Is this a rare thing? I did this a bit spur-of-the-moment but considering how good the system is for solo I'm surprised it's not more prevalent. I know Errant Adventures did a whole season based around Maze Rats though, that was great!
Seems I was mistaken about the whole season thing, I believe it finds some use in Season 2 as a generator but the system he uses is "Sword, Crown and Unspeakable Power" - Maze Rats was a bonus collaboration with Tale of the Manticore (who does an incredible solo OSR B/X podcast): www.errantadventurespod.com/bonusepisodes
Great to have you back! This character creation video was awesome, I love when super unique characters just pop out of nowhere like this. I might have to pick up Knave just for those tables!
At this point I've done about a 720 on character creation between "distribute points, elaborate backstory" and "roll dice, embrace the random". The random definitely ends up with more unique results but can be a bit frustrating if you have a clear image in mind of what you want to play.
Hello, Andersen! (Anderson?) I'm a new roleplayer, and I'm glad to see this, as I have Knave 1e, Maze Rats, lots of dice, and a few books of random tables. In other words, I have everything that I might need to run a campaign similar to this one.
Hiya! Sounds like a great setup to jump right in, indeed. And if it’s missing an oracle table somewhere I’d keep in mind that Ironsworn is completely free and has a bunch of great tables independent of whether or not you use the system. Good luck on your adventures! Or possibly bad luck. That’s more interesting!
How'd you find it for solo? As soon as I saw the skill defense mechanism which essentially turns everything into a potential player facing roll I was 100% sold.
very happy to have discovered this channel, will be following along! its fun to see the Knave edition with my artwork in a recorded session. good gaming!
Seems solo is rising a little if the Kickstarter sphere is anything to go by. Lots of stretch goals now throwing out solo rules for new systems. Definitely getting some traction on UA-cam and other platforms, too (although the 5E sphere seems somewhat resistant to the idea - Ginny D's recent video might've helped there a bit).
@@killtenratsrpg Just received my ShadowDark Package my wife got me in February for my Birthday back in May. Plan on running that for a Solo campaign once I take a look at the .pdf for the rules.
Cool video! I was looking into Knave for a possible video of my own, and didn't really consider how interesting story-telling solo like this could be. Thanks for showing off these ideas!~
Another easy to use RPG that works for solo play is Black Star, a "Star Wars" knockoff. It isn't free, but it is super cheap at $4 for PDF, and $9 for a booklet. The gameplay is "player facing". That means only the player rolls dice, which I feel is good for Solo play. It does have complications when dice rolls fail, but one interesting fact is that out of combat the GM picks what happens to you (there is a list, so you can randomize this with a dice roll), but in combat it switches to another list that the player picks from. Odd, but that is part of the game.
Hey, I appreciate you taking the time to comment even if it was a long time ago. I had to step away from UA-cam for a bit and got a little frustrated by that, so I wasn't answering comments like I should have. Apologies for that! Interesting, never heard of Black Star! Always appreciate new player facing roll type systems, thanks for the recommendation.
Hey, I appreciate you taking the time to comment even if it was a long time ago. I had to step away from UA-cam for a bit and got a little frustrated by that, so I wasn't answering comments like I should have. Apologies for that! Oh wow. Yeah I can totally hear that, especially when I'm a little hoarse and out of breath. Huh!
Nice to have you back! I should try doing this someday, haha. I have TONS of books for generating stuff, and I rarely get to use them all... Fantastic video, as usual.
Thank you! Yeah this book hoarding thing is both satisfying and frustrating considering how much good stuff just collects dust over time. I hope to run this for a while and trot out as many different sources as I can (plus potentially some online D100 stuff like D4Caltrops).
Haha that was Wisdom, fortunately - I probably would've swapped a 1 in INT. But this character feels a bit un-wise, all things considered, so it's not a bad fit!
Those dice rolls! Rolling d6 with double disadvantage and two thirds of the results being 4 or more. When you rolled charisma all I could think was, "One chance in 216!" I'm really looking forward to finding out how the rude, charismatic outlaw relates to her compatriots.
I’ve just accepted that this is apparently what dice do if you film them. Every time I think about it I just come to the conclusion that I don’t fully understand randomness because I’m genuinely worried there’s something off with my dice. It’s definitely a lot less pronounced when I play without recording but then again I also play differently then, at least somewhat. It’s weirdly frustrating to have stronger characters when playing solo since failure moves the story a lot more interestingly than constant success.
@@killtenratsrpg When you put it that way, it does sound frustrating. I ran a Dungeon World session a few days ago (actually the Homebrew World hack) and the three most fun moments were when players rolled failures. One of them deliberately Spouted Lore even though their character's dump stat was INT. I assume they did it because they just liked the idea of being completely missinformed about the situation.
Yeah those are the moments! That’s a lot of what sticks! Sure, the success also turns memorable when you crit to finish off the villain after a long campaign but even that is more impactful on the tail of failures. I always aim to have my characters have their “Die Hard” moments, similar to Bruce Willis/John McClane who always starts out the movie in a fairly comfortable position and five minutes later he’s crawling through an air vent in an undershirt, face mangled, with no shoes and bleeding feet - and then come back from THAT. This approach works really well in Ironsworn since you can fail forward much more comfortably but it’s generally something I look for in any system.
@@killtenratsrpg Aha. I'd never thought about how easy a game makes it to fail forward. When I return to your first Ironsworn chapter, I'll keep an eye out for that.
I like the way that what we know about the character was organically revealed by rolls at given moments; however, I think it might have helped you if basic things like race and gender were determined first - we get this great opening scene and then the reveal that it's an orc female really retcons the scene. It made the feel go from "The Witcher" to "Drunk History" for me. :D But I am enjoying the way the story is developing!

I had to step away from UA-cam for a bit and got a little frustrated by that, so I wasn't answering comments like I should have. Apologies for that! Interesting to hear how that played out for you, in my head it was all shadowy and indistinct without preconceived ideas but the Orc definitely threw me, too. I like this approach for character creation for sure, it was the most extreme shade of it though, with no initial direction for what I'd be playing or in what setting. I'm probably not going to be leaving it THAT open again for most of the other series in this style.
I'll have to give that a look. I like "A Lonely Knave" and Parts Per Million is cranking out solo rules like nobody's business but having a different perspective to consult is nice, too.
Same here... I've been planning to start a solo game of Savage Worlds in the Harn setting but I keep just reading up on more Harn lore and planning things out and not *starting.* This video is a good kick in the pants to JUST START.
@@samuraionedaymore Harn is a setting from the 1980s, still around, for fantasy games. They created a game for the setting, HarnMaster, but I don't use the game, just the maps and world lore.
