Wood Turning an End Grain Macadamia Lidded Box Snake Skin
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 жов 2024
- Here I turn an end grain Macadamia lidded box. I have a nice piece of macadamia that had a split on the end so I decided to trim it off and use it for small turnings like this. Macadamia is a pretty hard wood but turns nicely and has wonder grain pattern.
I may use some of the smaller pieces of Macadamia to do a segmented turning of sorts. Not sure I would be able to use the wedgie sled I built for cutting segments though. I have a big enough piece to make a natural edge bowl but not sure I should turn so much of it into sawdust.

This is an extremely beautiful piece of work. The grain is nothing but perfect for this piece. I'm happy to see the end result.
Thank you Richard it is such spectacular grain for sure.
What a beautiful piece! I always like seeing how amazing the grain shines through on a simply shaped piece.
Thank you Cheryl, I was lucky to come across this piece of wood. I made 2 bowls from it as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Trust me to be 'late' with a comment Gary but gosh this is a beautifully grained piece of timber & you have certainly done it proud. Beautifully & carefully turned with a lovely commentary. A lot of work for a small piece bust gosh, it is worth every second of it. Thanks for sharing Gary & as always, stay safe & well. Don from South Aust.
Thank you Don, happy you liked it. I was very lucky to come across this piece of wood along with a number of burls and other wood. My wife spotted it at a garage sale. The piece is sitting on my desk right in front of me right now.
Take care,
Gary
Great box. Great job instructing how you did it. Thanks
Thank you very much. They are fun to turn. Especially when the grain has an area that matches so well. Thanks for watching and commenting Leefy.Gary
Lovely little box...the macadamia is gorgeous!
Thank you very much. Looking at it when it was a lot I had no idea how spectacular the grain was. I probably said WOW 100 times while I was making the box.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Thanks to You and Phil I got to see this. This is a pretty box, great Job and interesting grains in the wood.
Thank you so much. I have to thank Phil also that you were able to see the box. I love the grain in macadamia and
will plan out some more special things to make from what I have. I already have some plans for the scraps. To me small pieces do not equal scraps for wood like this.
Gary
Wow. That Macadamia looks very much like silky oak except the colour. Lovely little box
Thank you very much David.
Gary
Very nice project Gary. Very nice. Like most of the viewers I've also never seen macadamia wood. However while you were working and finishing it I couldn't help notice how close the grain pattern resembled Lacewood. Thanks for sharing!
Did a little more digging and found that the macadamia and Lacewood trees are in the same family. (The Proteaceae family. Which also includes Silky Oak and Leopardwood.)
Thank you MIke and I had never seen it before myself. I bought a small log at a garage sale. The guy had brought it from Hawaii. I have the other half and will turn it some day. Having something that rare I am saving it for just the right turning.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Good research Mike. Have you seen the bowl I made from it? It has spectacular grain as well.

That's some beautiful wood nice job as usual don't know what else to say WOW
Thank you Raymond. That says it all.
Thank you for watching.

Gary the Macadamia wood grain is absolutely stunning and amazing. It is a fantastic little lidded box you made.
Thanks Kobie I am glad i turned this one first. Then i knew the wood was something very special.
Many thanks to you for watching and your support.
Gary
Great little box; you did a nice job on it. The grain reminds me a little of Leopard wood.
Thank you George I was calling it leopard skin for awhile. Then I was thinking snake skin. Check out the bowl I just did from the piece I cut this one from. Amazing grain.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Very nice piece Gary. Beautiful wood.
Thank you. I was just amazed when I put the finish on. Such an unusual grain.
Gary
Beautiful bowl, I've never seen macadamia wood before. I'm glad Phil told me about you.
~Kevin
Thank you Kevin, This was the first macadamia I have seen myself. Thanks to my wife I came home with some great wood the day I got it. She told me about some turning stock being sold at a garage sale near us.
I am glad Phil mentioned my page. It fun watching others turn and I really enjoy Phil's work.
Thank you for watching and subscribing.
Gary
Just visited your channel after a shout out from Phil at Madronawoodworks. Just subbed, nice work
Thank you very much I appreciate it. And thanks to Phil he not only is a great wood turner he is a great guy.
Thanks again for watching and subbing.
Gary
Wow, such beautiful grain in that Macadamia wood, Gary! Your finish was perfect, too, really brings it out. This is your best video, to date! Congratulations on a fine turning, commentary, camera angles and outcome!
Phil
Thank you so much Phil. This is the best comment I have gotten to date.
I think the wood is so beautiful and rare for me I might just make smaller turnings out of all of it. If I make a bowl out
of the larger pieces I will have a lot of sawdust. Although it would be pretty for sure.
My videos are getting better because I am trying to do them similar to the way you do.
I also am going to copy getting some kind of turning smock. Although that has been on my mind for months. But
your recent video has pushed me to doing it. Oh.....I picked up some Howards Feed and Wax. I love it. Thanks for
bringing that to everyone's attention in your last few videos. Sure a lot thicker than I expected.
Thanks again Phil for your wonderful comments.
Gary
“I’m going to override that flip and go with Shellac, because that’s what I want to use!”
Sometimes I know what I want but just want to give my other finishes a chance.
There so many choices but that wood was begging for Shellac.
Eric thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Nice little box, Gary! I love the grain structure of Macadamia, but I've only turned pens from it. Great job!
Billy
Thank you Billy! I was lucky to come across the Macadamia log. My wife spotted bowl stock at a garage sale so I went along. I was able to pick up some choice turning wood. I only have turned one pen and that was at a friends on his lathe. Sure a good way to use up some small left over pieces of wood. And I can't throw anything away but I should.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I understand not throwing scraps away, Gary. But they do get used... eventually. LOL
Billy
Well those nice pieces of wood DON'T GROW ON TREES! Wait yes they do LOL
Must be an old guy thing I keep everything. I once had enough extra segmented disk from 3 different Dizzy bowls that I glued the miss matched disk together and made another bowl. Actually looked pretty good.
Gary
It's a beauty.
Thank you very much Rick.
Really nice piece Gary. The grain is amazing. I read below where you found it but that is rare wood for your area. Glad you have it.
Thank you Bill I am amazed with grain myself. The person I bought it from brought if from Hawaii. I also have some Plumaria I got from him.
I made a turning and the video is ok but since I bought the new HD camera I really hesitate to upload it. I do have one piece left and the other big piece of Macadamia left and I will do something with them soon.
Thanks again.
Gary
i'd like to get a hold of some of that .
I would like to find some more. The man I bought this from said he brought it here from Hawaii.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful!! Where do you find Macadamia wood?? Never seen it before👍👍
It grows in Hawaii but I got it at a garage sale. That person brought it from Hawaii.
I did a bigger bowl from oi and I have the other half left to do.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
It's native to Australia.
@@NoTaboos You are correct it is native to Australia. The fellow I bought it from brought it from Hawaii. I guess the commercial production in concentrated in Hawaii.
Not sure I said it only grows in Hawaii but if I did I sure did not mean to.
Beautiful piece, Gary ! Simple and wonderful, the basis of efficiency ^^ and the vase behind at 19:37 is amazing too !! did you turn it on video ? if yes, i'd be glad to see it, please send a link
Thank you I am glad you like it. Macadamia is such unique wood. Hard not to make something pretty out of it.
I made that vase before I started making videos so sorry no video of it. I am thinking on a few other vases though and will be sure to video them.
Thanks for your comments.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Oh yes, i love the grain and reflections of that wood... No problem for no video, but yeah, that's a pretty well made artwork ! i'm nowadays starting woodturning, and try to make it my everyday job, and i love the way you turn and talk about woodwork, very inspiring to me ^^ thx for your art and videos
@@rachrach8647 thank you very much. I love wood work and I worked as a wood pattern maker. We made the masters that were used to make metal castings. I turned some very larger pieces at work. You can see them if you look in my first videos. Only pictures as I was just dabbling in making videos.

I am glad you like the turning and talking. I have sort of talked to myself for ever when I am working on something.Thinking out loud I guess.
Thanks again for watching always great hearing from you.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 hahaha, thinking out loud, how far i can unsderstand you, i'm the same !! ^^ I just saw the other video, you didn't lie : that's a huge piece !! Thank you for sharing all this, a mine of informations and inspiration... Take care yourself too, Gary :)
Very nice work on a unusual wood you can see a 3d effect as it turns. Have you done a video on the vase in the background in the turntable shot it looks very very good with the tumbling pieces in the windows? brilliant work as always .
Thank you very much. I made that vase long before I started making videos. But I do have a few other videos with tumbling blocks.
