For many Native Americans, the restoration of buffalo/bison is as much about healing people and reviving our culture as it is about healing the land. Bison once roamed the US prairie in millions, and had a close affinity with Native populations who used them for sustenance, health, homes, preservation of ecosystems, etc. After colonists moved in, many of them were killed for sport, or even intentionally to subjugate Native populations. There are several efforts ongoing in the nation to improve bison population and 'rewild' them by slowly introducing packs into the wild. This has been done successfully in Montana and Oklahoma.

Nothing will give back what was taken, but it's wonderful to see that people are recognising what was done and are trying to do _something_ to help the future of these people. Every culture deserves to be able to flourish, as long as it doesn't harm anyone. Roaming with buffalo is not going to harm anyone and it's something which should be supported. I hope that this programme helps to return at least some of that which was lost. I wish them all well ♥️

From a long term economic point of view it also was a terrible blunder to decimate the bison, since it could have been a reliable source of meat(protein) for generations to come without the capital intensive practices of agriculture on the Great Plains, and therefore without the environmental damage that was brought upon that region.

Just a question, since the native buffalo were practically wiped out, are there sufficient blood lines in the existing animals to be able to build up sustainable populations?
Much success to you in your efforts to reestablish the buffalo.
    Best Wishes from the UK.

It wasn't just the bison that got slaughtered, you could also look at the wolves, grizzly bears, prairie dogs, (the prairie itself), and many marine species too that were killed in huge numbers. The mindset back then was to kill anything that was in the way or could be sold. Sad legacy.

As A Mcmac Indian I am with the Quawpaw Nation. I live here in region 9 of Western New York and I see many Native Plants disappearing that my Grandparent's & relatives from Maine would consider medicinal plants. The Elderberry the Red Rasberry, & when they cleaned the sides of the 2 & 4 mile roads they took out the Wild Blackberries that our Bear population would depend on. Everybody around here are afraid of Bears. But when I was Younger I had a Timber Wolf as a pet. That's what they did in Yosemite to keep certain populations in check. And to protect or to keep Large Predators @ bay. Or confined to there Territory... Now there worried about the Whitetail Deer. I say run a lottery to allow us or people of low income to bowhunt in certain areas were the city feels these animals are becoming a menace.

The term Indian in reference to Native Americans, actually originated due to Columbus actual thought North America was India, due to that both North and Sounth America wasn’t on European maps, back in the day and Columbus was sent out to find a faster way to get to India for the spice trade.

The Comache killed off a lot of buffalo to fund their invasion of Mexico. It's clear to me that if every native tribe had access to guns and horses there would not be a single buffalo left.
Truth be told the natives of America, Europe, Asia, the Pacific and Australia did in nearly all the large mammals, mostly with just just sticks, stones and fire.
