- In a special intercontinental episode, Lydia Polgreen reports from South Africa as the country challenges Israel for its attack on Rafah in southern Gaza.
The post-apartheid nation has emerged as a critical leader and a moral voice in some (but not all) superpower struggles. Yet back at home, South Africa’s 30 years of multiracial democracy is undergoing major political upheaval. What does the nation’s recent election offer young nations hoping for postcolonialist democracy? Lydia opens her reporter’s notebook and explores these questions with the South African journalist William Shoki (www.nytimes.co...) and her editor, Max Strasser.
A full transcript of this episode will be available within 24 hours of publication on the Times website

Liberation South Africa and Zimbabwe. How about total corruption and incompetence?
The politics of South Africa has doomed it to racial conflict.
When in it comes to economic policies ANC destroying SA from inside out and turning the country into a failed state. There were reports that ANC was in financial trouble and suddenly the problems were “solved”. It was also mentioned that Iran “solved” the problem. Over years ANC became a rusty and dysfunctional bureaucracy that needs to be dismantled
ANC stands with Russia
Thanks - I was waiting for them to discuss Russia’s tentacles 🦑 in Africa and it’s support of Hamas and Iran!! Anything to destabilize global democracy and the west!!!
O no south Africa great military power got the IDF COMBAT HARDEND TROOPS SCARED.WHAT YOU GOING TO DO TRY TAKE ON THE BEST MILATARY IN THE MIDDLE EAST WITH SPEARS LMFAOO
i think the aim is more to try to frame the conflict as a racist one... so, you've rather gifted them a minor w, handed yourself an embarrassing l
It's not the best, it's only making trouble and cry out to big brother. The day that ends its nothing
Naw. Just trying to expose nazis to the world who seem to all be blind or stupid or racist or something to try and justify genocide
Empty posturing with hope that Iran will offer more money
@@millrace32complete idiocy. Jews and Arabs are people of the same race. Cousins with similar DNA and language family. I believe if not outside agitators, the ussr in particular, they would solve these problems years ago
it is the ANC under the guise of the South African government that has done this south Africa is predominantly Christian and no Christian would ever do this
it is not South Africa that went to ICJ it was the ANC, i would like to see what will happen now that the ANC has lost the election
The ANC still won the Election, but does not have the majority rule in Goverment for now, you shoukd read and study politics a bit more prior to giving your perspective.
Most people in SA support the decision of the ANC to go to the ICJ.
Might be the only good move the ANC has done.
REALLY?!!
@@yeoworld No, they don't. Most South Africans are conservative Christians and therefore are pro-Israel.
Although I have great respect for Mandela, his comparison of Palestinians to black South Africans is a dubious one. There are far more differences than similarities between the two situations. Palestinian terrorism, the killing of innocents, has been going on for 100 years. The main reason for South Africa's support of the Palestinians is that the Palestinians are always seen as the underdogs, the oppressed. Meanwhile, radical Islamists are getting a free ride. Jews of color are ignored. I'm just tired of all this breathless talk of Israeli colonialism. Israel is not and was never white South Africa!
Second part of the interview made me puke
I look to organizations like NYT for good intellectual reporting. I've been to South Africa several times and have thought it has the potential to be a beacon for the entire continent and still have hopes it will grow into that role. NYT's exclusion of South Africa's membership in BRICS is an insult to the audience and I hope others are as disappointed as I am.
BRICS is a joke
I kept waiting for Russia ‘s meddling in Africa and many other fledgling democracies by whipping up the “colonial West” narrative. Look at Niger!
The part on South Africa and Israel/ Hamas is so weak.
Great conversation!
I do like Lydia's mention of the idea "neither settler nor native." Or how about settler AND native?
Squatter and invasive species. FTFY
OK, so just to get this straight: if South Africa is incoherent, it's not hipocricy because isn't incoherency a part of life anyways? Now, the US not condamning Israel as strongly as it condemned Russia, that's BAD! Verey BAD. Got it
South Africa is truly a pile.
A pile of former apartheid Africans fighting nazis? A pile of what bro? It's been apartheid state until 1991...33 whole years ago. Who made it into this pile you speak of besides colonizers?
