Hi friends! Today, let's take a slightly different path and examine how to write in a chorale style for woodwinds and brass. With so many colours at our disposal, what's the best way to approach this? Let's dive in.

I guess I am a product of another era. When I started writing for woodwinds, brass and strings there were no samplers. Back in high school in the late 60’s I started by transcribing parts from Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears albums for my band. I was a drummer so I first had to learn how to read and write music. I then moved to transcribing big band charts scoring all the parts. One had to learn the ranges of all the instruments and how to write out the parts. Up a major second for trumpet, a major 6th for alto sax, major 9th for ten or sax, alto clef for violas, etc. one had to have basic knowledge. Now people want to jump in without putting the work. Even though I have a degree in music composition (almost 45 years ago I really enjoy your videos and channel.
Hey Ted, thanks for sharing. Indeed, many people want to get right in and get their hands dirty! It's okay that they might not know certain things; it's my and other educator's jobs to share what we know :) Appreciate you watching!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Harmonic Series Video saved the day Chris... :D Now everything is based on that, woodwinds/strings/brass.... you enlightened it with the last video!!!
Thanks!
My pleasure Viktor! Indeed, it’s always best to start with the foundation :) look forward to Monday’s video!
I like how this video builds upon the previous one. Very useful and inspiring. Thank you and stay safe!
Glad you enjoyed it! :D
awesome tutorial
Thank you!
Been waiting for composing tips from you Chris! thank you for this. just take your time and keep uploading what comes to your mind.
You got it! My pleasure.
Amazing video Chris. Thank you!
My pleasure!
Very nice Christopher! Loved it. I cant read notes but im making orchestral music. Your tutorials helps me a lot! Thanks for that!!
You're very welcome!
Beautiful, how you figured out the individual melody lines for each instrument. You inspired me to try this as well with a woodwind section.
I am proud that I heard from your channel after watching the Q&A video with Dirk Ehlert, you and other guys.
Thank you Karsten! Good luck trying it on your own, and let us know how you get along with it!
@@ChristopherSiu Hi Christopher, this morning one question came to my mind. Let us imagine you have used woodwinds and brass together in one approach. Would you use two of each instrument again and doubling the melody lines?
Thanks again Chris for more of these informational videos, always inspiring. I'm hoping you continue this with other orchestral instruments.
More to come! Thanks :)
Amazing! Thank you for allowing me to see your work and thought process. It was very honest and inspirational, especially since you finally achieved exactly the kind of musical outcome you set out to. I really appreciate getting to see and hear that.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Awesome man, great content!
Appreciate it man! Hope you're doing well :)
@Chris I have a non-music related question. What software, camera, microphone, etc. do you use in creating your videos? After watching the interview with you and Graham, the idea wheels in my head have been working overtime.
Hey Jon, I've got just the thing for you: ua-cam.com/video/ayBagomn8UQ/v-deo.html
Way cool, i need more videos like this 🤗
More to come!
Great lesson! Thanks for showing us these techniques! May I suggest that besides labeling your different tracks (thank you!), also assign different colors to the MIDI regions. In addition, I know Logic can display different colors per part (instead of velocity) in the Editor window. Especially that one would make the job of following along so much easier! Thanks again! Cheers!
Great suggestion! Thanks for watching :)
@@ChristopherSiu - You are welcome, my friend!
dont forget if you are writing sheet music, clarinet trumpet and horns are transposing instruments.
Question on breathing. When you write an orchestral score do you try to have the entire orchestra "breathe" at the same time, or do you "stagger" the breathing between instruments, or is it somewhat dependent on the arrangement, and effect you wish to achieve?
Great question Joe, and a wonderful idea for a new video! I think it depends entirely on the arrangement. If we’re sustaining a long chord with woodwinds, for example, they can certainly do that, but I’ll need to write in breath marks where one flute breathes while the other doesn’t, or one section breathes while the rest sustain. We can call this stagger breathing, if you will. In any case, I try to have them breathe in a place most natural for the phrase.
Thank you Chris . This has been super helpful indeed . My music theory is very basic but your explanations are really easy to follow and make sense to me even though being a total beginner. Have you got a music theory course? You're a natural born teacher and I like your calm approach! Thanks for helping us starter uppers .Much appreciated!
Thanks so much Christian! Yes I do in fact, here it is: christophersiu.podia.com/879352bb-9d2b-423e-9830-74a5f72fb7b8
@@ChristopherSiu Hi and thank you very much for your reply . I'm looking forward to this course! .Unfortunately I cannot afford it at the moment since covid has lowered my income so much. So as it stands I'll have to wait a little until I'm able to work full time again. But as soon as I'm able to I will sign up for sure!!! . Its terrible here in London at the moment with the pandemic and obviously it is a huge challenge and sadness for everyone across the globe ! Stay safe
Best wishes
Christian
PS . I've subscribed and will spread the word about your awesome work . !!!!! Until soon
@@ChristopherSiu Hi Chris . Changed my mind and bought it anyways .What the heck . Learning is so much more important .!!! You cant take it £$ with you right ! Cant wait to get started . Cheers and best wishes again

Haha glad to have you on board Christian! You know where to find me if you have any questions :)
@@ChristopherSiu Cheers to that!:) Glad to be on board !!!!
Chris great video!! if i may suggest- try using different region colors and multiselect different regions from instruments u want to harmonize and u can tell logic midi editor to color each instrument notes by their region color instead of velocity. that way, u do t have to go back and forth between regions while harmonizing and is a great tool to illustrate your concepts on a video: love your content and the concepts! i am also enjoying your course!
Thanks for the tip! And so glad you’re enjoying the course!
Hello Chris! This video was very helpful. Also, the link to your course appears to be broken. Are you still offering it?
Thank you Raymond! My apologies, I just fixed the link. Best part is, you can grab the course for 40% off until midnight EST tonight!!
Hey Chris, do you remember what this chord progression is? Would appreciate it.
Hey Plectro, it's Eb Bb7/D Cm Eb/Bb AbM7 Bb7 Eb Dhalfdim7 G7 Cm Cm/Bb F7/A Fm/Ab Bb13 EbM7.
Nice!
Thanks!
Christopher Siu No problem!

@@ChristopherSiu thanks bro. 😊 you helped me
Christopher Siu what is the benefits of having kontakt full? Can I still get away with using kontakt player? Do large libraries like Metropolis ark and cinematic strings need kontakt full?
@@keiphilinstrumental2017 You're welcome!
@@peanutbutter1998 Honestly you can get away with a lot with just the Kontakt player. The full version allows you access to every single Kontakt-based library, while the player only works with the libraries where the developer paid NI to have their library with in the player version. The Arks and CSS do not need full Kontakt.
Hi Chris, wondering what your thoughts are on Cinewinds? Lately I have been wanting to finish a library all from the same recorded space, and Cinesamples might be the closest for me to finish...just need winds and brass. Wanted your take on it.. Thanks.
Hi Jake, I enjoy Cinewinds for more exposed solo lines, as they're very expressive and sound great in the Sony room. Good luck!
@@ChristopherSiu I would have to imagine that they would blend well in an orchestration with the other Cinesamples libraries though no? I only ask because I know you have a lot of their libraries and have probably tried that. Thanks.
@@jaketanner109 Yes, I would say so. The overall quality of the Cinesamples libraries is more upfront and center, so the winds have the same quality.
@@ChristopherSiu thank you
