I purchased the kit off ebay and did everything shown on the video. Cleaned up rust the best I could to recondition welded areas and set mig at 4/30 to 4/40 setting. took extra care to make sure the top and end of each plate was welded securely to the frame and did my best with what was left on the bottom. Followed the same guidelines and wasn't too concerned about the rusted material left behind. Made sure I had a good weld on the round hole to the eyelet for the spring support. Did nothing outside of what was demonstrated here. Worked perfectly and very pleased with the outcome. Can't beat the price, paid $28 for the plates and added years to my 91 wrangler. Thank you, I wouldn't have done it if I hadn't seen this clip.
Glad that I could help, not that bad of a project one you get into it, Thanks for watching.
What's the measurements and angles of all the pieces?
Thank you. You just saved me a lot of money. I need to do the same repair to my 95YJ and each side was going to cost me $165.00 for premade brackets I was looking at I can now fix both sides for $59.00 with this kit from Amazon. Now I need to start practice welding. Thank you very much for your video.
Your Welcome! A bit long, I am glad that I could help. Stay safe and thanks for watching.
Please DO NOT do this yourself unless you KNOW exactly how to weld. Frame welding is not like making a pot holder or a sundial. This video shows the incorrect method for welding a frame.
Kieron Seymour-Howell How so?
I just used the same kit on my never driven in winter '87. I'm in NE so I know rust. My area was much smaller of course and I am doing a frame off, to begin with. Not a restoration just everything new possible. All that is left from the original is the sheet metal, frame, and front axle, which is no longer stock. I cut mine in with care so only I know it was done. I also welded closed every hole in the frame and Eastwood lined the inside. The only attachments now will be with sealed nutserts. The new motor mounds welded on for the 5.2.
Nice make sure you post
Nice video thanks for sharing. Always good to see people saving these instead of trashing them for some frame rust
Thanks, video could have been a bit shorter but come out ok, Thanks for watching.
Old metal still rusting underneath. This is only a temporary fix, the rust will continue to spread, The right way to do this would have been to remove the affected metal then clean the inside of the chassis rail the best you can before welding in clean metal and lastly using a red oxide rust inhibiting primer.
Great point!
With as much rust as that thing had, it's probably sitting in a scrap yard now. Didn't remove the cancer, just covered it up.
@@cw9825 you can live with cancer for a long time😂
I instantly thought to myself, “ that’s not a knife, that’s a machete.”😂
It’s great saving a vehicle from the scrap yard. Even if you get 2 or more years use out of it, look how much money you can save. The only thing I would of done different was to cut about the lower inch of rust off of the bottom and treat the rust to make it last longer. This is the way I would of done it. I’m not saying that my way would be better. I’m from Ohio, I see a lot of rusted frames. Fixed a few of my own. You did an excellent video on how to fix it. Keep up the good videos!
Thanks! it is still in good shape may do an update on it?
“Might need a bigger knife”.... as he is opening a package with a damn machete 😂😂😂
Now That's a Knife (: Thanks for watching.
We Just fixed my father in laws 86, It was way farther gone. We made our own parts from square tubing. And made the shock mount as well. Passenger side only. It worked great but took some time.
Obviously a very common dangerous problem as people are selling kits that you can get in the mail to remedy this. We had a Cherokee that we loved but it totally rusted out. Too bad as we used it for trail exploring and fishing trips. We don't do that anymore.
Thanks for watching.
Glad I came across this. I was about to spend $1,000 to have my 95 yj done.
Do it your self and save big bucks, Thanks for watching.
Dude whoops out a big ass machete to open the little package. Lol
(: it was hanging around so I used it (:
Always pull tank when you are that close.
Thanks for letting people know about the gas tank and fumes
(: be careful, thanks for checking it out.
Nice letter opener you got there
Question for you (or for experienced welders out here), would it have been better to cut the rusted part of the frame behind the welded metal plate ? just wondering cause I'll have a frame to repair.... thanks
Yes I am told that the right way to do it but this work for me and it a summer toy and still holding up fine.
Yes
that bottom plate with rectangle hole goes toward the back. it's a clean out hole for inside of frame
That frame is just gonna be rusted out again in less than a year lol. Plus the cancer wasn't removed, just covered up.
Hi Man! You have good job. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey, thanks! still in great shape
Now do mine!...nice job
(:
Love the letter opener haha
(:
I was thinking about doing this, the one concern I have is moisture get in-between the plate and the frame? This would cause it to rust out quicker I would think. Should you use Weld-Thru Primer in-between?
Sounds like a good Idea? never had used it will look into it.
Hello I didn't see any $59 in Amazon because I need this one side for my 1993 jeep yj frame the back driver
Not sure if you can only buy one side? link to what i have amzn.to/3AeH9dk
Would not cleaning up that rusted metal cause problems down the line?
That is what I understand but I did the best I could, not a restorations still holding up (: Thanks for watching.
I loved the unboxing w/matchety. Had to do this to my cj7 years ago, but no kit then. Had to make my own. Would've tirned out much nicer w/machine cut plates.
Funny, years ago it was illegal for you to fix your frame, a BIG no no. Maybe still illegal but sure seems ok to do nowadays. Had a 1980 toy sr4. Had to scap in 1990 cause the frame rotted behind the cab. Would have been a super easy fix. But, back then, in masshole, huge no no.
Thanks, not sure if its legal or not? this is my summer toy not my daily driver, so for the past 12 years it has not seen any snow, but the damage has been done, Thanks for watching.
Nice letter opener, dude.
Thanks (:
would have liked to see the section just beyond where you did this repair.. there was more rot up there but you did not show it on the video at the end.
No the frame was fine on the sides and top I could have cut them back but I wonted to replace the entire piece, Thanks for watching.
Excellent! Thank you.
You are welcome! I know that their are better ways of doing this but it is still holding strong, Thanks for supporting my channel.
I need to do this repair soon. I've only got the need to do one side though. But the one side I need to do is literally only holding ontop where the corner of the crossmember meets and the frame. Most of the crossmember is gone. I thought of buying this kit and using the extra pieces to repair the rear crossmember too. Any advice?
I would if you only need to replace one side use the extra to fix other problems, but that's me. thanks for watching.
Absolute life saver. Thank you very much. Beautiful job
* Were you able to fully weld without removing tank? (Yes I understand the hazard.)
Yes I did not have to remove tank, I felt confident that I was safe.
Looks great. Do they make a kit for the front as well?
Not that I am aware of?

www.amazon.com/dp/B07YSY7BS7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fbFhFb5PRM6C6
There's the front drivers and passengers
Now all that stress is going to be on those end welds holding the plates to the frame. And the rust isn’t cleaned up behind it. And rubberized coating allows water between the coating and metal unlike paint
Ill keep you up to-date, this is a summer jeep should last a bit.
Nice tidy work
Thanks. came out pretty good.
What welder are you using? I'm curious if the harbour frieght welder would work for small mounts like trailing arm mounts? or body panels? I have heard they can be decent welders if you get a feel for them and Get your feed speed just right I'm not a welder but I am interested to learn I know I also have read and seen people saying don't go anywhere near a car with one but not sure if they Had rational reasoning or not assuming It's not good for the Job? If anyone on here has input I'm all ears
I am using the Lincoln Electric I have had it for 26 years and abused it, great welder paid at that time around $600.00 have had to replace end at least once, am not using gas, tried it, much cleaner but the flex core works fine for me.as far as the harbor fright one, I have a friend that has one and he says it works fine.
@@channelron3593 I have definitely heard alot of people sugesting the Lincoln Electric I was just reading forums Reason I was asking I have some Rusty spots on my car towards the rear And the rear trailing arm mounts have rust all around them I think there's some pretty good metal around them though and I have seen alot of these videos of people getting some decent not too thick metal and welding it to the Near by structural points that havent been rusted yet kinda like inbyour video Though I am pretty sure the metal under this car is alot thinner So I was thinking maybe a smaller welder like the HF welder would work The area still feels pretty strong but I can see that Rust is going to eat out the mounts and turn the car into a throw away some people might already consider it one but aside from that rust its in pretty good condition all around
Alright, so does anyone who did this repair still have their jeep? If so, how we looking? I have to do this for my 89 yj.
Ya I still have it and it is holding up fine, maybe I will do an update.
What welder/Flux did you use for the repair. Just looking at welders to do my frame and body work. Any recommendations?
Yes, I have had a Lincoln MIG Welder since 1993 and before that, I tried junk and had to learn the hard way, pay the extra money and get a good welder. I have used gas and it is cleaner but I like the flex core because I transport my welder a lot and I like the portability but if you are going to keep it stationary in your shop you may want gas.
What kind of place do this kind of work? Good job by the way.
"SAF T CAP" CRANSTON RHODE ISLAND BEST REPAIR KITS ANYWHERE ALREADY WELDED INTO A PIECE AS WELL
Did the original shackles fit onto the tube after new plates? I have the same issue on my 94 YJ, thanks for the "how to".
yes they fit with no problems.
@@channelron3593 Thanks for the reply.
Nice job,very informative
Thanks man, I got a lot of use out of your video
I am glad, was not sure if I showed enough information, Thanks and thanks for watching.
I was wondering about the body mounts step. I’m going to try this with no experience working on a Jeep. What’s involved in removing the mounts and it looks like you raised the body off the frame. Is that so and if so, how?
I did them on my jeep was not bad, wish I had done a video on it maybe I will talk about how I did it, Thanks for watching.
Question why not cut out the rot to prevent future rot ?
Not sure just thought it would be fine.
Channel Ron thought wrong. Rust spreads if not taken care of properly. You did a great job on the welding and definitely will pass an inspection now, however, that rust internally will grow. The paint will start bubbling as it spreads.
R J lol
Should round the corners on plates ,keeps the welds from stress
Thanks will keep that in mind on the next project, Thanks for checking it out.
do you think i can AC stick weld this and if so what rod are you thinking i should use?
Sure a stick will work long before I used a Mig i used a stick.
@@channelron3593 thank you sir :-)
Very good video I have a 95 yj I need to do that to your video helps
Thanks came out OK, Thanks for watching.
Thanks, I enjoyed that.
What undercoating product did you use? How did it hold up since applying in august of 2017? Thanks
I just used rustoleum oil based paint from lowes and has been holing up fine. this is fare weather jeep and only use in summer. Thanks for watching.
Thanks! I just ordered some Fluid Film - looks like if you re-apply it every year or so it will hold up pretty well. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews on the rubberized undercoating so decided for the cost Fluid Film was worth a shot. Appreciate the response, might have changed my mind had I not just ordered the other stuff haha. New Hobart Handler 140 welder showed up today and lift should be here tomorrow - ready to get going for spring!
Miles Hayes I use fluid film religiously. I live west of Buffalo NY in the rustiest of the rust belt and all of my cars get complements from my inspection mechanics. Fluid film is an excellent moisturizer too. Rub it in, don't wipe it off.
What kind of paint is that? It looks amazing.
I just used oil base paint, have used it on other projects and seems to hold up ok.
i'm concerned about welding near the gas tank i own a 2003 tj that needs some frame work
Did you seriously do all that welding with the fuel tank still in the vehicle a few inches away, pretty sure the instructions say to remove the tank
Do I need to wear a visor while watching the welding parts?
No you are fine. thanks for wachting.
Where do you put the jack to work on the frame? Or don't you need to?
I used the harbor fright scissors lift, you could use jack stands
I just did one, we put the jack stands on the frame in front of the rear wheels on flat cinder blocks.
Hey did you use gas or flux
Flux its not as nice work but I was happy with it.
How this is the plate you using
I believe it was 3/8
Holy letter opener lol
Now that"s a knife (:
You’ve done all that great work looks really really good why not just put some rust eater on first before new panels then that’s done for as long as the cars on road . If your restoring it or not but great job other than the rust eater first thumbs up
Not sure why I did not, thanks for the heads up (: will look into it.
Is this driver side or passager side
Driver side, Passenger side was not bad, Thanks for watching.
How did this hold up?
Great! I am not a rock climber or mud driving just a toy not sure how it would hold up to that kind of punishment, but I would not have any worries trying I think its fine.
thanks vary helpful
Thanks, I think I could have shorten it up a bit, Thanks for watching.
Hey does anyone know if you can just bolt it on just wondering bz I do not have a welder to use and garages I asked are trying to make me pay an extra 300-400???
Nothing “bolted on” is going to fix frame rot. You should look around the area for welders. They have their own equipment and some will travel to your location. It’s best/cheaper if you do the prep work. I had this done to a 93 YJ. Used the more expensive ($160 for 1 piece) part. It was just a sleeve that slipped over the bad section. I removed all the parts and dropped the fuel tank. Cut away all the rust and ground it down to bare metal. Welder showed up, took a few measurements, trimmed the sleeve and welded it on. Charged me $70. I’m going to do the same with my ‘89 YJ
Did you use flux core wire?
Yes that is why it spatters, I tried the gas and it is cleaner but I am happy with the flux core, Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the content.
was OK could have shorten it up a bit, Thanks for watching.
I am currently using 030 flex-core, yes weld to chassis then weld bottom plate to new plate, once you start it will make better scene to you, make sure you clean your metal, good luck and thanks for watching.
You're right, it makes sense once you start. Got one side done this weekend. As a mediocre welder at best I found it extremely difficult to make some of the welds, particularly on top towards the back end. Working off jack stands doesn't make it easier. I would suggest removing the fuel tank as well. But your video is exactly how you do it.
now for the rest of the frame.....
its a far wether jeep now so should last a little longer, thanks for watching.
@@channelron3593 hey do you have a good way to remove frame to body moynt bolts? i welded up frame no probs then went to remove body bolts with a thin cutoff wheel which jammed and shot back into my forearm. 20 stiches later im trying to figure out how to remove them. have a plasma cutter?
Ahh the ole "B" tank
anyone know if i can find the same kit for a tj?
This is all I could find amzn.to/2sNYJnY
The prep work was horrible. What about cutting the old rust rotted metal out.?
You should I did not, I only put 120 miles on this last year just a toy but it still holding up fine will do an update later, thanks for checking it out.
To b honest the sad thing about the U.K. Is no one seems to want to weld anymore
Still a need for it around hear, thanks for watching.
Gloves and mechete to open a package🙄🤦
Sadly, I regret to say, you should NEVER use a MIG welder on a frame. You need to use a SMAW method and use the correct electrodes. But, the video is GREAT!, and interesting otherwise. :)
Thanks,
Kieron Seymour-Howell todays mig welders have plenty of power to penetrate metal and produce a very strong weld. Stick welding with proper electrodes may be a better alternative because of the condition of the frame but under normal street conditions this repair will outlast the driver nevermind the vehicle.
Jimmy, it is not about power. You really need to learn about a topic before you wade in with your armchair expertise. I was a certified welder, and I've had this debate with many mechanics, wonder-welders, and self-taught lazies over the years. It all boils down to the fact they simply do not understand what they think they know. Save yourself some effort and drop it. Better yet, now that you know, spend your efforts to go and find out exactly why. If you can.
are you able to explain why? Because you're pretty much full of crap.
Kieron Seymour-Howell so you don’t actually know? you just typed out that long run on sentence LOL 😂. Why, please tell the classroom why you can’t mig weld a Chassis.
Rule#1 machete/knife, always cut AWAY from self.
Got it (: Thanks for watching.
Thank you Internet OSHA safety director! Sheesh....
Old video but i 10000% disagree with everything you did here... Ive done repairs like this on my FSJ jeeps wagoneer, j10, and even my ZJ's.. but you gatta cut out the old stuff, use those plates to weld into the old spot you cut out essentually replacing the section of frame....... what you did is a bandaid and now the rusty frame behind it, will fester, and rust faster and push on the plates buldging them and rusting it 10x faster itll also crack on the top and bottom eventually..... Ive had to fix "repairs" others did exactly like you on my wagoneer, if they did it right the first time i wouldnt have had to do it a 2nd time the proper way.. You didnt even paint or coat the metal behind the plates either.. or clean them up you just welded right over and painted the new metal..
This is all 100% wrong.. You didnt even clean the rest of the frame before you painted...cmon man... if you can weld you can do it the right way
Should have dropped the tank. Don't do this at home kids.
this is the absolute wrong way to do this! bandaid fix. if you dont completely remove the rust it will just eat what you welded. only time id ever consider doing a repair like this is if i wanted to sell it and cheat someone.
Ouch, well I do better next time (: so far I am happy with it, thanks for watching.
Lol machete!!
Now that's a knife, LOL Thanks for watching.
