He got wins over Nakamura and Ricochet, he got beaten by Jey, the biggest babyface Raw has to offer right now. In story you could say that Jey beat Dragunov due to the former being more experienced while the latter lacks it and that made the difference at the end.
With Ilja loosing I get why mainly due to how over Jey is that and to save Ilja vs Gunther for likely a PLE. Feel like the same fans who say Ilja is buried see 1 simple loss as a wrestler being buried

Ilja isn’t buried, but I’m just disappointed. We’ve seen Gunther vs dragunov twice before, one in nxt uk and one on a nxt takeover, we should be able to get a small encounter for free similar to Gunther vs Shemus. Plus, it starts a redemption story. Ilja says he defeated Gunther and he can do it again, but in their first encounter he couldn’t(either clean or by interference by Kaiser). Then over the next year or two you build up Dragunov to face Gunther for the world title where you then have Ilja beat him clean for the belt. His climb should have started here and then continue to become one of the top faces of the company, instead we get the yeet man. As long as Gunther wins the whole tournament then it’s fine, I just wouldn’t have had the replacement guy in the semi finals.
People forget that gunther is NOT winning the semifinals since he cant leave the US, and the event is in Saudi Arabia. Thats also one of the reasons on why he lost at Wrestlemania, so yeah, Jey will win probably.

But tbf, how can any wrestler be good at every facet of a being a wrestler? Ricochet in my opinion is one of the greatest in ring performers of all time, you could even make the argument he's the greatest but you could mention how he's not good on the mic and lacks charisma, does that now make him a bad wrestler? John Cena is one of the best on the mic, top 5 in my opinion but once again, you could say he's not that good of a wrestler in ring wise, does this now make him a bad wrestler?
