  • 👋🏻 How to match into diagnostic radiology residency - everything you need to know. I broke down this video into things that you do during your first two years of med school and then things to do in third and fourth year. Just start out med school by studying hard, acing the USMLE, joining some radiology interest groups and societies, and doing some research. Then finish third and fourth year up with acing your rotations, doing a rads rotation, getting your letters in line, writing a good personal statement, applying broadly, and interviewing well and you should be good to go! Below you will find more reading that should be helpful too. Best of luck and while you’re reading this don’t forget to leave a comment and smash the like and subscribe buttons ;)

    In case it wasn’t clear in my explanation about applying to internships, when you apply to radiology residency you also have to secure a first-year residency position - AKA an “internship.”
    “PGY” = post graduate year 1, 2, 3, etc.
    “Internship” = first year of residency i.e. PGY1
    “Categorical” = means that a program includes a PGY1 internship
    “Preliminary” = the program is only for a one year PGY1 internship i.e. internal medicine, surgery, transitional year
    “Advanced” = program starts in PGY2 year and does not include a PGY1 internship i.e. most radiology programs

    I love this video as well! I am an aspiring radiologist in Portland and I am working on some of the prerequisites to get into a good university. Becoming a radiology tech in my two year goal I hope to obtain after I get my Assosiates of Applied Science degree, thats the one I'm going for currently! I am doing really well on all my classes because their all inportant. I really love this video. :)

    I've been enjoying your videos! Are you able to speak on your experience with radiology PA's? I have a huge interest in radiology as a future specialty, but I'm unsure if I want to go the med school route or PA route. I'm concerned there's less opportunity as a PA in radiology. Ty!

      Glad you’re liking the videos :)
      Within interventional radiology there’s plenty of opportunities for PAs, not so much in the other diagnostic radiology subspecialties. I’ve heard of some private practices training PAs to read plain films but never seen it firsthand. Hope that helps!

    I’m a sophomore in high school with big dreams to become an interventional radiologist or a neuroradiologist. I know it’s a competitive field but I will make it. I will keep my grades up, get into a good college, and an amazing med school (either UPenn’s Med school or John’s Hopkins)

    I’m an MS2 interested in Radiology. I love imaging and diagnostics but I also enjoy patient care and interacting with patients. Are there any subspecialties in Diagnostic Radiology where there is more patient contact?

    • @drparisis
      @drparisis  2 роки тому +4

      IR and breast have the most patient contact. Body, MSK, and neuro still have a good amount of patient interaction via fluoro/procedures

    Hello Dr
    Thanks for your advice
    I’m wondering if I can apply only for preliminary & TY for this incoming cycle
    And next year apply for advanced DR? Or I have to apply in the same match cycle for both preliminary & advanced ?
    Us /IMG with home country residency in radiology with 243 CK score
    Any extra advice /tip for match? Ty

    Hey Dr. Parisis, can you update this video to what you think I can do, as an incoming DO first year medical student, to match into radiology now that STEP is pass fail. I just got into my program, but I feel a bit lost on what I can do, as well as WHEN I should do things like research. This video has greatly helped me out in this with your timeline breakdown. Thank you!!!!
    Ray

      Hi Ray, with Step 1 being pass/fail now I think the main things you can do are 1) focus on getting the best Step 2 score that you can and 2) take advantage of networking i.e. away rotations, research, conferences, etc.
      The summer between M1-M2 year is a good time to get some research done, at least that's what I did. I also was able to get some projects done during early 3rd year. Good luck!

      @@drparisis Hey Dr. Parisis, thanks for the tips. Do you think an incoming student can use research presentations, posters, and publications earned before medical school for residency applications or must they all be earned during medical school?
      I have a publication as well as 2 posters at conferences from my junior year through my M.S program.
      Thanks!

      @@rheniusantonyraj8562 I would definitely put those projects on your residency application

    I've been a high school teacher the past 5 years, mainly working with special needs students. I'm a little burnt out working with the general public and with parents, and feel a lack of intellectual stimulation in my current career. I'm considering changing careers to medicine, and I have a particular interest in diagnostic radiology since I want to work more in the background, have a great work-life balance, and be able to be more selective with who I spend my time with.

    Any advice on increasing your odds of securing an ESIR position in a DR residency?

      Second this ^^

    • @drparisis
      @drparisis  2 роки тому

      My understanding is that it’s a supply/demand thing, some classes (like mine) have 0 people interested in ESIR while others have more than the allotted spots (our residency has 2 spots per year)

      @@drparisis I️ totally agree there. I️ think we will see it impact non-MD applicants and international medical students. That seems to be the consensus on that front. However, I️ meant, what do you recommend people do to stand out now that step 1 is pass/fail?
      Also, recently came across your channel. I️ subscribed. I’m not necessarily vying for radiology, but it’s nice to see the various insights and learn more about the field. I’m still considering options as I️ start M1 in the fall.
