Every year, volunteer ranchers head to South Dakota's Custer State Park to round up the country's largest bison herd. Chip Reid reports on the thrilling spectacle.
@@insomb Every year in places like the Badlands national park, Wind Cave national park, the Black hills of South Dakota, and as seen in this video Custer state park game animal (bison, elk, deer, and feral mustang specifically) numbers consistently exceed carrying capacity meaning that their grazing could degrade the ecosystem for smaller animals or the health of the herds could be compromised that's why all of these places either have yearly culls or yearly roundups, to keep the herds at an environmentally manageable and healthy size. Normally predators like wolves, grizzlies, and cougars would manage the herd sizes and feeding behaviors of game animals but most, if not all, of these large predators have been extirpated from most of America's grasslands leaving no natural way of keeping prey numbers in check. This was the ultimate reason for reintroducing grizzly bears and wolves back into Yellowstone in the 70s and late 90s respectively.
There used to be millions of bison on the plains. You telling me several thousand are overpopulated? Idk maybe the 100 million cattle and 330 million humans in the US are overpopulated. But only god knows at this point :/
Consequently the American natives would have to give back all the horses, all the firewater, all the rawfles and all the V8 trucks and snowmobiles to the whities! And no longer big revenues from white gamblers. Forget it!
We wouldn't have a problem, doing that. As long as we get back our land, our way of life, our health, because you brought disease to our land. Furthermore, as long as we get back our thousands upon thousands of people, that you have massacred and murdered. Yes, you can have back, everything that you have mentioned and also, your alcohol, your junk food and prostitution practices. Yes, please leave our land, you were never invited. You are invaders, thieves, and looters. And by the way, on your way out, take your turkey and diseases, back with you to Europe. I have spoken, and it is indisputable and undeniable, because it is the truth.
The Murican problem: you, the Muricans slaughtered the bisons in the 19th century (that's where the years begin with "18..."), not in the 18th century (where the years begin with "17..."). Can anybody send a 4th grade teacher to CBS? Lolllllll
most people don't understand the base ten counting system, 1st century= year 0 ( yes year zero) thru 99, 2nd century 100 ( see the zero again in the first year of the second century) 199, so see 2nd century years don't start with a 2 boys and girls, see how easy that is?
The slaughter did start in the eastern states during the 18th Century. Prior to that, bison spanned from Florida to Pennsylvania. Most of these were gone by 1800, leaving isolated stragglers for the next couple of decades. Then came the slaughter of the Great Plains herds that everyone is familiar with.
Get real and read your history books. With very few exceptions like the Miwok and Mountain Shoshone. The Indians were a warrior class constantly engaged in intertribal warfare. And, yes they took slaves such asSacajawea and Quanah Parker. While slaughtering Buffalo was part of the genocide, all you have to do is hang around the Rez to know they are no angels. However if the BIA could give them full ownership of their land they would prosper like any other people.
Bryce Bertolino yeah, but are you trying to suggest we were better off with the Europeans coming here? Are you forgetting that wars happened in Europe too?!
If they get to over populated, that means they need predators. Much like wild horses, they need their major predators: wolves, bears and big cats.
So true!!
They're not gonna get overpopulated, there's 1/30th of the population. They need left alone.

@@jojrab5207 True but they need the predators regardless for it to be a complete ecosystem.
This was not fake news.
Wow
When the herd becomes to big, maybe they can hunt down some humans and take nature back!
Good idea!
Leave the bison alone!
Give America back to its native owners! They will help bisons for sure.

What do you mean give back they never owned it.
you know the American Indians drove the majority of the American Bison species to extinction right?.

He said eighteen hundreds which is correct.

Bryce Bertolino yeah, but are you trying to suggest we were better off with the Europeans coming here? Are you forgetting that wars happened in Europe too?!
shut up Bryce
But they never went to another country and killed 90% of the local population, no excuses for that.
