My dad taught me this song 60 years ago.Hecwas brought up right from the early 1920s and kept this song with him through the combat of WWII.The last time we sang it together he was 85 and struggling to maintain but remembered this.Straight from the heart.

Actually this hymn is an old, OLD hymn..the Lyrics are NOT by Paisley!! He has changed a few words;"lonesome" to "lonely" for instance and added a verse, if memory serves,, but this has been sung in Appalachia for decades.
The lyrics were written in 1910 by my maternal grandfather Rev. William Andrew Fletcher. Others have claimed writing it after it was recorded or change the lyrics here and there. but my grandfather was a preacher and a writer. He wrote this on a train and a song plugger sitting next to him paid him $2 for it.
