      It's even crazier because he definitely didn't know Vader's past. Vader and Anakin were 2 different people at this point. It wasn't until the next movie that Lucas decided he should be the father, which may be the greatest movie decision of all time.

      George Lucas only decided in the middle of filming Empire that Darth Vader was going to be Luke's father... They did not know during A New Hope. This is why Obi-Wan calls Vader, "Darth" in their light saber fight on the death star. Alec Guinness did not know that Vader was Luke's father, or that he actually cut his limbs off, or any of that.

    • @RedThorn

      There's a reason why Alec Guinness is the ONLY actor in all seven Star Wars movies to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Even though the prequel backstories were non-existent, he gave Obi-Wan a multi-layered character who clearly had a lot of history and wisdom as well as pain and sorrow just with his expressions. That's why with or without the prequels, you can still draw interpretations as to what Obi-Wan's gazes into the distance can mean.
      Brilliant actor.

      Given Sir Alec's acting choices you do have to wonder if Lucas had told him that what he was saying was actually a lie, a truth from "a certain point of view". I guess even if Lucas hadn't, Alec was such a good actor that he would have known relating the death of someone the character counted as a "good friend" would be painful.

      Nope. It's a fact the whole "Vader is Luke's father" thing didn't come about until the second movie. Episode 4 was written to be as standalone as possible, in case it failed in the box office. At the same time Episode 5 was being written Lucas also drew up the script for a very low budget sequel that would wrap up the few loose ends, just in case.

    That beautiful moment when fans realize, that for all their perceived faults, the prequels did not detract from or cheapen the original trilogy. Instead and in fact enhanced and enriched them by killing the myths and legends surrounding Anakin and the Clone Wars by showing the truth. But that's just my "certain point of view"...

Just like there is no Anakin Skywalker anymore, just Vader. Simply brilliant.

    The more times i watch this video, the more depressing it becomes... Realizing how truly devastating Anakin's fall to the dark side was to Obi Wan... How much it broke and scarred him... and how much pain it caused him to remember, and having to hide the truth from Anakin's own son...
    *REQUESTED SPOILER WARNING* last time i cried this much with a Star Wars scene was when Kylo killed Han...
    amazing how much a scene's meaning changes with editing like this...

    I always loved the tone in his voice as he says “Before the dark times... before the Empire.” He says it with a sad, sickened, regretful disdain. Shame, even. The word “empire” itself inspires images of some glorious society, rich and powerful beyond one’s wildest dreams. But Obi-Wan knows it’s all an illusion of grandeur, because he saw exactly how all of that “glory” was obtained. Peace obtained through war. Security obtained through oppression. Prosperity obtained through deception. He knows the Empire was built on a foundation of complacency, secrecy, murder, and lies.
    If Obi-Wan was Leia’s only hope, Luke was Obi-Wan’s only hope.

    This is beautiful!
    Lucas was destroyed by rabid fans who mourned their childhood by hating the prequels. So he sold it, and now Disney will keep on making reboot movies like ep. VII., without any creative power or will. That is so tragic.

    • @jortalus
      @jortalus 8 років тому +46

      +Gasssolo You might be forgetting how awful 90% of the dialogue was between Obi-Wan and Anakin in episode III. This video takes strong imagery and meshes it with a strong performance by Sir Alec Guinness, but without the selective editing we'd be hearing stuff like "I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND" and "FROM MY POINT OF VIEW THE JEDI ARE EVIL". The prequels have some real gems, but you have to sift through at least 70% garbage to find the high points.
      Episode VII is mostly high points. There's nothing wrong with a reboot film, but VII takes it further by making it a continuation rather than a hard reboot.

      Bob Jenkins So, why do you think so?

    • @bobjenkins643
      @bobjenkins643 7 років тому +1

      Scoopa It may have been some of his lines as well, but Anakin is a very emotional character, and the way he portrayed his emotions (up until the very end of ROTS) wasn't very genuine. When angry he just put on a sort of mad face and kept this same whiny tone it wasn't really convincing. Then when flirting with Padme the way he talked and presented himself was just creepy. In film there are very few times when Anakin seems laid back or relaxed. I know that Anakin is supposed to be a serious character but when showing happiness, excitement, or humor he has this sort of tenseness to him that makes the emotion less genuine. Though I am not a huge fan of his acting don't get me wrong I did love the prequels as they are what I grew up with.

    What I really love about this video is that in Episode 4 that scene really doesn't hold much weight. It explains the backstory but there's no actual dramatic feel to it. Put the said music and the flashbacks to it and the scene is completely transformed into a feel-trip of epic proportion.
