He had always considered making guitars a passion, not an occupation. In 2007, Randall Wyn Fullmer, an ordinary guy with a cat, decided to turn his life-long hobby into a full-out obsession.
To launch his adventure he did what anyone else would do - he quit his high paying dream job at Disney, leaving behind a successful 20 year career of creating major motion pictures such as "Chicken Little" and "The Emperor's New Groove". It seemed to make so much sense at the time! With Disney in the rear-view, he launched his self-proclaimed "Mad Plan", crafting small-batch bass guitars full time.
From a beginner's electrifying success to near break-down, this is a beautiful, honest and inspirational portrait of a passionate craftsperson who walked headlong into a foolhardy dream ... a true tale of a life unwound and restrung.

After watching this, I contacted Randy and got on the waiting list for a custom build. Randy worked with me on wood selection, neck, electronics, all aspects of the bass. Throughout the build, Randy kept me updated with text and photos. Finally my new Wyn bass was delivered. I cannot begin to describe the artistry of the instrument. My expectations were surpassed in every respect. The bass is quite simply extraordinary. I have no affiliation with Randy or Wyn bass. I’m just a lucky recipient of a work of Art. Highly, highly, recommended.

So awesome! As a 64 yr old who has played since 12 yrs old this was right in my wheelhouse! Why it took UA-cam 8 yrs to put it in my recommended list, I’ll never know!
I retired at 55 and I immediately went to Quebec to learn to build acoustics with Sergei de Jonge - a life long dream! After the two steel strings I built at Sergei’s shop I built another 1/2 dozen as “family heirlooms” and gave them to the players in the family. But it did kick start a repair/restore business I’ve operated from home for nearly 9 yrs!
Finishing a build, or difficult repair, or a full restoration of an instrument, and placing it back in the players hands is a tremendously rewarding experience!
Guitars are ALIVE! A few other things give me that feeling, but to a lesser degree - old wooden sailboats, to me, are also “alive” - and occasionally an old firearm can give me that sense, too. Something that has provided as many meals to its owner as the local grocer’s is something very special.
I’ve just bought a Squeir BassVI tuned one octave below standard guitar tuning! And I’m in love!
    Loved this doc! Kudos!
    Peace

Don't get me wrong: I LOVE Abe to death, going WAY back with him and Lee Ritenour having seen them in concert including getting both their autographs on a Captain Fingers CD in Houston back in the day...
But if the argument is that 5,000 session recordings gets you the title of "the most widely used session bassist of our time", then SOMEBODY needs to APOLOGIZE TO *CAROL* *KAYE* ...
Because I'll be DAMN if she isn't the UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF THE BASS with over 10,000 sessions, including being all over the Beach Boys to just name ONE super group she played with along with the theme songs for Hawaii Five-O, the ORIGINAL Mission Impossible, and a list of others TOO DAMN LONG TO EVEN BOTHER WITH.
    Carol is the real deal:
Brian Wilson: "Carol, you're the greatest d--- bass player in the world".
Merv Griffin: "I love Carol Kaye, she's the best."
Lou Rawls: "Carol played great on all my hits (60's) and she was cool."
Howard Roberts: "Carol, you're the greatest."
Jazz singer Joe Williams: "Carol Kaye, as black as she wants to be."
Benny Carter: "Carol, you were the best on Fender bass and a large part of our music business."
Milt Bernhardt, vip trombonist, Emcee of Big Band Academy: "Carol Kaye, I forgive you for putting the Fender Bass on the map."
Plas Johnson, #1 recording jazz saxman (Pink Panther): "I enjoyed 'Thumbs Up', everyone played well."
DR. JOHN (Mac Rabbenac): "Carol Kaye is a sweetheart and a kick-a--
guitar player as well as a kick-a-- bass player!"
Taj Mahal to Carol Kaye when both appeared at the 2000 EMC Music Museum in Seattle - "Carol Kaye, you are the BEST!"
Hollywood 1960s Motown Producer Hal Davis quote from "Bass Heroes" book: "Yes, Carol Kaye did do the Motown hits she claims."

Wow! I'm glad I stumbled across this even though it's been here a while. I once had a dream of becoming a luthier because of my love for music & the craft of instrument making, the creativity & working with your hands aspect of it is so satisfying. To me, a fine instrument is a piece of art itself which can then be used to make more art. I guess fear of the unknown got in the way but now I wish I would've gone for it & damn the outcome.

Great job by the whole Doc. crew ! Randalls' story is super Inspiring and courageous But this scenario gets played out countless times EVERYDAY in this country
by folks who dare have the conviction to chase their dreams . Weather it's the Mom & Pop store on the corner or a national entity , It all starts with a spark of
inspiration and the undeniable force of untethered human spirit to lace up their gloves and get in the ring !!! Try this in Sierra , Venezuela , Cuba...you get the picture.
With all our warts and imperfections , We live in the freest society humans have yet constructed . This is a wonderful time to be alive , if we have the sense to preserve
the freedoms that make this story possible...and really not that uncommon...ROCK ON RANDALL !!!

What a wonderful story. Randall is an amazing artisan. Each bass looked and sounded like a work of art. I would so love one of these one day. This is truly a labor of love for him to put himself out there on the edge. He is like a Stradivari of our time we are fortunate that he choose this mission. Come on how can you not love a man, that loves music, great craftsmanship and cats. I do hope he is doing well and keeps up the wonderful work. If I hit the lotto I will put in an order immediately for one of these works of art. Bravo to the film maker as well. Thanks.

I couldn't afford to buy a guitar because my parents wouldn't approve of it, I built a guitar with the help of a Sikh gentleman who had a furniture workshop, I was 14 yrs old, I bought a guitar but later on I realised it was a slide guitar as the bridge was high, but I adjusted it, since then I have 7guitars and now at the age of 64 I wouldn't hesitate to build one , this work is really beautiful because the instrument you make gives joy not only to the player but to those who listen to it. Keep up the good work.

The fact that bass players from the world over are completely taken with the instruments you design and manufacture is such an amazing success. You talk of that midpoint on the journey where the euphoric inspiration has evaporated -- in your case, you're told to uproot your shop and get all your machines UL certified. These unexpected developments are costing yet more money you didn't really have. How did you go from that to having this totally pimped-out shop with integrated air filtration, a stockpile of tropical wood, clamps and machine tools up the wazoo....?

+Tom Wilcox every elemental variance of material will impart a different effect from the string on down ive made one that was 3/4 of an ounce 22 frets reinforced neck arch top f holes and fully playable because a music teacher of my youngest daughter told her it wasn't possible and I say as long as I don't believe it isnt it is and have shown that to be the answer to too many nay sayers and sceptics and the wood is distinctly profound to the sounds transition and longevity and overall sound emitted period no ears are needed to hear a guitar it need only touch you any where and you feel it different bodies tune at different levels of tention to strings no two ever act the same even by same builders with matching materials and processes I think the bodies from mexico have the best tonal expression next is the martin jumbo bodies then the arch tops pre electric and electrified tube amps are king solid state built amps just cant achieve the level of pure warmth and beautiful sounds tubes allow I build them for the fun and I am not a pro but I know how and the final instrument is allways different and that's the drive to create them for me
