- Though his formal education includes study at the New England Conservatory, Fred Hersch readily points out how the on-the-bandstand schooling he received in jazz clubs like Bradley's in New York prepared him to be the musician is today. In the course of our conversation, we spoke about this journey and all that has come in its wake, but returned again and again to the idea of taking chances, trying things out, seeing what happens if-Hersch seemingly unbowed by the anxieties such open-ended performance situations bring into play. Later, he came at it head-on. "I think there has to be a certain element of danger in jazz, or it isn't really jazz," he explained.

Video presentation by Molly Sheridan
"There is a lot of contemporary composition that seem to be written by composers to have other composers analyze them in theory departments in other music schools...". So beautifully said and so true...
This is a nice video of a great artist but where are the names of the bassist and drummer? Looks like it might be Nasheet Waites and John Hebert ? Here is Fred Hersch talking about the great interaction between musicians and then they don't mention the musicians. The members of the trio should always be mentioned upfront.
Excellent Point.
Thanks so much for sharing this! Wonderful Stuff. Always Be Listening...
Fresh Hersch is probably in my top 3 of pianists. His covers of ballads are so beautiful
You’re the best Fred !!
Il miglior pianista del mondo...!!!
Great Fred!!!
Music for the paper, and music for the body and soul...he is definitely in the 2nd category.
Why would you say that?
@@Pedraga ...because, he was listening to Fred explain that he isn’t as interested in writing for Academia (the head), so a logical assumption is that he composes and plays for the whole of our being; body and soul. Cheers. Always Be Listening...

Free players, inside players, swingers those who don't exactly . highly composed large ensemble "Maria Schnider" "Jim Knapp" "Nordal" and even Braxton. It speaks to you or not hu? However I fear the lack of exposure to serious instrumental music today . When I young there was a lot of gateway music. You know early fusion prog rock . To me brainyack is ok if it works .
Maria Schneider!
Right...it's funny how many of the greatest musicians sooner or later seem to make almost an apology for being "tonal"....as if today was really 1920 where so many anal retentive academics claimed that melody was consonance was dead. Joke is, jazz won...while pencil pushers were chasing pitch sets, the "real" world of jazz introduced rhythms, timbres and improv. Coltrane and Hendrix etc., rarely played anything that could ever be notated
