As several people have said, this was the theme from "The Greatest American Hero" TV show which was about a guy who got a suit from aliens that gave him super powers (a LOT of them) when he has it on. The problem was, he lost the instruction book. Being a comic book fan I loved the show as a kid (I think I was about eight at the time) and every time I hear this song I immediately think about the show. Joey Scarbury was a one-hit wonder if I recall correctly. Also, that is Andy Gibb and the lady is Marilyn McCoo from The 5th Dimension and as a duo with her husband Billy Davis Jr., this is from the show "Solid Gold".
The suit logo/insignia was based on Cannell’s scissors.
Do you remember the scene where he trying to fly and it took a little kid to tell him to take 3 steps just like superman does. Loved that show, wish it got reruns

You only got a couple of years on me. I was six at the time when the show came out in '81 and I remember it being one of my favorite shows at the time.

This was the theme song to the TV show "The Greatest American Hero" starring William Katt and Robert Culp. Katt was the reluctant superhero and Culp was his sidekick/buddy. Fun show, if rather cheesy.

I grew up watching all the shows you mention, and the themes were so catchy that, when the program started, it was almost a let-down. :) I bought a CD with all the themes he wrote and am totally gobsmacked at just how good Post was. Jay and Amber, back in the 70s and 80s, it was fairly common to find TV theme songs like this hitting the charts. Alas, Joey Scarbury would be a one hit wonder. Another one hit wonder recorded the title theme for a short-lived TV show called “Makin’ It”: David Naughton, who earned his fame from acting (“American Werewolf in London” and “My Sister Sam”) and is perhaps best known for the “I’m a Pepper” commercials for Dr. Pepper, but I loved Makin’ It and think you’ll enjoy the song.

This was the theme song to one of my favorite TV shows, The Greatest American Hero, back in the 80s. I never knew who sang it, but I still know 90% of the words, to this day!
I thought that show was so good back then. But I tried to rewatch it. I guess taste change. Or now adays you expect more.

The Greatest American Hero. This song was HUGE. The story goes that when Mike Post wrote "Believe it or Not," he played it for the producer. Post asked what he thought, and the producer answered, "It sounds like a number one hit!" It made it to No. 2 on the 1981 Billboard charts. Hard to imagine a TV theme doing that now.

I love that this is being played on the show SOLID GOLD. This show was a huge deal in the day where we caught so many bands and artists perform (not live unfortunatelY) with dancers all around them. This was one before and during the MTV heyday and so those of us that didn't have MTV at the time had to depend on shows like this to see so many bands. And if you did have MTV then you got to experience them in a live setting without the videos, which often times could lose the artist and song. And then there is Andy Gibb and Marilyn McCoo hosting.

You guys hit the nail on the head when you said it gives a "wholesome" feeling. That was really one of the themes of the show. The main character was a school teacher, and just a very regular, down-to-earth guy, who had this hero thing drop in his lap. One of the on going gags in the show is that although he could fly, he was really never good at it, and crash landed alot.

I literally sat at the TV with my tape recorder READY when the show started to tape it. Black & WHITE TV in the basement. i was probably 8 or 9. I had all the TV themes on one tape. Simon & Simon TRACK #1, BABY!!
In April of 1982, I, along with my high school band, flag corps and drill team, flew from a Dallas suburb to England to be the first American high school band to lead the Easter parade in London. We spent a week there and it was the trip of a lifetime for us. A month later, at our band banquet, our historian put a slide show together of the school year and, of course, our trip to Europe. When we got to the part of the slide show about the trip, this song was what she used as the "soundtrack". It was so fitting because of the line "Believe it or not, I'm walking on air". For us, that was a reference not only to the airplane flight but also to the fact that we had been chosen to represent the US. This song always brings me back to that trip and banquet.
