I lived at three different homes/properties in Leilani Estates through out the 1990's. Beautiful subdivision. One of the homes covered by Pele was my friend Gary's on Luana Street.

Probably the best tour of lava fissures I have seen, great closeups and drone views. Mahalo.

Hearing the lava crunch underfoot is unnerving.

Very cool. Is he planning to go back and rebuild when it cools off? I would think those cracks, if filled with mulch, would be great for planting trees in!

I'm not sure if he plans to rebuild, I doubt it. Those cracks radiate heat sometimes up to 200 degrees, so plants and trees would get burned up. Plus some of them are up to 40 feet deep.

@@LifeontheBigRock I meant when it all cools down. He's got a gorgeous place. I'd throw up a small cottage and call it a day. Maybe even a tiny home on wheels, "just in case" That way if it happens again, he can tow his house out of there.

Are these cracks like the ones at Lava Tree Park?

    Sulphur is not white....

You're right. Pure sulphur is yellow. The white material seen is due to gypsum, which is a material containing sulphur (gypsum is calcium sulfate), and is usually present along with pure sulphur in volcanic eruptions. In fact, the famous Sulphur Banks at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are mostly white due to the predominance of gypsum, along with lesser amounts of sulphur.
