A nation state is not immoral or moral by nature. It only reflects the people who wield it. And it is not the case that local identities are impossible within a country, they are just not possible in western countries right now because our established governments are against our well-being. If that were no longer the case then we would see a resurgence in local identity. I advocate for a strong national state because we need such a thing to defend ourselves in an ever increasingly imperial world. Without it we are easy picking for the numerous nation states that won't give up their power. The micro can rebel against, but ultimately cannot overcome the wall that is the macro. We can catch a glimpse of how effective a national identity is right now; directly by observing how well the "Left" continues to obtain power with it, and indirectly by observing how Libertarianism is allowed as an acceptable form of the "Right" today. We are allowed a framework that cannot defeat the establishment because of its self-impairing nature. At the very least a nation state is the solution to the problems we face today. Tomorrow may be a different story, but that is a long ways off from now.
I agree this is hypothetically possible but greed has the same ultimate outcomes regardless of ideology, no nation state in europe today has truly preserved the national identity and they all on my opinion have been detrimental to the nations they represent. It was "our own" after all who are responsible for the changes and it has been mostly conservative parties in power making this transformation, modern liberalism was reacted against for a long time while our countries were transforned.
