    I believe he should be able to try & save his home as long as he does not divert it into someone else's doing so.

    "If you respect she go round" Pele didn't go around Kalapana did she...she wiped out all the local Hawaiians homes. You going to sit there and watch her do it again? You can change the direction, it's been done. Come on people show her the way to the ocean.
    Alfred Lee is a hero. He saved his home as well as his neighbors.

    Saying that Pele will circumvent those that respect her is shameful victim-blaming, whether you believe in her or not. It's like saying people who die of cancer didn't pray hard enough.
    Great video, very thorough. What an insane and fascinating issue!

      cableguy316 It's straight racism. The underlying insinuation is that white people don't respect the land therefore they deserve to get their house burnt down and diversion isn't justified to save da fuckin haoles house.

    In the case of Pahoa barriers did work because the 2014-2015 eruption was mild and so was easier to divert. The problem is the suggestion that it's a one-size-fits-all solution, because barriers do not work for larger scale and fluid eruptions like the 2018 Puna eruption, the 1990 Kalapana eruption, and especially the 1960 Kapoho eruption (which did employ similar barriers that ultimately failed to protect the intended properties), not to mention it being more dangerous when there are active fissures nearby. What "Berm Guy" and other neighbors did at Pahoa may not work in and around Leilani Estates.
    Never mind the religion. There are now enough people on the Internet who derive their knowledge of eruptions from wonky information from social media and pop culture, and simply do not grasp the potential force of lava flows, going around expressing misinformation and impractical ideas that they think can protect from lava flows. So whenever I read about people complaining about why authorities don't set up barriers around the Puna Geothermal Venture plant (which is right next a couple of active fissures), I cringe. They're more delusional than the people who believe in Pele.

    So if you are not supposed to try to divert the lava to protect your home, do those people who say that also not try to protect their homes when mother nature sends a hurricane or rainstorm? Do they not try to protect their property by boarding up their windows, etc?

      Mysticism is strong on Big Island. Like in ancient times, storms or droughts get attributed to the "gods". It is a weird balance since it is a modern society with modern infrastructure but the cultural revival has shifted more into reverting back to those old ideologies. They want to shun the modern world but should instead be trying to integrate.

    Good for that man trying to do something to save his home. The officials don't seem willing to do anything to stop it just tell you where it might be headed. A cement wall could be poured to divert the flow...but some-thing could be done to stop it or redirect it. Do something ! Pele..oh please. Pele doesn't have anything to do with it.

    I guess the Icelandic lava god is ok with that... 🤔

  • @dashi1713
    @dashi1713 6 років тому

    They changed the course of it in the 80s when the volcano was erupting then and it was heading to Hilo and they air striked it to make it go another way. Not saying it should happen but just saying Pele’s or gods will is a bad/lazy excuse. The only good excuse was that the government doesn’t know where the lava will flow if it is diverted.

    This is the same old problem of development in areas that are prone to disasters (like near lava fields and on earthquake faults) and should not be developed in the first place.
    The lava will just keep coming and eventually spill over the top of the berm, consume the home, then go on down to the next plot of populated land.

    • @watchgoose
      @watchgoose 6 років тому

      lava is porous and can be bulldozed at some point and cleared away from the berm.

    Ha. Funny, all these hysterical, superstitious, semi-illiterate folks. Not saying "diversion" is practical. But, to totally rule it out and say it's not even worth considering-while personifying the lava and speaking of "Pele" in remarkably unscientific terms-is almost humorous. I'm not trying to disrespect people for their beliefs. But neither should they disrespect me for having beliefs that are different. Opinions are like ... well, a part of our anatomy; everybody has one. I think referring to "Pele" as a personal entity is hilarious. Good luck with your superstition.

    aloha to those who know about Pele in Hawai'i yes she has been seen by Hawaiians and visitors as well and I can't explain it, but its so eerie but the volcano that opened up last week now many fissures I do believe that Pele is angry at something. I was told if any one does not respect Pele and honor her she will take revenge, and destroy. also told if any Haole that's a Caucasian person, respects her and anyone who offers her bottle of Gin wrapped in taro leaves and throw it to her she will accept it. but rumor is that Pele wants all white people to leave Hawaii big island, she is reclaiming it to herself and her people the Hawaiians only, no one else, ok I cannot predict that to be true or what because I am not Hawaiian to say this for sure.i have lived in Hawaii on the island of Oahu for 9 years and never seen big island, true I miss Hawaii a lot. but If I were anyone on the island I would caution those to be very careful. and do respect Pele and her people of Hawaii.and do what they can to protect lives and neighbors and stand together, I won't try to predict anything, since I am not Hawaiian. I love the Hawaiian people and their paradise, and my heart goes out to all of you there. who are on the island, take care and be careful stay safe
