That pyramid was originally a sports arena that failed.
Johnny Morris, the owner of Bass Pro Shops, also owns resorts, golf courses as well as the hotel chain.
Yes, the bigger locations do have indoor shooting ranges AND archery ranges. The granddaddy store here in Springfield, Missouri does. Also attached to it is the Wonders of Wildlife Museum and Aquarium. The Angler's Inn hotel is across the street. What is crazy about Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas (now owned by Bass Pro) is that because of how big their stores are their parking lot could be full of cars and the store with hundreds of people, but once you get past the fish tanks you often find yourself rather secluded in the shop. Even in the middle of Las Vegas with their Bass Pro there were so many people, yet I could shop in complete peace without bumping into a single person's shoulders the entire time outside of trying to see the big fish in the tanks.

The pyramid has been around a long time and it used to be a hotel and exhibition hall. One of the earliest and coolest exhibitions they did was hosting the Ramses the Great tour and they set it up like you were in a royal tomb. They even changed the crosswalks, roadsigns, everything outside to hieroglyphics and ancient Egyptian designs. The last exhibition was the great Renaissance works and Medici family. After that, the pyramid closed and sold to Bass Pro, which is neat and I enjoy shopping BP, but I miss the incredible exhibitions to be honest.

Being from Memphis, the whole debacle of the Pyramid construction was nuts. A man named Sidney Slinker embezzled lots of the money, then the acoustics of the place once it did open were horrible, saw Van Halen, Alice In Chains as first show there, the sound bounced everywhere, you would hear every sound like 3 or 4 times. The first time I went was it's opening exhibit, Rameses the Second, during Memphis In May celebration the year it saluted Egypt. Fitting the first thing there was a Pharaoh I guess. I have heard they were or are planning on making a ride that went up and down on the exterior, from the top down into The Mississippi River, and the car you sat in would be shaped like a fishing lure.

About a month or so after the 109 pound blue was caught a 143-pound 44-inch girth blue catfish (the current world record holder) was also caught in the lake behind my house. It did not survive to end up in some aquarium. Bass Pro Shops and the Tony Stewart Foundation have contributed over $1 million dollars to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Bass Pro Shops relationship with NASCAR began in 1998 when Morris sponsored the legendary Dale Earnhardt in the Winston All-Star Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte. On its website, Bass Pro Shops revealed its sponsorship schedule for Dillon and Truex during the 2024 NASCAR season. Truex will be sponsored by Bass Pro Shops in 25 races, including the Busch Light Clash last weekend and All-Star Race, while Dillon has 12 races.

I’ve learned a lot over the years, they made a special crane with a porta potty to install sound baffles.
I was there when they broke the floor up to make those creeks.
The elevator was originally intended but never installed and climbing those stairs really suck.

Johnny Morris, the man who owns all the Bass Pro Shops Is a cooler human being than the shops themselves. He sponsors a lot of NASCAR teams and other forms of motorsports. The Bass Pro near me in Palm Bay Florida is nothing as big as this shop, but you get that same amusement park feel. It's pretty neat.

It has real gators and fish and sharks and an option to even get in a cage in the water with a shark and you can pet stingrays
    Definitely worth going to see

If you want to get into a bit of horror, check out the scenarios of a new major earthquake on the New Madrid fault.
The last major ones in 1811-1812 were so severe, the Mississippi River flowed backwards (and it's a huge river) and even created a huge lake.
Another one like that would likely absolutely devastate Memphis and many other areas. California has earthquakes frequently so building codes address them. Not the case in these areas.

Been in Memphis for a long time and the Pyramid is MASSIVE. I’ve been inside several times as a sports venue and for concerts and events. One of the problems they had with the Pyramid is the acoustics. Anyway, the island you saw is Mud Island and yes those are houses, townhouses and such. Very expensive to live there and tends to have issues with flooding when the river is high. Memphis has several great attractions. When you come to the US, be sure to stop by.

It has an indoor gun range and an archery range. The glass wall/windows in the top restaurant can open when the weather is nice o have an "outdoor" dining experience. I have stayed in the hotel and the rooms have the same rustic cabin feel, but are very upscale with a small piano bar and a chess area for hotel guests only. When the store closes, you cannot get into it as a hotel guest but your balcony looks out into the store with a screen for privacy and to give the feel of being in a southern swap.

The original purpose of the pyramid was for the series of Wonder’s Exhibitions we had many moons ago. The first exhibition was for Ramsee’s II. A Titanic exhibition was there and one on Russia (czars?). Once the exhibitions ended, it was empty for awhile and then turned into a basketball arena.
The state line with Arkansas is 1/2 way over the Memphis-Arkansas bridge. That’s I-40 that runs over the bridge which transverses most of the states from east to west.

Bass Pro is everything you can do outdoors and everything you'll need to do it comfortably. Not just fishing poles but all the accessories, clothing, safety equipment and the boats designed for the type of fishing you want to do. Camping, tents, coolers, sleeping bags, survival gear, medical kits, Camping grills, cots & air mattresses, dishes, generators, heaters, camp furniture etc When it comes to hunting you'll need to pick what type to list the supplies they carry. Archery, guns, blinds, tree stands, supplies to build and grow food plots for the type of animals you want to come, game calls, decoys, backpacks and every other type of pack, and of course all the other things that go along with hunting like knives (fishing, skinning, meat processing etc) scent blockers and lures etc etc. They also have outdoor recreation like canoes, bikes, toys, metal detectors, ATV accessories, boats, trailer accessories like hitches, wheels, jacks, lights etc etc. They sell Nascar T-shirts and hats, model cars, flags, cups and coolers etc. They support Nascar and sponsor a car and several drivers. Half the fun of Nascar is the Tailgating party and Basspro sells everything you need to make a Tailgating blast of a party! Basically, if you want to do something outside your home, Basspro has everything you'll need or want from the socks and shoes on your feet to whatever equipment you'll need and how to eat and sleep there if your not going back into your home that night. Camping in the backyard with the kids or on some remote mountain trail, they'll have it or be able to order it in as not every store is big enough to hold it all. They even sell Satellite phones in case you plan to go where cell phone signals are non existent.

Wife and I stayed the night at the hotel in there several years ago. I want to say we were in the Uncle Buck room. Extra cool! A little scary at the top of the pyramid, you are WAY up there. Also, we live near the Bass Pro mothership in Springfield MO and, yes, they sell/repair guns and they do have an indoor shooting range but I’m guessing it’s only a handgun range. But that’s a guess. The pyramid hotel is extra cool but the Springfield store kicks things up a notch with the Wonders of Wildlife museum. Definitely a must see! Good job, Johnny Morris! And BPS has a NASCAR racer so they do have NASCAR stuff.

I live in downtown Memphis, TN. Grew up in this city, and saw many a concert at The Pyramid, long before its transformation into Bass Pro. There is a restaurant at the top of the building. Oh, but stay out of the water downstairs, in case you mess up and accidentally dip a toe into the tank with the alligators. You would not enjoy that. BTW, the fudge at the General Store is awesome. And don't forget the rest of the classic goodies in the candy shop. I can also get really good shoes there that double for comfy footwear in the office. Sometimes, I just like to peruse the boats and kayaks, dreaming. One day....
