- On September 25, 2012, renowned jazz pianist, Fred Hersch, visited the School for Creative & Performing Arts (SCPA) in his hometown, Cincinnati, Ohio. Fred presented a master class to the SCPA students in the jazz program. Master artists visit SCPA as part of the Artistic Excellence Program sponsored by the Mayerson Foundation.
Wow this is incredible! I was a jazz major (upright bass) at SCPA thru 2001. Fred Hersch was one of my all time favorate jazz musicians and composers. It must of been a real privilege to attend this clinic.
This quarter note exercise is really forcing kids to get out from behind style and take risks. It’s a wonderful tool.
As Fred is fond of saying, "You're only a half-step away from something great."
Incredible! Thanks
There's another jazz luminary--whose workshops were always about identifying and naming the "modes" for every chord in a popular song. We did so, but so what? I never sensed any application of this exercise to my playing or anyone else's in the room. Fred's quarter note exercise is immediately "translatable" and productive.
Thanks for sharing. Worth uploading an un edited version if you can too
