolutely right. I always try and at least read the title of those signs, because it's hard to even do that sometimes while driving. But when we passed that sign I caught that title, I had to turn around and read it. The explanation that the reason is unknown on the sign definitely didn't dispell the feeling of unease. The only other sign which is even more uneasy to me is the babes in the woods.

One of the things about Conrad Weiser is that he was so peaceful and docile and so loved by the Indians, that when a man pointed a gun at him, it caused the Indians to get so pissed that they burned down Cabins. I will get you that full story sometime soon... maybe next week or sometime later this month.

I spent DAYS digging in the archives on this one and the ONLY piece of information regarding this sign is the mentioning of it in two books. One was Conrads and the other was John Harris (founder of Harrisburg) who never traveled the path but copied the names from Conrads Journal in order to make a "map" or "guide" for people who wanted to PAY for it.
