- Here at E39Source, we have converted a dozen or so BMW E60 5-series models from automatic/SMG transmissions to 6-speed manuals. These include pre and post facelift 545is, 550is, and M5s. Our team was very excited to tackle this M6- the first 6 series that we have converted!

I suggest you try to print with a 3D resin printer and ABS resin for smooth finish and no need for sanding. I have had great results with Creative Halot-One resin 3D printer.
Yes. It would look almost factory with resin without any post processing

Way to go dude! Stoked to see this. Especially the edc button trim. Planning to swap my m6 in the coming future and I already acquired mostly everything last year and would love to acquire that 3d printed panel!
Btw as I imagine you will probably do another one of these… for the switch panel, you can pickup a e63/e64 non m switch panel and remove the dsc or dtc (pending year) and transpose it over to the m6 switch panel. Or probably just use the non m switch panel. That’s what I’m going to be doing because like you said, the m6 version is nla or was hilariously priced and just isn’t worth it.
Time did not allow for that additional step on this project, but that will be my plan for the future! Good luck with your conversion. We hope to have these trim panels available on E39Source.com before the end of Q1 this year.

I think I paid more attention to the stirling grey e39 next to the M6 lol.
Awesome work as always, Ryan. I fear these parts availability woes will only become more prevalent as time goes on, and the pandemic seemed to hasten the process.
Really wish BMW would wise up and offer support for their legacy models like Porsche does. They seem more interested these days in launching designer "M" SUVs for the Chinese market, though.
I couldn't agree more. Parts availability is going to become a huge problem very soon, and I am not sure how much longer these conversions will be possible.
Do you guys do DCT conversions for these cars as well?
Not at this time, no. I don't see the DCT as an upgrade to the SMG.

The N62 V8 transmissions will not work. You need the GS653BZ manual from either the E9x M3 or 6-speed M5/M6 (good luck finding those).

Hey Ryan - pinged you on BMW E60 M5 conversion video - so i take it you used a 6 spd E9x M3 S65 gearbox with with the FCP conversion kit for the M6. Q - aside from the longer drive shaft of the M5 and different software update for the M6, do you know if the 6 speed of an M5, linkages and all bits fit M6? Does year make a difference? Much appreciate your awesome content and feedback. cheers
Hello! I no longer use the FCP conversion kit; I work out of my own custom parts list using multiple suppliers. The transmission, shifter linkage, and pedal hardware is all the same between the M5 and M6. The only differences are the interior trims/shift knob, driveshaft, and DME software version. No difference between model years on the M6.

Making a nightmare of undertaking just a tough job- but most importantly allowing me to keep my sanity! Truly "Wow"!! Couple of Qs -what's your 2024 labor cost for M6 conversion with most, if not all hardware supplied. BTW - i see no mention of the M5 starter motor replacement* with the s65 6 spd flywheel (* in your parts SS). Per ua-cam.com/video/5wYLScJPHfs/v-deo.html (minute 2:31 on) or did i miss something? Continue doing a bunch of searching and costings!

The starter motor does not need to be changed; the S85 and S65 use the same flywheel teeth! Starter motor replacement is very labor intensive though, so I'd wait until it fails before digging into that job. Thanks!

It is the same process as the M5 conversion, so I don't plan to an M6 specific series.

The power button is not present on manual M5s/M6s. You can configure the power mode now through iDrive in conjunction with the M button the steering wheel.

Nice, been wanting to do this swap to my e63. Have you ever looked into DCT swaps? Seen a few people with them now.
It can be done, but I don't view the DCT as an improvement over the SMG. For the expense, there's nothing more enjoyable and reliable than a traditional 6-speed manual.
manual gearbox does not belong on high (and maybe more importantly, fast) revving machine. mercedes' m156 yes, bmw v10 no.
Having driven multiple examples of these cars with both transmissions, I have to respectfully disagree. The SMG removes so much of the enjoyment (and reliability) from these cars.

Tell that to Porsche and their 9000 RPM GT3 6sp manual cars that command a premium on the second hand market.
@@ivanwayne2507 porsche knows this, it's the people without sense easily overcome with hypes who they have to cater to.
Traditionally, these people are known as enthusiasts. They keep Porsche (and BMW) in business and are the reason most of these phenomenal vehicles exist in the first place.@@theotherchannel2028
