cat tips: having a kitten is great cause you can train them to get used to things adult cats usually hate; clipping nails, car rides, having guests over, being carried etc. if he's old enough, treats are always a good way to encourage good behavior. also take lot of pictures but also videos cause you'll miss the little way he walks, his tiny legs when they run and all the squeaky sounds he makes
Those kitten traits really are great, true, but the desire for them does lead a lot of older cats to go un-adopted and euthanized, so remember to add some compassion to the mix.
@@penultimateh766 oh no for sure. i have three rescued cats, two adults & one kitten, which all happened by chance. if you have the opportunity to do so, i'd say rescue a cat at any age as long as it suits your lifestyle

Kitten tips! Start clipping her nails frequently to get her used to it so she doesn’t have a fear of it as she gets older. I rescued a kitten from a parking lot last summer and she was only 6 weeks old. If you need tips hit me up! Besides my rescue, I’ve had cats since 95. 🥰

I was under the impression cats have nerves through their nails that make clipping v painful? We've had cats and never clipped their nails before, it's not caused any problems having nails and means they're not harmed in the process of clipping!
if you don t cut her nails too deep it should be fine, also be careful with your books because my cat 2 years ago when i rescued him he was about the same age as yours and he used to chew on my books and now i have little cat teeth marks on a lot of my books, for example he ruined my copy of love in the time of cholera:))
@@meganstevenson311 Cats don't have nerves in most of their nails, just near the quick. You can generally see where that is but it doesn't hurt them at all if you just take the pointy bits off. We trim out cats' nails regularly and they don't mind it at all, one even enjoys it and splays on her back purring while we do it!
Another kitty tip: wet food is better for their kidneys than dry. Cats tend not to drink enough water and wet food can help keep their kidneys healthy longer! It also keeps their weight down.
Get a kitty toothbrush (don’t be me and skip this, I’m dealing with 2k in incoming vet bills for dental rn) and treat for heart worms every year. 💚

@@emmiereads just incorporate slowly and watch the litter box. They make kitten formulated wet food that’s nice and gentle and you can give them both so long as weight doesn’t become an issue. Pâté style is the lowest in carbs/junk usually. They can eat as much as they want until they’re a year old but don’t let him get in the habit of being fed on demand or that adorable little floof will become the boss of you very quickly. 😅 I’ve had two vets now tell me male orange cats just seem more prone to weight issues (which lead to diabetes) so I’ve had to read so much about this stuff 😵💫

I would check with your vet! With my older cats I mix both wet and dry food in their diet. But I believe
dry is recommended when they're young because they can be prone to diarrhea :P

Look up Jackson Galaxy and Kitten Lady channels, they have a ton of info! 😊 something else, and I'm sorry if you already know it, but there are a ton of plants that are toxic for cats. Jackson Galaxy has at least one video about it, and ASPCA has a huge list of toxic/non-toxic plants.

Seing Calcifer chewing on your books makes me all emotional inside. I just lost my closest cat recently, he was basically my shadow! Though he had the worst habit of chewing on any book he could find. When he was alive it was annoying, but now that he is gone i am so glad i have little reminders everywhere of my little friend.

Gorgeous 🐈 I’ve had cats for 40 years and they’ve all lived to 15-16 years, one to 18! Never clipped claws (get a scratching post) and never bathed them (they wash themselves) Enjoy him ❤️
I agree. Cats for nearly 60 here and they've all gotten to an average of 20 years. Rough barked logs, scratching posts and cheap couches are the best for their claws.

Aww! So cute! I know for socialization, it’s super important to handle them a lot, and one of the best things we did for our kitty was get him used to his carrier from the beginning, so we treat-trained him to think of it as his safe place and now he’s really good at travelling in it (by car, plane) because as long as he’s in his carrier he knows nothing bad will happen :3

Kittens are bundles of energy that can drive you insane. I highly recommend playing with Calcifer to help get that energy/restlessness out (to some extent). Also, self-cleaning litters are a godsend (albeit they can be a little pricey).
Also as tempting as it is to play with the kitty without toys, it's best to teach them now that toys are only for attacking/biting. Their little nibbles now might not be a big deal (and are super cute) but as they get bigger they still think it's okay and may end up actually hurting you/others.
Omg Emmie you finally got yourself a cat!! I literally have second hand happiness for you. Cat tip: get lots of snuggles now because when he’s old he will be a sour patch kid 😅
kitty tip #1: master the art of the hiss! hissing is the best way to tell kittylove to back off! some people think it's weird but it really is the only way to get them to stop doing something you don't want them to do (biting, scratching, etc). hissing is just speaking their language

Congrats Emma. Cats are the absolute best and I know it because I've had 4 so far and basically all my life (my first one lived to be 21). Calcifer is adorable! As for my cat tips: 1. Sometimes it will look like your cat is begging for food but half the time they're just curious/want to smell the food and when they have they'll often lose interest. 2. The best way to get a cat to stop doing something naughty is distracting him. Trying to stop him will only make him more determined to continue to do/attempt it. 3.You can often read a cat's mood off his tail and ears - happy is tail straight in the air for instance. Flat ears is usually fear or anxiety. 4. Others have said this already but to be a little more specific re plants: the monstera and lavender are examples of being highly toxic for cats. 5. When you play with him, do it with toys instead of your hands, otherwise he'll start believing your hands are the toys (and thus things to 'attack") and this may become a problem later on. 6. I'm also firmly in the 'never bathe, never clip nails' camp. Cats are highly self-sufficient and clean animals that mostly don't need our help. Just get a scratch plank or something similar. But I bet you you'll buy one soon enough because he'll happily choose some of your furniture if there's no alternative. 7. Be prepared to get annoyed with your cat's antics/odd habit(s) sometimes (hard to imagine in the kitten stage, I know) but know that it's never gonna compare to all the good stuff and there's absolutely nothing that beats a cat to come home to. 8. Take lots of pics and vids because future Emma will thank you. Enjoy!♥
Hey, Emma and little cute baby Calcifer! :3 Advise on being a new cat owner - watch JACKSON GALXY. :D He has a video on literally every single topic about cats and I've learnt so much from him even though I have been a cat owner my whole life. As I see from the video he seems quite confident and happy little kitty so that's good.
Some main things from the top of my mind that I took from Jackson Galaxy's videos:
- don't free feed him but have meals, with keeping a ritual it will be much easier to solve any other challenges.
- about food - if possible, feed wet food as it is so much healthier than kibble.
- Cat proof your house - think of a toddler that can also climb to the sealing - wires, plants, blocking unders so he can't get to places where you don't want him to be, etc.
- Keep a cat carrier out at all times so it becomes his den - when he feels scared he will go there as a safe place. This is so important when there is an emergency or you have to go to the vet.
There are a lot to learn but don't worry, I think you will be a great cat owner. Most importantly don't forget to enjoy his kittenhood. :D

Things I found out that may help. Good luck!
BIG: get them used to weekly brushing and biweekly trimming of their claws. Teach yourself with videos and vet advice. It is so beneficial for your cat's overall health and it will save your furniture in the future. Reward with praise and treats and start now. Even just starting with getting him used to you holding his paws and unsheathing the claws. It doesn't hurt them at all I promise.
I started when mine was little and now she is fully grown and could scratch me to hell if she wanted to but she sits patiently in my lap while I do her nails. (I legit hold her like a baby facing outwards, tail hanging down.)
Be vigilant with plants. I got lucky with mine and she couldn't care less about my houseplants but many cats chew on the leaves or dig in the soil. Which is dangerous since many houseplants are toxic. Especially lilies.
Dedicated play-time is huge. At least 30 minutes a day of active running is amazing for them. It will also help tire them out so they aren't waking you up at 2 and 4 am. Mine likes ribbons and lasers and chasing toy mice.
Worlds best cat litter is awesome.
I think that is it. Yay for you!
Oh! one more thing, automatic water and feeder is a life saver. Clean it out routinely and check it often. The food one can be controlled by an app to dispense by grams (or whatever unit you pick) and at times you have selected. Mine is 10pm and 6am. We did this to prevent our cat from waking us up at 5 am to beg for food. Now she knows it is the machine and she will just wait by it patiently. Piggy.
This also allows you to go away for a couple of days with the peace of mind that your cat is fine. He might be a little mad at you when you return but he is taken care of lol.

Calcifer is such a cutie - I hope you love being a cat mum! I had my cat for 19 years (he was also a ginger boy) and the cuteness honestly never gets old, I could still spend hours just staring at and cuddling him even when he was an old man.
We have four cats and they are all so different. They’re such a joy and I always look forward to seeing them when I come home. My husband and I are so smitten with them. 🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛

Cat Mom Tips: get lots of toys and a scratching post/cat tree! My cats love their tree and love scratching their scratching posts/mats when they are happy and excited. Some of my cats' favorite toys are Da Bird and glitter balls. They also love catnip bananas 😂
Also, watch out for string and yarn. If cats swallow them, they can cause impaction in the gut, which can be an expensive vet bill.

On cat care: I would strongly discourage biting/chewing at this stage if you don't want things damaged so that he doesn't keep that habit as he grows. Repeat for other habits etc you want to train him out of (climbing, going on kitchen counter/table, etc.). Get a spray bottle and fill it with water to spray at him when he is doing something you don't want him to do.
He must also have alternatives to chew and play with. He no longer has his litter mates or his Mum to play with. he's a living creature and learning about his new world. If he has no where else to climb he's going to climb on the counter tops, the curtains etc. You can't punish a cat for being a cat! Also, not all cats hate water, some actually like it!
More general cat tips than kitten specifically because I got mine when she was already almost a year old- get them on a scheduled routine that you know you can stick to. Feed them at the same time every day (cats typically like to eat multiple times a day but if you feed them every time they meow and seem hungry, they’ll never leave you alone). Try to schedule some play time before feeding because it fits with cats’ natural schedule (stalk, hunt, eat, bathe, sleep) and will help them not have weird bursts of energy after eating. Buy cheap scratching posts and place them near places the cat likes to sleep (they like to stretch and scratch after waking up) and near furniture you don’t want scratched. Place perches near a window so they can watch birds and bask in sun. Lastly, Pretty Litter is worth it if you live somewhere without a place to stick a litter box that’s nice and out of the way. You only scoop the poop so the litter lasts twice as a long, it barely has a smell, and it isn’t dusty.

OMG that kitty is sooooo cute! Tips: play a lot during the day so that he gets tired to sleep at night. Don't give him milk, dairy is actually bad for cats. Don't let him get TOO violent when he plays, he might never grow out of that. His meowing is so sweet!
Some cats like to eat/bite plants, so you should check if all your plants are cat-friendly.

Congrats new cat mom!! Tip(s): cats will scratch and get into things, it's their instinct no matter how much you try to discipline, so instead deflect and distract (ex. I had to buy scratching posts, both horizontal and vertical to put around my bookcases so my kittens would stop scratching my bookcases & books!!). Oh, and no height is too high, no matter how small they are, they'll eventually get on the highest thing in your house. My kittens have their 1 yr bday next month, and it's been a journey, but so worth it 😅

What an adorable kitty! I grew up with cats and have been fostering for about a year now.
My tip is to always have 2 cats! Unlike what most people think cats aren't actually loners. It won't just benefit your kitty but also you since there's a lot of behaviour cats can start showing when they grow up alone. It's called "single kitten syndrome" would highly suggest you research it and read up on it a little 🥰

Awww so cute! Congrats on Calcifer (love the name) My cat tip: cats love routines! Get them into a routine and I recommend following strict feeding times so your cat won't beg for food allll the time. They learn the times they get food then they'll just come to the kitchen/beg at that time and I find they're much happier that way :) also WATER, fresh water everyday they hate old water, and they won't drink water if it has any bits or dust or hair in it so yes fresh water :) (they like it in a bit of a different place to their food too). You're gonna have so much fun :D

I myself am a cat-momma and they're just amazing. One big tip I have for you if you haven't thought to already is check to see if your house plants are toxic to cats. I'm a plant momma too, and with my cats I have to check everything before bringing it in knowing their curious little selfs may get into them.

another cat tip-if you can, get him a friend! I have seen so many cats returned once the got older because they never learned to play properly as an only kitten! Plus-two kittens tire each other out. It is honestly less work than one. It will likely help with separation anxiety as well.
I would at least recommend researching “single kitten syndrome” to learn helpful tips to avoid him developing problematic behavior as he ages.

i think every cat is different but they all have routines and they like to stick to them otherwise they get stressed, before your cat creates its own try to adapt it to yours, for example eating and sleeping schedules are very important! i learned this the hard way 🥲

I have an orange cat too (Dorito), and I would highly recommend getting a lint roller if your cat sleeps with you. Your blankets and sheets will be caked with orange fur and washing/drying your bed linen isn’t always promising to remove all that hair. Lint rollers are a must. Cute cat!

Striped cats are the BEST cats, but all are good. We had a short-haired ginger like yours, named Mike. What a great cat; loved to be in your lap. I currently own a gray stripe tabby (Pip). He is well named and fills the house. He doesn't much like me reading or on the computer, because I'm not paying attention to him. My only advice: love him.

Cat tip! if your cat tries to get you to feed him earlier than usual one day DO NOT GIVE IN. He will keep waking you up earlier and earlier everyday without fail until you end up feeding him at 2am one day (speaking from experience...)

calcifer it's adorable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the count of monte cristo is such a fun book, nothing at all like war and peace, it's filled with action and it's very fast paced, i read it last year. Mary's monster looks cool!
Tip - get a covered litter box, use litter box liners (like specially shaped trash bags - they make changing the litter out so much easier), and a litter-catching mat under the litter box.
big tip: buy as many toys as you need. if they don't destroy their toys, they will just destroy your stuff lol
I also just got two orange tabby kittens, they are absolutely crazy but really loving and cuddly. try to get the kitten used to you touching their paws and extending their claws, it will make trimming time a lot easier in the future.

#1 kitty tip is to buy a good water fountain (one where water moves) to encourage him to drink as much water as possible ^^ cats can get liver diseases pretty easily if they are dehydrated~

Check around your apartment to see what dangling things you have. Like that potted plant hanging from the ceiling behind you. It wouldn’t surprise me if you walk in and see him swinging from it in the future. Be careful of anything little with beads (like that bookmark). He can snap them off in a quick second. Choking hazard. You are going to have so much fun!

Calcifer is so cute! My cats always really loved playing with toys, some of their toys were empty toilet roll tubes or empty plastic water bottles. It kept them preoccupied and running around! I think I also need to get Icefield. It sounds amazing!
Calcifers expressions were absolutely ridiculous, you'd pull out another book and he was all like "ooh what dat be i attacc =O.O= "

Nah, this is crazy I just got a copy of the count of monte Cristo. 😭 I got it after hearing most of the book during work and I was like nope I have to finish it with my own physical copy. I’m always reading what Emma reads.

Came for the books, laughed my tail off with the sponsor clip. Plus Monte is my FAVORITE book and I cannot wait to see what you think. Very intricate intelligent revenge plot and the movies don’t even touch the complexity. Some scenes seem to drag and I was like “how does this matter” but it all comes together.
Get him used to getting brushed. He’ll have no stomach issues! My mom did that with Acciuga using a treat and now she hops on the table after dinner every night to get brushed.
Cat Tips: make him used to have you looking into his eyes, ears and mouth. This will make vet visits way easier for you and less stressfull for him (and you).
Have his water bowl away from his food bowl, cats dont like to drink where they eat. (also dont stress if he wont drink at all, but maybe add a spoon or two of water to his meals)
Another good tip is the youtuber "Jackson Galaxy" who is a cat education person :) I watched almost all his videos before we got our cats back than!

YAY! I started The Count beginning of this year and about 500 pages in (reading other books along the way) and every time I pick it up, I do not want to put it down. Taking it all in slowly and knowing it will be one of my favorite books of all time. Extremely entertaining and fun. Hope you start your journey soon!

As someone who owns two cats definitely take lots of pictures because they grow so fast and you’ll miss the tiny days. Also, it’s good to introduce him to different flavours and both raw and hard food. My one cat got used to hard food so when we gave her raw food she got sick cause her body isn’t used to uncooked food while my other cat is used to raw food but not the hard food and got sick from it. Also, make sure to always monitor their skin because that’s how we realized my first cat was allergic to her food because it would give her weird bumps so we had to switch her food and she can be very picky with her food. Cats in heat is also not fun so definitely get him fixed once he’s at least 6 months unless u plan to breed, but trust me cats in heat are a pain 💀. Another big thing is fleas, my god are they painful to get rid of. My first cat was given to us with fleas which we didn’t know before and it took forever to get rid of them and it not only affected her but us as well because of the flea bites.

Cat tip2: Be careful with your plants! Some can be bad for cats, tho grass is really good for them ☺️
